Vijay, what would you do? *Poll*

I was looking at the leaderboard today and I noticed Vijay is leading early on...which led me to check out how he's done over the the last 18 months.

In 2014 Vijay played 25 PGA events, 1 top 10 finish, made the cut on 16 of them. Money total was about $1 million. Not bad.

However, since turning 50, Vijay has played 4 Champions Tour events, 3 top 10's (no wins...yet) no missed cuts. Money total is $284,000.

Now in my opinion, I think Vijay would win the Charles Schwab cup handily if he completely made the switch. He's already one of the greatest PGA players of all time with 34 wins including 3 majors. What do you think he's trying to prove? If I were him, I'd start racking up those Champions Tour wins & enjoying those 3 round tournaments.

For the record, the Champions Tour plays 3 round tournaments and doesn't have a cut, so that isn't really a stat.  (Not sure about majors, though, cuz they're 4 rounds, so they might have bigger fields and a cut)

Anyway, I can completely appreciate the guy who wants to continue to compete at the highest level while he's able to do so.

At the same time, I agree that he'd probably do very well on the Champions Tour.

The way you phrased the question (If I was him) has me answering that I'd play the regular tour until I could no longer make cuts and compete at all.

As a golf fan, though, I'd wish he'd switch to Champions because I'd rather watch him and Fred Couples than Lee Janzen and Michael Allen. ;)

I voted PGA Tour. If he still has what it takes to be out there, I say let him. He finished 101st on the money list.

Hopefully that he needs to work on improving his game so he does better instead of hoping for guys in front of him to drop out or retire. :-P

I voted for him to stay in the PGA. He's definitely playing better than quite a few of the youngsters. I also don't think he could beat a strong field of PGA players at this point in his career.  That said, if he were to still continue play with the old guys every so often, that's fine too.

Vijay has far more than 20 PGA Tour wins to his credit, which means he has lifetime membership. His status doesn't affect no. 126 on the money list at all.

As long as he is making cuts and contending occasionally why not stay on the PGA Tour?  He has plenty of time for the Champions Tour.

I thought top 125 was top 125, even among people who already had status for next year. Did it change at some point? Is it top 125 not otherwise eligible?

That's correct; what I meant was more along the lines of Vijay's place on the tour being guaranteed whether he finished top-125 on the money list (or FedEx Cup points) or not. Remember: the Olympics are next year, and the field is going to be determined by the highest-ranked player from each country. Senior events don't offer points for the world rankings, and it's not as if there are any Fijian pros threatening to overtake him. If Vijay keeps playing and gets some decent finishes, there's a very good chance that he'll qualify to play in Rio. He is competing well on the PGA Tour at Riviera this week and has a very good shot at a top 10 finish.  Keep playing on the PGA Tour until the time comes that you cannot be competitive.
