Seriously though... what happened to him? It seems like his career is in freefall. And belly putters aren't even banned yet!

His last win was in 2012 and his earning have been falling each year since as well.

When you said "freefall," I had to take a look, as usually what I see is that players shoot up the OWGR quickly, and then their eventual decline is a very slow one. Keegan is much like that, early in the career, some big events propel him up, but then he hangs around by placing in lots of events, but other players are winning so they slowly displace him.

Keegan looks to have gotten to #10 in 2013, but then has slid to #59 or so. I can't say I'm a huge fan of Keegan, but it seems like he is definitely exiting the main stage.

Ever since he bulked up, he's been on the decline.    The skinny Keegan version was a far better golfer ...

I'm not sure Keegan has officially been diagnosed with OCD / ADD, but if he has, it seems to have gotten worse over the last few years, at least based on his pre-shot routine.  Golf is tough on it's own, add in these ritual club twirls, false starts and all the other things he does before a shot and he must be mentally exhausted after a round of golf.   I also think he's becoming more self conscious of it and the chatter about how he's a human rain delay to be partnered.

I've noticed in a few rounds he's tried to abbreviate the pre-shot routine, which if he is really OCD could cause him more mental anxiety due to not finishing his full routine.  I'd also guess the anxiety of switching to a traditional putting stroke is also not helping, though I haven't checked to see how it's impacted his putting statistics.

Never cared much for Keegan. Total flop in the Ryder Cups. Many disagree. but when you pull the actual stats they're far from impressive.

One of my top 3 least favorite players on tour. His pre-shot routine is so painful and his twirling of the club face behind the ball is questionable at best. My guess is he will continue to fade into one-hit (major) wonder obscurity within a few years.

Okay maybe not freefall but definitely on the decline. He definitely fell from the limelight really quickly though. Considering he was a major winner in 2011 and RoY

Gotta be the J's....  It's the shoes!  I'm sure that would mess up a few pre shot routines and kill your swing thought when you looked down.  That just might make you pick your head up a little early...:-)

Actually in terms of OWGR, that's almost a freefall! I'll look at the graphs of various players from time to time, and it's always characterized by meteoric rises from decent showings early in a career.  If a guy gets injured, it will taper off slowly followed by a steeper and steeper dip. If a guy simply plays mediocre or poorly, it dips like Keegan's. Rarely do I ever see something that looks like a steep dropoff... but then again, if they dropped off I wouldn't see them, huh?!

I think once they get down near the top 100, it's easy to drop out of sight quickly. Week to week, if you miss a cut, you can drop 5-10 spots when you get that low. But if you keep near the top 50 or so, there are fewer guys who can leapfrog you when you have a bad week, so it tends to be a little more stable.

Keegan is hanging around because he doesn't miss too crazy many cuts. He's not lighting it up either, but he's doing just enough to keep a trickle of points coming in to keep him afloat. If he starts missing a lot of cuts, he could sink out of the top 100 somewhat easily.

Agree.  We tend to look at the current very, very best and compare all others to them.  In reality, a lot of very good players experience some dramatic peaks and valleys.  I suspect we haven't seen the last quality play from him.

Somebody much smarter than me should do some kind of regression analysis on the length/fidgetiness-ness of a pre-shoot routine and career longevity (as a top player). I feel like Johnny Miller mentioned it during the playoffs with regards to Spieth or Day, but it would seem like longer pre-shots routine would become problematic as a career progresses as they can become filled with toxic thoughts and/or self-consciousness over their fidgetiness (i.e. the tendency for people with a stutter to stutter worse when attention is drawn to it). I hope this doesn't end up hurting Spieth and Day's game down the line but I worry it will if they don't change some things now.

It's not uncommon for this to happen to players, he'll probably start playing well again some year, maybe even win something, but I think the engaged thing is as good as an any diagnosis can be, it's probably all mental, he won, he made money, and then the women.... golf? what golf?

I don't see him falling too much further. He's still a good ballstriker and got in the hunt in several tournaments. It's not like a Duval or Weir freefall where they hit it all over the lot and can't break 75.

According to this video (it's around the 4:30 mark if you want to skip right to it) from 2013 to 2015 he dropped from 47th to 126th in strokes gained putting.  I'm sure that hasn't helped any!

    • Day 24: did a stack session. Worked a bit on downswing feels during breaks.
    • Day 444 - 2025-12-18 Light day of hotel room work. GEARS Summit v2.0 today. Good day.
    • Day 38 (18 Dec 25) - got out in the backyard with grandson this afternoon.  We got into a little game of pitching the ball from about 25yds to a target point just off the asphalt lane behind the backyard.  Goal - just clear it with a quick hop and stop.  Focused on using the wedge swing motion I was talking with the course pro yesterday….smooth and thru just bruising the grass.  In addition to a concentrated focus on technique, it also called for a quiet mind locked in on target point.  Rehearsed this with both the 50° and 55° wedges.
    • I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.
    • I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.
