  1. 1. If a major manufacturer offered a non-conforming driver that promised an extra 15-20 yards, would you put it in your bag?

I wouldn’t do it. Even though I don't play tourney gof what would be the point? There’s no one I am trying to impress and I would know it’s not a legitimate distance gain.

Well, the thing about the Callaway ERC II that I found in the thrift store, was that it was stamped right on the hosel, "Does not conform to USGA rules".

This was part of the agreement that the USGA and Callaway came to in their pissing contest over the club's performance.

I just bought one used and it arrived a few days ago... the ERC II with ramped up COR.  Got it for giggles. $23.00 including shipping.  I would never use it in a tournament and I would never count scores for handicap purposes.  And I've already texted all my foursome buddies to let them know I might use it for fun and that I'd tell them if I was playing with it.  Also offered to let them try it out during a round for giggles, too.

Well, I took it to the range, took it to the course.  It is about 10-15 yards shorter on carry (balls are plugging in the fairways this time of year) than my "daily driver", but man oh man is it accurate!  An unexpected surprise.  However, this may be from a 2 inch shorter shaft that is a regular flex compared to my usual stiff flex.  Now I just need to discover how to get that accuracy to go with my longer-hitting driver, without losing any distance.

It's an interesting and informative experiment.

Is it true that once a driver has been used it might not conform anymore to USGA Standards? I heard something about some Pros seeking out heads that had been used (demos).

Pablo, I have heard that as well.  That the more times you hit a ball off the face of your driver the springier and more trampoline-like it gets.  But there's a limit, eventually you will crack the face... I have done it on two drivers in the last couple years.

Never. I love to 'play the rules' (i.e. maximise the opportunity within the rules by knowing them well), but breaking the rules for me is a big no-no.

But even if you're open about it any play in a group that does the same, it's the first step towards playing a game that isn't golf anymore.

    • Thanks but honestly… I don't know any other way. I don't mind being wrong so long as I know where to go from there. I don't like being wrong — I'd love to get things right (which is different than "being right"). I recommend grabbing a furniture slider or a paper plate or something, and doing something like this: First, make a swing where you let your trail foot swing out as you turn, then twist that foot back in. From DL and FO, it'll look like this: Then, during a regular backswing, try to twist your foot in slightly (demonstrated in the left image): You'll notice a crease along the trail side of your hip, your pelvis will "fold" into that thigh (internal rotation of the hip joint), and your "bits" will be squished a little between your pelvis and your thigh. Ben Hogan said once: "At the top of the back swing the groin muscle on the inside of your rt [sic] leg near your right nut will tighten," Hogan wrote. "This subtle feeling of tightness there tells you that you have made the correct move back from the ball." I don't know about that, but you will probably feel something down around that area.
    • Yep. I think it will start to feel even more athletic when we start on the downswing stuff later.  I know, it's just I want to be younger so I have more time to enjoy the changes. 🙂
    • I need to drop a couple of stone. 🙂 😛    Yep. Yeah, but in the end, it feels more athletic, like you're actually using your legs, yeah? As you know… we use the best available info we have. Like others, I was fooled a little by 2D images for awhile (moving or still). Unlike others, I've learned and grown and moved on since then, while they're still looking at their images (often from lousy camera angles).
