yes, it is, but dislike of a person (whether it be tiger, or whomever) allows people to twist logic into pretzels in their minds...   see the post above yours...

generally speaking, when i see a "true golf fans..." post, it can generally be disregarded as an "i hate tiger, and this is a good passive aggressive way of saying it"...

and yes, i only tune in on the weekends when "the big names" are playing...  if that makes me a "non-true golf fan", feel free not to include me in the fraternity...

edit:  and i didn't even watch this weekend...  tiger or no tiger, it's migration season...  i DID listen on the radio...

You know, we get it.  You can't stand Tiger.  You've never said a decent word about him since you've been here.  That doesn't alter the fact that he is the one player whose name is known and recognize

If Tiger hadn't been in the hunt, I wouldn't have been watching.  Glad I did because in the end I was pulling for Davis, one of the guys from my era.

IMO, the problem with this "increased viewership" argument is that if interest wanes when he's not playing, and if this is still the case after he was the dominant player and attracting viewers for more than a decade, how can people contend that his playing NOW will build interest in the game? Game interest-wise, he's like a sugary energy drink - short-term rush with little long run value. People watch him, not the game.

Of course people can watch who and when they want, I am not arguing for the value of "true golf fans" versus Tiger fans, also I don't mean he shouldn't play more regularly to try to get back his own game (which I think he should) - just that him playing now should be understood as beneficial for HIM, not conflated with somehow growing interest in the game itself.

They want to see him get back to where he was from 1996 to 2013. He won 5 times in 2013. I don't call 1996 - 2013 a short term rush either. I watched Jack after 1986 for the same reason.

True golf fans want what's good for golf. They may or may not even watch golf if they'd rather be out playing golf, but they understand that increased viewership , whatever the reason, benefits the game they love.

That's a great way to put it. I couldn't agree more. The game needs its stars to be up there. Ratings are important for the game, whether you like it or not. We want to see our game marketed and covered well so more people watch it and are interested. No ones gonna be interested if Scott Brown is dueling it out with David Hearn down the stretch.

Same here. Given the choice between playing and watching, I'll choose playing most of the time .

+1 but I passed on playing Sunday to watch Tiger.

I just can't get behind the DVR...

To me sports are meant to be watched live, not recorded and hours afterwards.  The drama just isn't there for me and I can't sit through the event like I can when its live.

it depends on the sport for me... i don't dvr much golf, and i watch football/baseball/basketball "live"... however, i am also a racing (and cycling) nut, and i haven't watched any of that live in forever...

I can see that.

My dad tapes all the big games and watches them later.  I just can't stand doing it that way and would rather just check the score on my phone if I can't watch it live.

I would DVR a golf round and watch it casually, but never a final round at a major.  That would take all of the drama out of it.

i agree with you... you hit the right word, "drama"... to me, some sports (like racing) can be watched "plausibly live" and maintain the same dramatic impact, whereas others (like football and golf) lose something... even if i don't know the result, it isn't "the same" watching those recorded... i think it is because the gaps in play (that you would ff thru if dvr'd) are part of building the drama of the event, whereas in racing, the gaps in play (commercials, cautions, etc.), are simply downtime...

I think that is the biggest factor for me.

I am conditioned to have to wait for the drama to unfold.  Fast forwarding through the game makes it feel far less climatic and no tension builds.
