......I'm trying to think of a scenario where one would be getting married and NOT trying to "further" themselves.....

I can help you think of several thousand scenarios. Here is one: two people that entered a marriage that was doomed from the start (Jason and Amanda, along with many thousands of couples each year). The current statistic: 46% of all marriages end in divorce. Divorce means "NOT going NO further." Whether she had a shovel and was ready to dig, or he was a hopeless romantic that liked to wear diabetic socks to bed, their marriage essentially had a 50% probability of failure. Add in the incompatibility, and the probability of failure increases dramatically.

What we have here is a failure to communicate....

Thanks for statistics.... not sure why you felt the need..... does the ultimate divorce mean it (the union) was "doomed from the start"?... How does one decide incompatibility?.... Not sure what you're getting at or what it has to do with my original comment.... please explain.

Sure, let me explain, my good man. You said that you could not think of a scenario “where one would be getting married and NOT trying to "further" themselves.” A marriage that is doomed from the start is not based in either party furthering themselves. It’s going to fail regardless to whether one or both of the people further themselves or not. The same can be said generally speaking for 46% of all marriages. Is that furthering oneself? Not to me. I think “some people” blindly enter a marriage thinking this other person will magically fill some void and help the other, as you say, “further” him or herself. The fact is this – before you get married you are your own person and after a divorce or a spouse dies, you are still your own person. Furthering oneself, either professionally or personally in life, is 100% individual. You can’t expect another person to shore you up, or become a crutch. Reason: putting a spouse in a position like that limits their ability to further him or herself. The best marriages consist of two people that complement one another and two people that can exist without the other.

Just a pet peeve to point out: the whole 46% (or half) of marriages end in divorce cliche is BS. Yes, it's a true statistic but its heavily skewed by the degenerates who get married and divorced several times. Among many segments of the population (not including the Amanda Dufners of the world), the divorce rate is much much lower than the 46% thrown out here. Anyways, just had to point this out. Carry on.

Wait a minute. You can’t discount the statistical divorce rate of 46% that you yourself called "true" and not back up your claim without giving us the actual rate. How much lower? Show me where to find the data, please.

Just a pet peeve to point out:  people who label others who they don't know even in the least as "degenerates" based on one tiny aspect of their personal life are *******s.

Agreed.  I read somewhere that amongst people who've never gotten married or have gotten married and not divorced, the divorce rate is zero percent.

Seems as if the divorce rate for first marriages sky'd to 40% in the early '80's and has declined to where many think it is nearer 30%. I believe second and third marriages are over 50%, which to your point, increases the rate.

Degenerates? Hopefully, that's only a flippant response. How about unprepared? Or too many (hidden) issues? Gold Digging? Settling for Mr. or Mrs. Wrong? Who knows? Many researchers believe one can lower the divorce rate with adequate preparation and skills.

A recent national survey 79 found that the most common reason given for divorce was “lack of commitment” (73% said this was a major reason). Other significant reasons included too much arguing (56%), infidelity (55%), marrying too young (46%), unrealistic expectations (45%), lack of equality in the relationship (44%), lack of preparation for marriage (41%), and abuse (29%). (People often give more than one reason, so the percentages add up to more than 100%.)

If you get married and divorced more than three times, then yes. Good grief do people on this site harp on tongue in cheek words thrown out. Calm down folks.

It doesn't come across as tongue-in-cheek when it's in line with other judgmental things you've said in the past in this thread.

^^All I was alluding to here. There are 'repeat offenders' who skew the 46% statistic. Anyways, I'll leave this thread to the likes of Ferguson.

So scumbags who make broad covering statements regardless of someone's history is cool then too? So what if marriage means less to someone else? It is just a piece of paper for the gubment to keep track of you...

If you're going to try and call me a scumbag for some reason, can you at least perfect your subject/verb agreement first?

The first sign you lost an argument is when you start attacking the grammar. :-P

I do not agree with that. If you get divorced multiple times you might just have bad luck in relationships. There are a lot of very good people who end up in multiple marriages. I think you are making a poor generalization.

    • As a supporter of the European team even though I chose to live in the US, this is kind of good news. I'm pretty close to Bethpage, but won't be going at these prices. Neither will the crazy drunk NY sports fans who would have made this a very difficult place to play as a Euro. The tickets will go to the city types who are entertaining clients and don't care about the money. Many of them are going to sit there and watch, not get all raucous. I am not dumb enough to believe that this is going to be like a Sunday afternoon stroll in the park for the Euros, but I think it will be significantly more subdued as a result of the prices. Even at $250 I would probably have been watching on the TV anyway so no real skin in the game.
