What'd You Shoot Today?

Played my second round of the year on Saturday, 1/28/23. Much worse than my first with a 48-43=91. We played the front 9 first this time at Wachesaw Plantation and only parred the first par 5 on outward side. I did something similar late last year at Musgrove Mills.

Felt like I was hitting all of my approach shots clunky. At one point, since we were at Sea Level, I was adding two clubs for my approaches. Only hit 4 GIR and three-putted one of those. Chipping was subpar and couldn’t help myself with any near GIR. After a disastrous par 3 17 that I tripled, parred the par 5 18th despite a tough headwind.  Really need to improve. Handicap is 8.2 and will likely rise - up from 5.5 just two years ago.

Shot an 80 yesterday, 5 GIR/9 n-GIR, no penalty strokes.

I was hitting the ball a touch fat on full swings for the entire round, I would guess maybe 80% of the shots. Distance was shorter than typical, and driver especially with ball flight higher/shorter than normal, which makes me think I am hanging back or something.

Weird strokes gained numbers. Based on how I felt like I hit the ball, I would have expected to lose more on full swing. I actually thought my short game was pretty good today (obviously not). I knew I putted well but didn't think it was that good.

Strokes Gained vs a 5 HCP or a 10 HCP? I'm guessing.

My bag is an ever-changing combination of clubs.

A mix I am forever tinkering with.

10 - forgot to say that. 10 is my benchmark until I can get start making some sustained progress with swing.

Played Hyland Golf Club in Southern Pines yesterday.  Shot an 86 with 11/14 fairways and 7 greens.  I had 37 putts with 2 three putts.  Felt pretty good tee to green, just have to start scoring better!

Didn't play but...

...4 weeks and 3 days after having my left hip replaced I hit a small bucket of balls with a PW on the driving range and did a bit of chipping.

For the first time in a while I was able to get my weight transferred properly and get through to a balanced finish. Hit the ball really well after the first couple were out of the way.

Very happy. I'll be getting some points on the birdie challenge thread soon.

I played Quail Rige GC today in Sanford.  I played from the white tees and shot a 79 with 10 GIR and 8/14 fairways with 34 putts.  I am happy with the way my game is trending!  Just have to continue to work on my short game.

Best round ever today .. but as it was a practice round off the TIPS not counted ... 35 front 38 back for a tidy +1.. 73 ....still shell shocked as I played one of my worst round at another course comp yesterday for a +17 !!!..not a fan of a slow round and cold winds it seemed>>

was reluctant to hit a GC again after such poor form ..but glad I did ... just wanted to have a care free practice round ... but as the went it become my best .. and lucky for me we have our National Golf Open Quaf here so got to play my back nine with a Foreign Pro that was out for a practice .. amazing distance for such a small guy ... might go watch him go in the MONDAY NZ OPEN qualifier

First 18 in 2023 for this 70 year-old guy.

43-43-86

Two disappointing three putts but generally happy with the way I hit the ball. Had one OB but only made a double bogey on a very difficult hole.

I used to play Woodfin Ridge on most weekends! One of my favorite layouts!

Played Musgrove Mills Oak tees - 72.3/155. The course was damp and the practice green was recently aerated, and I was not prepared for how fast the greens were during my round. Course is a 2nd shot venue with little room if you miss the fairway, and most greens are guarded by waste bunkers, water or slopes.

Due to family issues practice has been limited to indoor chipping, where I’m pretty awesome, but it did not translate to the course. On course goal was to hit to fat part of every green.

First 6 holes, tee to green was perfect hitting 5 fairways and all 6 greens. Yet, I three-putted from 7’ above the hole on 1; 24’ pin high on 2; and 27’ above the hole on 5.

The par 3 7th is their signature hole fronted by the Enoree River with a large triangle shaped green with the base at the back of the green and the point up front. Anything right is usually in the River, left is facing a tough pitch, and over puts you about 20’ below the green and possibly under a tree. I hit it it over, and took 3 more to go with 3 putts for a quadruple bogey. +7 after 7! Double bogeyed 8 after a poor tee shot and another 3-putt. Played the par 5 ninth well and just missed 9’ putt for birdie. 45 on the front with 7 GIR and 6 FIR! Struggled with ball striking on approaches the back and did not hit a green. 45-51=96 with 11 fairways, 7 GIR and 38 putts. Really need to work on my iron play!

Played a small private tournament today that Standard Chartered sponsored of about 15 people.  Won the handicap event and would have been runner-up in the open event though that prize wasn't given.  Only four prizes given.  Open winner, Handicap winner, Handicap runner-up and closest to pin.

Fairly decent round I guess though could have been better.

Bogey x 2, Par x 2, Bogey, Par, Bogey x 3, Par, Double Bogey x 2, Par x 3, Bogey x 3

The prize I won for this was a nice Clicgear umbrella, though unfortunately no trophies.  The open winner got a dozen golf balls and the other two winners got 6 golf balls each (think TaylorMade RBZ Soft).

9 holes on Sunday as first game back after hip replacement.

Pretty horrible start losing 2 balls in 3 holes (both with irons) and took 3 out of a bunker on 1st, but settled a bit eventually and finished par, par, bogie, bogie. Putted and drove pretty well (4 of 6 FW and and 15 putts) but struggled to get a good iron contact for about 4 holes, until I remembered what I was supposed to be doing.

Leg didn't fly off at any point either, happy days 🙂

Decent round.  Par x 3, bogey, par x 2, double, bogey x 2, double, par, bogey, par, double, par x 4.

Can't complain about a 10 over round though three doubles is irritating.  Two of which were lost balls into water.

84, meh. The key thing was I played Thursday, 24 hours before the winter storm that is dumping inches of wet snow & winter mix. The weather and course conditions yesterday were not nice but compared to how it will be next week, it was like Palm Springs. (okay, big exaggeration).

    • Day 15 - 2024-10-15 Mirror work. Watched one of my D1 players play today (67, plus -1 on the two holes he played to finish up a second-round 72). Well, you know what to work on… 😄
    • Day 166 (15 Oct 24) - Worked with the 6i into the net today.  Focused on the legs - slight knee bend, keeping pressure on lead foot, getting rotation thru contact.
    • No. The Steelers aren't paying either of them very much. They're not gonna get rid of a SB winning QB in case Justin is injured or something.
    • It could be to exhibit for trade bait.   Some teams may be looking for another QB (Miami) and if Wilson plays well, the compensation could be large.
    • Ball strike is king. You hit with a glancing blow (hook or slice), your smash factor just decreases a ton. Having a face to path angle of like 20 degrees versus something like 3 degrees is huge.  Yea, getting in shape is a good idea all around. Power is moving something heavy really fast. So, increasing how much you can lift, then improving on how fast you can move it will improve your power. In general, I think the two biggest tests for distance is like a chest press and standing vertical high jump. Some people are gifted with fast hands, but having good lower body can amplify what you have. Using the ground the correct way really ramps up the rotation speed, and then that can get the clubhead moving faster. Still, the hands do get down from the top of the backswing really fast.  If you start gaining strength and power gains. Knowing how to use the ground properly is important. You can have all the leg strength, but if you are not activating it correctly it is a waste. That is where good mechanics come into play.
