Why are there not lines on driving ranges?

I'm talking about lines that go down the range.

Be pretty hard to lie to yourself about how far off target you are if you are hitting down a line.

I think all of the ranges I have ever been to have something to target whether it be trees, flags, greens, bushes etc. I don't see a need for lines.

Because no one really hits from the same spot. I guess if you hit off mats then it would work out better. If you are on a grass range the position in which you hit can change even from shot to shot.

I would say putting more flags down range would be a good idea. I would just lay down an alignment stick to make sure you are aiming good.

You could also put an alignment stick, pointing away from you, about 10 yards down range and hit over it. This way you can see your start line as well.

I typically like to hit balls over a the 100 yard markers for my irons. I can get a good idea how I am aiming and how my ball starts.

I proposed this to my golf they dont care. also horizontal lines from 50 to 125 yards every 10 years.

chalk lines dont last many weeks but dont cost much.

I also proposed they get paid to take dirt form construction sites and make mounds at tarkets cause on flat land you dont see If you are 20 yards short or long.

the best I have seen so far are pyramides made of synthétique cloth with brand names. a big pot sound comes when you hit them. those thing have not moved an inch in 5 years and all day you hit towards advertissement.

I have never been on a driving range where there was not a target to hit at.  I use my fingers/hand to measure how close I come to a target, depending on how far a way it is. It's an individual thing since hands/fingers come is so many different sizes. I know that at 150 yards, if I land the ball in the general area of the target , maybe a hand width, I have hit my target.

Something similar to this;

https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion;=1&espv;=2&ie;=UTF-8#q=using%20fingers%20to%20measure%20distance

On some ranges you can use the targets to make up a corridor to hit the ball in. A good place to start is along the perimeter fence, and the nearest target from that  fence.

This sounds ultra geeky, but I google earth the distances from 4 different stall positions and map them out on my phone app for the one range. When it's grass I subtract a some distance.

The other range has markers that are measured to within a yard for each stall position, now that's pretty hard core. Plus, they use almost new range balls all the time.

All or most of the driving ranges I have seen have some kind of targets.

As far as I can tell for most golfers, shots are line and distance.

Since my meadow was just hayed, I might buy a bag of lime and try it.

If you are flying over the Champlain Valley, you might see a field with a thin white line.

Have you also considered purchasing some flags and placing them in strategic distances around the meadow?

I was confused by the subject line. I thought either queues or cocaine, the first made more sense obviously. But literally, lines.

Get a thickish string/rope. Tie a heavy nut to one end. throw it out until you're satisfied with it being the endpoint and pull the string taut. You have a line.

Is that an app specifically for ranges?

Handgun. DUH! :-D And since the need to be quiet on the range, a silencer.

Golflogix has some ranges mapped, and I punched in distances based off of Google Earth. Sorry, I thought they had a screenshot or something. . .

Can you come to my range and throw that nut 280 or so?

We practice off grass at our range, lines would have to change every time they move the tee area.  They have signs with yardage on them out in the field and a cement marker, like on tee boxes, that is the baseline to the signs.  They also have mown areas with red white and blue flags to represent greens at 100. 150 and 200 yards from the marker.  That give us a ton of aiming targets.

I agree with saevel25, using alignment sticks is a very good way to determine if you are hitting on-line or not.  One good way is to put two in the ground about 3 yards in front of you like a gate about 5 feet apart, one on target line and one to the right (if you're right handed) that way you can clearly see an inside to out swing.

I would just lay down an alignment stick to make sure you are aiming good.

You could also put an alignment stick, pointing away from you, about 10 yards down range and hit over it. This way you can see your start line as well.

Verminator, pretty quiet.

Actually, it sounds like the OP has a perfect setup for Archery and golf.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
