Much closer than San Diego ;-) I've traveled to Erie several times to work on my game, well worth it.

Oh, I'm sure it's worth it - it's just a matter of finding the discretionary funds.  Haha.

I'd go for in person instruction any day. I find its better to get a feel for the changes you are looking to implement, you can ask questions after a few shots and get instant feedback.

Online is still better than nothing but you have to make sure you are picking up the correct bits to help your game. I'm going through a transition right now of using a bit more online than I used too. Mainly because of a bad experience with my current instructor and considering trying someone else but have had great results so far with my current instructor.

It all boils down to how you feel really. We all learn differently.

I think most instructors schedule 50 minute lessons around here with at 10 minute break in between. If it's a long drive to Erie, why don't you see if he'll schedule a multiple session of maybe two lessons? Granted you'll probably be working on the same thing for the second one, but that's one more hour of getting it right before you're turned loose.

If money was not a consideration, I like in person lessons with video the best.

But, I think the best value is Evolvr online lessons.

And in between lessons I think it's great to video your swing and analyze on your own.

It's all an education that helps you understand your swing better.

I've done both and will do both in the future.

If money were no object, I'd give it a year of learning under Evolvr online. But I'd want the first lesson to be in-person with the instructor, and a few more throughout the year. Unless the instructor thought that was unnecessary.

If offered, I'd also pay to have an on-the-course lesson at the beginning and end of the year.

I started seven years ago in my early 30's. I was a good athlete my whole life, but had no idea how to even hold a golf club near proper.

I've thoroughly enjoyed reading, watching, trying. It has been much like a treasure hunt. Always have enjoyed self-learning different things.

Granted, I'm sure I could have become a better golfer quicker by paying for lessons, etc. But there has been a true joy from attempting to "dig it out of the dirt."

That being said, I agree with 5SK and the help iacas provides to so many. Quite honestly, it would be a great opportunity to gain insight from him regarding your golf swing!

As RFKFREAK said, please give us a Trip Report about your experience. Great use of time before spring!

Best of Luck!

    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
