How to get the new $35,000 Tesla Model 3 CNBC

I'm pretty impressed by an entry price in that range. The concept car picture looks very nice too. The only drawback I see is the 200-240 mile per charge limitation. Basically eliminates being able to use this car for long trips for me.

This is very appealing for me.  The car it would replace is only a commuter car anyway so the range is plenty adequate. Now if I can only make the current car last until the Tesla is available ...

The idea of people switching over to these cars in the city is extremely appealing for sure. All that reduction in exhaust fumes in town during rush hours? Yes please.

With gas at it's current prices, $35,000 is still high for an entry level car.  As a stock trader, I hope TSLA does well.

It will be interesting to see the upgrades available. The model S can get up to 288 miles with an upgrade. 240 miles would work for me.

By them they say it takes 75 minutes to charge the 90 kWh on the model S.

The downfall in the US is still the state laws prohibiting the sales of cars outside a dealership. Meaning Tesla can not sell directly to the consumer with out setting up a dealership franchise network. That is why they created Apple type stores. You can go in and check what you want out, and they tell you how to order it online.

The federal credit for an EV is $7,500, and many states offer them as well that can bring the cost down into the low $20,000s. At that price, it's all of a sudden extremely interesting to me, depending on what the interior looks like, if they had to sacrifice any performance to get that range, etc.

The problem at least for big cities is that those are the people least likely to have access to an outlet when their car is parked.

I don't think Taxi's make enough money to overhaul their fleet with them. Though I could see some Uber driver maybe making use of this to really cut down on their gas costs.

It's a bit pricey, but at the same time it's pretty much in line with what I see most people pay for a nice vehicle. I would expect, even at it's entry level, it's going to have more amenities than the average entry level car.

True enough, but is that assuming they won't just be charging them at home? With a 200+ mile range it would be awfully strange to run out of charge if you just use it to commute or driving around town. I can see how it would be quite the pain if you forgot to charge up and get stuck in town somewhere though.

 

 

Also, one thing I thought was pretty great was they only required $1000 down to reserve one? That's ridiculously reasonable.

If you park on the street like I do (or in a public garage, or even in a parking lot outside an apartment building), you might not have access to an outlet at home.

Jamo already addressed the cost issue, but you bring up a good point regarding what it might look like.  Is it going to entry level quality like a BMW 3 or Mercedes C?  Or entry level quality like a Nissan Sentra or Honda Civic?  How big or small are we talking?  Having the unveiling and the pre orders on the same day means that some people are making really quick decisions about something of which they have little knowledge.  I'll probably wait and see. :)

Both our cars are getting long in the tooth, so I'm very interested in checking the Tesla 3 out when they become available.  My brother has a Nissan Leaf, but he hasn't been very happy with it.  He's definitely had some coasting on electric-fumes situations.

I'm going to be interested in seeing what it looks like and what features it has. I like the look of the other Tesla cars so if it follows that same body style that's definitely a plus. I don't really require much in the way of amenities personally, as long as there's cruise control and bluetooth I'm pretty happy but there's still the issue of the limited range. Given information Jamo provided, basically the cost of it is right around the same price as the car I just got, so it may be something I could be interested in suggesting to friends and family who just need something for short commutes.

If it competes with the 3 Series BMW and Mercedes C it's a good price point.  Most of the time new cars and prices are announced at base price.  I don't know how Tesla packages their cars but usually base price doesn't even include car mats so it will be interesting to see what a reasonably configured Model 3 will cost.

Electric car range is not as simple as saying you will get 240 miles. Many factors including how cold it is, whether or not you use the heater/ac, the type of driving you do (going 75 on the freeway is not even close to the same as going 30 on a side street). Every mile is not created equally. 

I was told when I bought the Leaf that I would get 100. Not really. Mostly I would get 80ish and if I used the heater and drove 70mph I would go down to somewhere in the 60s. 

The real issue with electric cars will be what happens as the battery degrades. Tesla does some inventive technology to cool the batteries but it is still a question. Specifically if you live in a hot place like Phoenix. If you plan to lease then you are fine, but if you plan to own the car for 6-7 years it could become a big issue for you.

$35,000 is currently the top of my vaguely planned "next car" range, which I can definitely see paying for one of these.  I believe I will own a home by the time my current car gets replaced, so upgrading the garage to have a plug will be possible, and it's very rare that I drive over 240 miles -- the only thing I can think of is if I drive from L.A. to Phoenix, that's just under 400.  Most of where I go is within 120 miles of where I live, and I suspect I'll have friends with electric cars by the time I get one, too.

Fortunately, my current car isn't even at 100,000 miles yet (will be there est. end of this month -- 99700 or so at the moment), so I have a good half decade or so left with her at least.  I did go to a car show a few months ago to see what is out there, and saw a few non-electric ones I could see getting if something comparable exists in 2021 or whenever.  Only one company (the one who I call "Neptune" because I can never remember their name, but they have a trident logo) at the show scoffed at me when I asked them what they had in my price range.

Anyway, Tesla at that price point.  Neat.
