You read it accurately.  The group played a late morning round and notified the ranger they would like to play another 18. Doing so, several would have played before us with the rest after us.  My group and another twosome went both teed off about 40 minutes ahead of our tee times.

Well, that's kind of lame, but it sounds like the course gave you a choice to play in the middle of them or to go a bit earlier.

So, it sounds like you'd have still kept your tee time if you had wanted to. All seems fair.

Haven't played in three weeks, so I was encouraged that after birdie on 10 I was back to even on the day.  Then, somehow managed to go bogey, double, double, triple on the next four holes... Need to get back our again and get that out of my head.

Putted with my wedge for a good chunk of the holes (played 18 in 1:35) on a nice day at Whispering Woods. Shot 71 (-1).

This also included flying a few greens as I wasn't expecting to hit the ball as well as I did on a few occasions. This one almost found the right rough through the fairway for example (#17 at WW).

ww3w.jpg

On the previous hole I'd flown it into the second greenside bunker on 16. I went long on 15, over the back of the green on 14 by nearly ten yards (white flag)… yesterday I'd hit a 4I 225, too.

Did you walk or ride. Played it once with TST folks and it seemed to have some decent elevation changes and some holes with some distance from the green to the next tee. Either way 1:35 is impressive.

Why putt with your wedge?

1:35 is impressive, I believe the record on to PGAT is 1:29 by Wesley Bryan and he had a caddy and was running from home to hole.

Played 9 holes yesterday, shot a 38 for +2. 2 birdies, 3 pars, 4 bogies.

Played very solid, even the 4 bogies had good shots mixed in with a bad break/bounce.

Burned the edge on 2 10-15' birdie putts on the parred holes too.

Driver was flying forever yesterday, 3 drives of 320+ on the downwind holes took pressure off my approach game.

Because I didn't have to take the head cover off. And because…

I gained 1.06 strokes against a PGA Tour player putting with my wedge in that round as @billchao can attest.

I'm one of the best putters you'll ever know.

Last weekend I lost in the elite eight round of a 64 team two person best ball match play tournament. Went two 20 holes against two low single digit cappers. I won the first hole because I parred and got a stroke then didn't contribute the next 10 holes. Shot 50 on the front. Then I shot 38 on the back. Tied it up on 14 with a 4i up hill to a pin tucked maybe 6 feet past a brutal false front. Arccos has my 4i as my 214y club. Changed from 5i to 4i on the teebox into a cold quartering wind. Hit it pin high at 183y to 4 feet right!

Then I defended 15. Pulled my tee shot but got lucky and found it, chipped out and up a bit to middle of the fairway 140y out. 9i up the hill to 12-15 feet. Drained the par putt to halve the hole!

I gave it away on 17 though. All four of us hit solid drives. Then all other three players hit crap 2nd shots. I hit the green with 6i about 30 feet out but on the wrong level. Not great first putt to 4 feet. Standing over it felt like I was aimed right. Instead of stepping away I went for it and pulled it to 3 putt and tie the hole. Partner and I both got strokes on 18 and we both parred to win the hole and tie it up but that should've been for the win.

Super fun round though and super fun format!

Potentially the last round of 2023 today. Carded a 77 on a 6,000 yard layout, which was all my old body could handle. The course is relatively flat so walking was not a problem. Weather was wonderful for mid-November (50 degrees F. and clear blue sunny skies). I had the last "18 Hole" tee time and started as a single. I picked up Phil on #8 and John on #11. We ended up a foursome with the addition of Anthony on #16.

Most local courses have closed or today was their last day. From this point on I will need both acceptable weather (40 degrees or more, no snow) and an open course.

Played Musgrove Mill Golf course in Clinton, SC, today. First round in 7 weeks but I have been Stack speed training and working on putting. Putted great in warmup but had to revert back to the claw style on the first hole. Tough course, at 155 Slope, to return to golf without hitting a ball since early October.

