Always happy to see someone get a job.  Feherty is a good guy, if he didn't try so hard to be funny all the time I think more people would like him.

Great news for NBC. Will be interesting if this effects Roger Maltbie any as he was NBC's top on course reporter.

Sure hope not, I really like him. My guess is Notah will be "repurposed", which will be a good thing, imo.

I like Feherty and understand his type of humor.  People may not know how good a player he was, but still not good enough to stick on the different tours.

He does have a tendency to get a little "blue" at times and some people will cringe why that comes out, but most find his knowledge of the game and the shots required to be interesting

Nice follow up article about why Feherty left CBS.

Answering a question about rumors of wanting more booth time and less golf course time:

It was a combination of things. Money was always an issue, of course. I have been doing this for about 19 years, it was time to make that change. But the other aspect was that I’m going to be doing basically the same thing at NBC/Golf Channel. I’m going to be working more four-day events there than I was at CBS. Because I’m working all four days, whereas I was only working five four-day events at CBS, I’m going to work less events overall but more of the four day ones [by extension, more time in the booth]. The first few days, I’ll be in the tower like I was at CBS, but look, I’m an outside pet. Someone has got to be out there stirring things up on the course.

Doubt any network would put 2 analysts in the booth together. Could add Hicks as the play-by-play voice and try a 3-man.

When Ken Venturi was retiring from CBS, they had both Ken Venturi and Lanny Wadkins in the 18th Tower with Jim Nantz, and up until Faldo went to CBS, both Faldo and Azinger were in the booth with Tirico at the Open Championship.

I'm loving the thought of Feherty at Troon next year (NBC bought out ESPN's final year), I think it'll be great banter between him and Johnny Miller holy crap.

They probably won't bring this back, but I missed the NBC US Open theme song. Off topic, but I miss the Wimbledon theme song too. Wait, what if they use the Wimbledon music for the British Open - it does sound regal and English. Imagine the Wimbledon piece used for golf. I think it works.

NBC's lineup blows CBS' away now with the addition of Feherty. Maltbie, Feherty and Rolfing on the course? That's as good as it gets. Still have Miller and Hicks, who I think are the best in the game. Glad NBC got a major this year, too. Meanwhile, CBS is limping outside of Nantz/Faldo. Gonna be hard to fill Feherty's shoes. Lundquist is retiring. Ian Baker-Finch bores me to death, and while I like Nobilo the person, he is snoozeville when it comes to announcing.

Thanks for that.  Great interview, but then when had Feherty not been a good one?

I love the NBC broadcast team but it's gonna be a little weird for them to have the Open.  They should trade with Fox for the US Open.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
