As fitness tracking industry grows, Jordan Spieth helps bring smart shoes to golf

Quote

The shoes were built from the same foundation as the UA Drive One golf shoe, which were launched in April, and housed the same sensor technology found in the brand’s first smart shoe – the Speedform Gemini 2 Record Equipped, according to a company press release.

A sensor is embedded in the midsole of the shoe and tracked Spieth’s activities through the week. On Sunday for example, Spieth took 13,541 steps over seven hours and 15 minutes and burned 1,984 calories, the company said.

The number of steps makes sense to me. The number of calories burned, not as much.

Why not?  As a rough number don't you think they can calculate how many calories he burned? Or at least roughly how many?

Yeah but can he post to TST or play Pokemon Go with those shoes?  Because if not, then they're worthless! :-P

Just for fun, plugged in his height and weight into an online formula to get his basal metabolic rate = 1990/day, so about 622 for 7.25 hours. Walking 13,500 steps is about 675. Worst case (or best) would combine these two to be about 13,000. So I guess the other 684ish calories would be his swings (mostly practice)?

I've found my HR is a little higher than usual playing golf. I typically ride and even doing that vs walking my HR is about the same as when I take a brisk walk around the block, in the 106-110 BPM range. Golf isn't strenuous but it I suspect things like walking up and over hills and mounds kicks it up a bit. I also am more focused when I golf and despite riding there is a lot of bending etc. When I mow the lawn I range around 95-105 BPM so there is something about golf that winds us up.

Its not so unbelievable as you might think. Ive read more than a couple articles that mention if you walk and carry your bag during a typical round of golf, you burn 1000-1200 calories easy.

You run a half marathon you burn 1300 calories. Spieth walks seven miles playing golf and burns nearly 2K calories? They're trying to sell you smart shoes. Don't believe the propaganda. The whole calories burned measurement also depends on so many factors. That a computer takes enough of them into consideration is not believable. It's throwing out a best guess and being very generous.

Well if it's not based just on heat, you could factor in the body working to stay energized in heat, or working to stay energized after loss from sweat, on top of the fact that hes swinging a club 100+ mph, but other than that i agree, that many steps doesn't really equate to that many calories.

The companies whose goal it is to get you to buy stuff. They're manipulating their numbers. Food companies by withholding, paying for academic studies, all sorts of silver tongued stuff. The exercise and weight loss industry - exercise more so you can eat more. Yo-yo diet on our revolutionary plan.

More and more studies are saying exercise doesn't really contribute to weight loss as much. Not something the exercise companies want to hear. Still, get out there and walk - it's good for you in so many ways, it's not funny.

Half marathon a 160 lb, 30 year old male should be burning about 1600 calories.

Let's say that same person walks a golf course. Even if they walk a total of 9000 yards, at a pace of 3 mph, they would  take 100 minutes to walk that distance. Just to show you how slow PGA Tour players are ;)

If you hike that 100 minutes you burn 740 calories. If you walk that 100 minutes on flat ground you burn 540 calories. Then throw in the 200-250 calories the golfer would burn just standing around. That 160 lb male should burn around 1000 to 1200 calories. This doesn't include carrying a golf bag, but Jordan Spieth doesn't either.

The primary issue is that it takes a golfer twice as long to play golf as it does for an average half marathon runner to finish his race.

Golf = 4.58 calories per minute
Marathon = 13.33 calories per minute

1200 calories burned, UA "smart" shoe is still overestimating by 800 calories. People who think UA number is accurate will think, hey, I deserve that milkshake.

No, people do that anyways when they burn 300 calories at the gym. :-P

Calories burned is a function of how hard your body worked, factors such as height, weight, overall conditioning and heart rate factor into it.  Someone who is out of shape will burn more calories than someone in shape performing the same activity.

Unless Spieth has horrible cardio there's no way he burned that many calories walking the course.

I'm pretty sure Fitbit is facing a class action lawsuit because their HRM isn't accurate.  I know with the Fitbit watches and others you can get different heart rate results by adjusting the band tighter or looser.

    • Day 208 (26 Nov 24)- Opted to walk 9 today (was the back nine as they had a huge group going off the front) but instead of it being persimmons and blades, I had the regular gamers but made it a TBWB (two ball-worst ball) round.  This really challenges on several fronts - ball striking to be as consistent as possible, course management from non-optimal lies and keeping your head in it as it can be depressing to nail a shot on line-on target and the second rattles the trees right and it’s over 50 yards back and that’s the one you have to play.  The goal was to be no worse than bogie overall (+9).  Finished the round exactly on the number with some solid recoveries, no penalty strokes and only one 3-putt.
