Winning on the PGA Tour - Art or Science?

Hey, we've heard this answer before, no?

It's a long shot, plus I'm not sure he'd be a captains pick because right now all the coverage of his clubs, swing and "mad scientist" approach to golf could been seen as a distraction for the team.

If he qualifies on points then he deserves to go but if not, I'd leave him home this year.

I'd agree. Starting with President's Cup like Spieth is a little less pressure for a relative rookie.

You don't win two major amateur events as a never-was. And he has decades before he's a has-been.

I think there was a healthy dose of sarcasm in @k-troop's comment.

Bryson DeChambeau is probably reaching media saturation and here's yet another piece on him:

There's not much Bryson talk this week given he's not going to make the cut.  I'm curious to see how he handles not being at the center of attention.

He needs it.  Quit yapping about "the theories" or whatever to the media and play your game.  I think this will be a good wake up call for him.

It's a stupid golf course, though. True - everybody was playing the same course . .but a lot of pros skip this tournament - partly due to timing/partly due to the course.

If I were Bryson's caddie . . I'd say shake it off . .this week is a mulligan.

Why is it a stupid golf course?

I'm not sure where you're getting that it's the tougheset non-major course - I've never heard that.  If you google "worst pga courses" . .everybody who makes such a list puts this course on it.  The players have criticized it - both verbally and by not coming.

Here's what golf.com says about it:

http://www.golf.com/photos/5-best-and-5-worst-pga-tour-courses#7

" Just the sheer number of corporate references in the name of the course should send this layout packing. However, it cements its status in the bottom five with rock-and oak-strewn rough framing the slender fairways, rendering it nearly unplayable in the wind, as well as for its small, heavily contoured greens and deep, awkwardly sited bunkers. "

Golf digest rates it 3rd worst in a "Player's Pick The Worst Courses" featuer and gives this comment from an anonymous pro:

"complete disaster," that "had a chance to be phenomenal with the property" but "pride and ego got in the Shark's way." ... "Shorten it for starters," said one while noting the "crazy" undulating putting surfaces. "The greens need to be blown up." ... "We couldn't get around in twosomes ... it's just too much golf."

As a local I've payed attention to the tournament . .mostly because I wish it was better.  One thing I think would make it better is changing venues.

It's too long, it's too narrow, the woods lining the fairways are too dense to play recovery shots out of, and the greens are not receptive to approach shots. Sounds too tough to me.

As far as changing venues, there's a tournament-ready Pete Dye course on the other side of the property, which was generally well-received when it hosted a stop on the Champions Tour for several years.

Exactly it's tough. You have to feel a little bit sorry for PGA  Tour players right? Rainmaker, today on the broadcast. They said that the highest scoring  average in the last 3 years. among non major tournaments was the Texas Open. If that makes it a stupid course, then I guess I like stupid tournaments.

I didn't see that stat but I guess it makes sense if you look only at scoring.  I like tough courses and tough tournaments but I find this one gimmicky.  And unfair if there are sporadic winds during the week.  It's way, way harder in the wind.

Most importantly - the players don't come.  That's a huge problem.

Yeah, I would have liked to have seen a better field myself. On the other hand, what do the best players in the world have to fear?

    • Can't brag about a 50 last night but it was the best round of my season (4 rounds of 9 holes) so I am not as upset as I could be.  One thing I am noticed is that I got a little more confident in my long hybrids and I attempted a couple longer shots that typically I would just lay up and those holes were a big part of the lower score.  Not every shot was great but good enough that they helped.  I even shot par on a Par 5 after taking a drop.  On that hole I would usually lay-up to @ 100 yards and often miss the green altogether with my 3rd shot (or worse chunk my approach and put it in the waste area).  Yesterday I went for it from @ 200 yards out with wind in my face and landed in the waste area short of the green.  My drop left @ 40 yards in and I stuck it to 3 feet for my par putt.  If I had laid up I would have avoided the penalty stroke but likely would not have been on the green in regulation and may still have been working for par.  By going for it I gave myself a chance at birdie and still saved par. I do not plan on being crazy aggressive but I think I tend to be too conservative at times so I will "go for it" a little more often going forward.
    • Day 14 (15 May 24) - Worked with the SW in the backyard, short pitches from 10yds up to 30yds.   Focused on ball placement in stance - ball back, ball forward, ball center.  Afterwards moved to inside the shop to work on putting pace on the rug - putting one way gives about an 8' putt, going the other a 6' before bumping onto the adjacent rug.  Focused there on the line - picking a target point about 18"-24" out and making sure the ball rolls through that point.
    • When someone is trying to validate their choice, statements concluding with "right" are often the MO.  Too bad he thinks he has to keep defending his decision, just do like guys like DJ and HVIII - take the money, play the tourneys and keep quiet.
    • I liked Rory talking about keeping it shallow. I think a lot of people imagine steep as really steep. Trackman has a PW attack angle at 5 degrees. Pitch shots you probably want less than 5-degrees.  Here is 5 degrees, the dashed line. It isn't much at all.  People probably need to feel like the club is stupidly shallow if they hit it really steep.  Some good tidbits of information though.
    • Hey, many thanks in identifying those.
