Golf Magazine article on Kevin Na

i thought it was very interesting, especially how his mind works against him sometimes.   The story with Steve Williams is atrocious.   I've not liked him for years, but who does he think he is speaking to anyone like that?  No matter who they are.

Really good article. I've always been a Na fan; I don't have the issues that he has (or had) with taking the club back, but I do understand the difficulties of getting out of your own way.

Steve Williams is a dickhead.

I always liked to watch him if he was in a tournament I was walking around at.

I know he was a win or lose pick in fantasy leagues. A for Williams, what jbishop15 said is probably accurate.

I always knew him as the "slow guy" but this helps put things into perspective why he has that label.  I can sympathize.  I let my brain get in the way sometimes, although certainly not for these stakes.

Williams bit the hand that fed him and had a monster ego by the end.   I'm very disappointed.  He had a ring side seat to history and acts like a jerk.

Steve Williams is the guy who complained about being asked to pick up clubs when Tiger Woods set/dropped them by the bag while Steve attended to something like raking a bunker or fixing a divot. The comments made by him don't surprise me in the least and I don't for a second doubt that they happened.

Kevin Na is interesting, and I've read into him a bit after his Players collapse. My guess is he just has a hard time since he always pushed himself for perfection, so if something doesn't feel perfect it's hard for him to swing (since he wants and expects perfection). The knowledge that something could go wrong makes him want to fix what could go wrong, but he can't (because it's golf), so he has to wait until he's comfortable enough to swing. I used to have that on short putts of around 4-6 feet, until I practiced them enough that I stopped getting so nervous.

Fascinating article.  Gotta feel bad for Kevin.  He puts so much pressure on himself, but that just makes him play worse.

I definitely cheer for Na. He is a very good player. He's overcome a lot too. Not a fan of Steve Williams and I'm guessing many current pros aren't either.

I thought it was funny TW asking if Na's buddy was still getting laid alot, and signing the hat to help that out. How does that square with the sex addiction therapy he took? I can't imagine somebody in AA promoting getting drunk. Also, what would Buddha say?

You do not like TW-We know.

Not the same thing.-My buddy is in AA and goes out with us. He does not drink but some other friends do-Quite a bit.

Soooo predictable. If you like TW you gloss over his BS, if not you're a hater? Let's address TW talking smack about sex post 'therapy'. If you were really a fan you would be concerned.

I did nothing but allude to the sob story, errr I mean addiction, he was spouting after he got whacked by a 9 iron trying to save his marriage. What is it, BS or should we be concerned about him falling of the wagon? And, I don't recall alot of talk about random sex in buddhist literature.

Yeah, I bet your buddy encourages people to drink.  Does your AA buddy just drive you around and pay for the shots, too? What a deal.

It is as predictable as you bitching about Tiger Woods on a topic that is not even about him.

Asking if someone is getting some action is not driving around buying people drinks.

Grow up buddy. You only ever post here to say stupid shit about Tiger Woods. You are the one with a man crush or something.-I am not concerned.

I still don't really like Kevin. I know that probably speaks more to my character but, I just don't like him.

I feel the same way about Na.  I just don't enjoy watching him play at all.  I want to see players battle at the end of a tournament, not choke.  In my opinion Na is another example of a player that went professional at too young of an age.  It happens in just about every sport--they spend their life dominating the competition and decide to test their game against players that are just as good, or a lot better than they are.  Once there, they cannot handle the pressure of having to be on top of their game all the time just to keep up.

That all being said, I do hope that he is able to get his mental game under control.  I may never root for him but he is clearly a very good player and could make some tournaments a whole lot more interesting in the future.

Also, Steve Williams is a prick.

I wish the journalists would have followed up on the confrontation between Na and Williams with Adam Scott.

After all Williams is Scott's employee/contractor and shouldn't Scott be responsible for his interactions with other players.

If what Na described in the article is even close to the truth (which William's seem to confirm in the his article) where the hell was Scott?

Is Williams the boss of Scott now?

Maybe, but remember that from his comments, Williams is really the one who wins tournaments.   So why is Adam Scott even there?

    • For someone with a very consistent swing speed and ball strike, upgrades may improve performance. For everyday golfers, probably not. I'm a rather odd player. I usually get best performance from basic pro or tour heads, but with lighter stock shaft from the model's standard driver set up. (Yes, current EXS is an exception.) When I get a full driver fitting, I usually try a couple of modest upgrade  (not super magic) shafts. Most of the time upgrade gives a couple of extra yards, or 10 yards less. Remember this about stock shafts: They are matched to a particular driver model to fit the type of player likely to adopt that model. Also, most OEMs offer a variety of stock shafts in their drivers. Test for which one works best. And, the final decider...
    • Uh, seeing you're having trouble with hit-and-miss performance from inherited clubs... Get Fitted! IF the 910H pair don't work, swap them out. Also, only two degrees separation in loft is not much. You might consider a 4W (much more reliable than a 3W) plus hybrid. This would give more distance separation than two Hs. For hybrid, get one you can hit... Maybe a more benevolent 4H. Quite often I try to brand match my bridge clubs (FWs and Hs), and my irons and wedges... but not always. Whatever works!
    • Like others have said, get fitted. Since 2011, I have played some combination of 4W + 7W. I had a Cobra 3H and 4H a couple of years back, and would swap out the 7W for a 3H in cold months (keep out of cold wind, and rough thinner for wayward drives.) The 7W matched up with yardage often with 3H; the current 4H goes almost as long as 7W, but has a lower trajectory. 4H also bumped out 4i in last bag redo; I learned to hit stinger with 4H so that's my driving iron on tight holes with shallow landing area. Again, a side-by-side test will tell you which way to go. If 5W or 3H is meh, keep the 7W. Also, are you looking to replace the 7W with a 5W or 3H, or add a second bridge club (5W or 3H) to your bag?
    • Makes sense and aligns with other literature. Static stretching, especially for longer durations, can impede performance in strength and power activities. I would not want to do like hamstring, quad, and calf stretches then go immediately sprint. To me that sounds like a terrible Idea. I would rather start off walking, then jogging, then running, then ramp up to sprinting.  To me, static stretching isn't even a warmup activity. I like the term warmup; you want to get some exertion going before the activity.      a { text-decoration: none; color: #464feb; } tr th, tr td { border: 1px solid #e6e6e6; } tr th { background-color: #f5f5f5; }
    • Going to Florida for the usual February golf trip, and with our current weather, that date won't get here soon enough. Heading to Augusta GA for the Tuesday Master's practice round, will definitely get some golf in while I'm in the area for a few days. Hope to be able to catch up with @coachjimsc if he's around. Then it's back to Scotland first of July.  Playing 7 new courses, can't wait for that.  Then somewhere after that is the Rhode Island CC Member-Guest and then my normal October golf trip to Myrtle Beach.
