I ended up catching CNN's highlight of Donald Trump's media event declaring his candidacy for the US President.    Thoughts?

It reminded me of Radio News episode where Jimmy James declares his candidacy.  At least, JJ was likeable.  Can't stand Donald Trump's narcissistic rambling ....

The democrats should be happy, this about ensures a Republican won't win.

I can't see Trump winning the republican nomination so I see him having to run as an independent and have the same impact as Ross Perot did.

Well, I am not sure about him yet as to if he's a good, or bad choice for potus. I am not a fan of career politicians of any party. I equally do not approve of what the Donkey, and/or Elephant parties have been doing for the past 20 years. As career politicians, they are pretty much responsible for the shape America is in today. Trump is not a career politician.....................yet.

I spend a lot to time on political forums, and right now the consensus is he will disrupt the elephant party enough to hurt their chances against Hilary.  It will be interesting as to how long he stays in the race, and depending on what promises he makes to the less than wealthy classes, and the elderly, he could be right there till the end.

Does he really believe he has a chance?

If he does not believe it, what other reason (other than to satisfy his ego) does he have to run for the presidency?

If he believes it, he's crazy.

I think he knows the chance is really small, but the publicity is fantastic. It puts him in the spotlight for as long as he runs. Get ready for him to make up stories about his competitors and other tomfoolery in order to stay in the spotlight for as long as he can. Then watch him Thursday nights on NBC.....

Anyway, despite my dislike of the man, I think this will be very entertaining.    A true reality show.   Wait, maybe, that's why DT is doing this.   He has just become a center of another reality show.

I understand that he has not officially filed his candidacy and he has 90? days to do so. If he does, then there go his tv shows, so say the commentators.

So many think he wants to show up at a couple of debates, disrupt everyone, and then bow out before the deadline.

Trump is all about self promotion and he's used the Presidential elections in the past to promote his golf courses and The Apprentice so no reason he wouldn't try it again.  I can't imagine he wants to endure the financial scrutiny that comes with running for President, as there has to be a bunch of skeletons in his magnificent closets.

I saw one poll dated June of 2015 that had 59% of likely Republican voters nationally saying they would “never vote for” Trump. That should mean something.

I agree with this assessment. IMHO, when Ross Perot ran, he took 18% of the votes, which did nothing but take votes away from George H.W. Bush. Inevitably, Perot, and perhaps Bush's loyalty to Dan 'Potatoe' Quayle, cost the Republican Party the Presidency in 1992. If Perot would not have run, Bill Clinton would have faded into the woodwork and never would have been heard from again. I think the same would be true for Hillary.

At this point in time, it's kind of fun to speculate who may have been President in 1996 had Bush won in 1992. I have to admit that I don't think that George W. was ready and Bob Dole still would not have won. So, who in 1996 would have been the leading Democrat? Ted Kennedy, John Glenn, Bill Bradley, Joe Biden, Al Gore???

If Trump goes independent in 2016 the big winner is Mrs. Clinton, assuming she is the Democrat nominee. BTW, “Donald J. Trump” is listed on the foundation’s website as giving between $100,000 and $250,000 to the Clinton Foundation.  http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/242088-trump-gave-at-least-100k-to-clinton-foundation

If Newt Gingrich is what stupid people think a smart person sounds like, then Donald Trump is what poor people think a rich person acts like. I can't take him seriously, and it's shameful that the GOP's guidelines for inclusion into their primary debates would include him at the expense of legitimate candidates. And I say that expecting a sideshow from them even without Trump.

Story is that he paid NYC actors for showing up at his announcement -- $50 for 3 hrs of attendance and free t-shirts.

I heard that.   If it is true, it's pathetic.   Oh, wait.  Maybe, all the candidates do that.  Don't they?   I know in many places (different countries), people get paid to join/incite demonstration.  Political groups, parties pay them to make the situation (what they are demonstrating against) look worse than it is.   I even heard this (people getting paid to join) was the case with a recent US demonstrations against police shooting.   I don't know how valid the claim was.

I'd give him a chance. Probably wouldn't vote for him in the primary but if he made it through, I'd happily place my vote (unlike my abstention of McCain in '08). He'd get shit done, no question. And China and the Middle East would fear him. Would be good for the country

Gunther, you do know that DT filed for bankruptcy 4 times, right?    That's fine for an individual or a corporate but will be a disaster for US to go through.    BTW, even if he becomes a president, what he claims he will do are just talks - no realistic chance in hell to come true.  E.g,  building a wall between US & Mexico?  Does he know how long that border is?  Even the Great Wall of China was pretty ineffective preventing "barbarians" to invade China over and over again.   Also, Mexican gangs have learned to dig tunnels to smuggle drugs & people.   Is he going to build moats, too?

There are other stupid things he uttered that clearly showed me he was either an idiot or crazy or both.

For those who don't know who he is, here's an interesting candidate profile: http://www.theonion.com/graphic/candidate-profile-donald-trump-50675

I can't see Trump winning the republican nomination so I see him having to run as an independent and have the same impact as Ross Perot did.
I agree with this assessment.
I didn't follow the election in 1992 beyond knowing the big three names (I was in 4th grade at the time), so I'm asking this out of genuine ignorance. Do we actually know that the Perot voters would have voted for Bush if forced to choose between him and Clinton (or Bush, Clinton, and staying home)? I ask because most of the people I know who wasted their vote on Nader in 2000 have said that they would have chosen Bush over Gore if they were forced to pick between those two (and I think most of those would have stayed home if it were one of those two or staying home) I also seem to think Perot had a message of some sort in the election, which I can't see Trump having. Fun story: I was less than 18 months old for the 1984 Presidential Election, and I got almost as many electoral votes as Walter Mondale.

    • No rain while I was out (9am to 11:30am). Fairly pleasant for a late November day in the Mitten.
    • Day 56 - 2024-11-25 Did the BAD Challenge and hit a bunch more other little shots. This was one of the closer shots.
    • 70 today. The number looks good but, the course is a par 67 (5,110 yards, 64.3/115.). While the 70 took quite a few good shots to achieve, I am not counting that as shooting my age.
    • Played our town’s executive course this morning. Everything is closing but for now Huron Hills remains open. #13 is shaped like an upside down backwards L (dogleg left). Only 231 yard par 4. Dogleg has a tree guarding the corner and a sand bunker guards the green for those cutting the dogleg. Tiny green. About 10 years ago or more I would try to cut the dogleg. The hole is so short that even if one tangled with the tree or was bunkered, par was likely and birdie was still on the table. Now in my 70’s, I just hit it straight and try to wedge it close for birdie. Today I screwed up and pulled my drive. I wandered around a bit when my ball was not in the bunker. Finally located it on the approach to the green. Almost chipped in and tapped in the 2 inches for birdie. Best unintentional shot of the week. 😲