Shot 55-41=96. Opened with an easy fairway, GIR and 2-putt par from 10’. Parred 7 and birdied 9. Really struggled with firm packed sand on several holes, and an unreliable fade on the others. Abandoned the fade on 9 and played the last 10 holes in +4. Unlucky 3-putt on 15 when left the flagstick in, as I normally do, and the 2’ par putt rattled back and forth off the stick and cup and bounced out. Also 3-putted 11 after a good approach took the slope and rolled all the way to the front of the green. 55 has to be my highest score ever on 9 holes. As is the 14-stroke swing from one nine to the next.

Played an off season round at Washtenaw Golf Club. 90+ was the damage. I would say that was my worst scoring round of 2023. I have played poorly a number of times over the past 12 months but nothing came close to this round.

Shot 91 yesterday with 9 GIR.

Had a two hole stretch on the back 9 where I was +7 - started with a shank trying to nuke a 4-iron on a long par-3. Could have just hit a normal 4-iron and ended up 10 yards short, or hit a hybrid and possibly end up over the green, both of those way better than where my ball ended up after the shank.

Putting, in particular lag putting, was terrible (-4 strokes gained). Didn't do very well in short game either (-2 strokes gained).

I'll take the 9 GIR as something positive though.

    • Day 554, May 9, 2024 Practiced a bit downtown at Golf Evolution. Would have loved to get more work in, but oh well.
    • I think if I could hit a 2nd shot when I did not like the result from the 1st I am sure I would get some lower scores.  I guess the idea is to mentally put yourself in a position where you need to make a really great shot, not just a good shot.  For example, hitting from the lie next to the creek his 1st chip was, in my view, pretty good but it was not "Great" in his opinion so he tried to do better on the mulligan, but he failed and was farther from the hole. I see myself doing this more on the range.  For example, after a period of practice I will mentally say I need to hit 4 good shots in a row.  I start with a Driver and if that is good then I do a 3 Hybrid followed by a pitch with a wedge and finally by a short chip.  If any shot is "Bad" I have to start over.
    • That’s how I interpreted it. You’re giving yourself two mulligans on every shot. Yea it’s just a variation of getting used to scoring low. I’m curious how valuable that practice is. I guess for some people they feel mounting pressure from playing a string of holes well? I’m kind of the complete opposite TBH. Once I start putting together good holes, I get a little swagger and if anything I get overconfident. I start thinking I can hit the green from anywhere, I can hit my driver to the smallest of targets, and everything inside of 10’ is going in. None of that is true, of course, and I inevitably will hit a miss that brings me back down to earth.
    • Wordle 1,055 4/6 ⬜⬜🟨⬜⬜ ⬜⬜⬜🟨🟨 ⬜🟨⬜⬜🟨 🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩
    • I saw this video yesterday, couldn't figure out what he meant, then saw this thread and thought "oh maybe someone knows what he was talking about" and you guys are in the same place as me.  I *think* what he's suggesting is that you play a game such that going low is expected. He said there are different variations of it. I think his variation is you get three goes at a shot. You hit your first shot and it's good enough, then you just take it. If it's not good enough then you can abandon that shot and play another. If you still don't like it, you can hit it a third time, but then you're stuck with it. He's good enough that three goes at a shot ought to give him one that's good enough to move on. He did mention his parameters for what counts as "good enough", although I do note that he should have hit a third go on that pitch from the hazard based on that. He holed the putt though so it worked out in the end. I think if you're not as good as he is (which let's face it is everyone here and virtually everyone on the planet), then you'd adjust those rules to make it such that you might manage to make 5 birdies in a row. So maybe you play a two ball scramble with yourself and if you don't like either one then you can abandon those and hit a third or you play a three ball scramble or whatever it is that you need to make your standard work.  At its base though, it's just like going out and playing from the front tees or playing a scramble with yourself. The goal is to gain comfort with making lots of birdies and going way under par, so that when you find yourself in that situation in a real game, you don't panic. It's an interesting variation and if I ever got to play "for fun" at my home course, then I'd definitely try it.
