Sam Neill,  from Jurassic Park, is in it. Release is around The Masters. Looks great, but so far, having watched some of these kind of movies, there's only so much you can write given a golf story or maybe a good writer just hasn't had the time yet.

One of my all-time favorite books.  Hope the movie lives up to it.

Not sure about this but the gallery ropes at 0:55 look like an anachronism to me. I know the first US Open to use them was in 1954 but I don't know how much further back than that their usage goes.

Probably not a feature until crowds got large enough to warrant it.

As far as the movie as a whole, you can't ever be sure just based on previews, but it seems to have some meaty story angles and solid acting. The golf itself might be less compelling as it's not shown much.

Looks good. Book has been by the bath tub for a year or so now. I'm almost done. ;-)

Looks interesting, although the story seems a bit cliched.  Directed by Jason Connery, Sean's son, for whatever that's worth.  I don't have high expectations when it comes to golf movies.  But it's sure to be on the Golf Channel's heavy rotation in a year.

It's the story of Tom Morris, Jr.

It happened in real life.

Same here but this looks like it could be good. The story seems to revolve around his life/relationships and not just a tournament.

The wife and I are re-watching "The Greatest Story Ever Told, as I write this. Watched it for the first time a couple of days ago. This has elevated to one of my top ten sports movies of all time. Golf lends itself well to telling stories of the past. I wish I could find Glen Ford as Ben Hogan. That's a great story, too.

I love period pieces and costume dramas. I'm a history nut.

I loved the part where Jesus turned balls into strikes.

I think you meant The Greatest Game Ever Played. :-)

And yeah, I couldn't think of a good Jesus/sports joke. Something about overcoming adversity and bearing the cross of leading the masses, or maybe he played hockey for the Wheeling "Nailers" (oof!!), I dunno. I got nothin'. The Greatest Story Ever Told is a movie about Jesus. Charlton Heston and Max von Sydow, IIRC.

I'm a sucker for sports movies.  Looking forward to checking this out. It does look to be a little less golf centric which is probably a good thing.

Of course. What is there about 4 of 5 movies in the whole genre? How often does Golf Channel play tin cup and that most amazing story whatever movie?

Off the top of my head…

  1. Greatest Game Ever Played
  2. Tin Cup
  3. Caddyshack
  4. Caddyshack 2
  5. Happy Gilmore
  6. Follow the Sun
  7. Seven Days in Utopia
  8. Legend of Bagger Vance
  9. Dead Solid Perfect
  10. Bobby Jones: Stroke of Genius
  11. A Gentleman's Game
  12. The Squeeze
  13. Golf in the Kingdom

I think there are a few others. There was a comedy like "Who's Your Caddy?" or something too.

Thanks for the list. I wouldn't consider the inane Caddyshack movies or anything with Adam Sandler as part of the golf genre.

A new one I kind of liked is 5 Hour Friends.

To each his own, but in this case, I think you'll find yourself in a small minority.

Maybe. I'm a huge Bill Murray fan but his other movies are better. Sandler plays the same lovable dunce too often for me.

14. From the Rough

15. Little Loopers

I never thought there were many golf movies, until having Roku.  And I'll admit, I've watched them all now haha

Well, that's embarrassing. I can only say I can't tell the difference between an acid flashback and a senior moment.

    • I appreciate that you have taken the time to come back and update. Based on what was previously discussed I feel like the points were; forged, feel good, price, and possibly players distance. If you like the "looks" of those Maxfli irons and if price is a major point, then going straight to the source, Maltby, might make sense. Specifically, the TS3 iron. I was looking into this myself and found some reviews: Fit2YouGolf, Lets Play Thru, and ELITE FIT GOLF. As per your update I found the Maxfli to be ~$1300 fitted the way I wanted. Where the TS3 with the same fitting and assembled by Golfworks was less than $750. I suppose the downside is to actually hit the iron you will need to get lucky and find someone in your golf circle who will let you hit theirs or order a 6 or 7 iron to test. However, the way I look at that is being equivalent to some fittings. If you like the results and buy, then the fitting is free, otherwise the price of the fitting is a sunk cost. If name brand is important, then I submit for your consideration - THE BEST OVERALL IRON of 2024...... FACT !! 😉 A bit tongue in cheek that but also, I feel some good points were discussed.
