Except for forced carries, I see myself punching a 2 hybrid 100-150 yards all day.. :-\.

Looks to be 32 balls over 2 rounds, yes. And we don't know how many balls were actually lost. Just that he started with 36 and had 4 left after two rounds.

He could have lost provisional balls, they don't always count towards the score. And he could've lost multiple balls on some holes. He had two 5 over holes, four 4 over holes and two 3 over holes

True.  When the course becomes unplayable.  That's not happening here though.

I think it was unplayable on day 1.

Believe me, I think golfers whine too often and use LCP too often, but those conditions were unreal.

The other day, they had players commenting on conditions, and this one guy was super pissed that play continued, stating that viewers don't want to watch guys shoot in the 80's, that they want to see low scores.  Partly true yes, we want to see good play, but at the same time, it's entertaining to see them struggle this much.

The commentators talked about it continuing because of the sponsors.  The sponsors wanted this to continue and it did, I guess.  There were other reasons, I just don't remember them.

On that 88yd par 3, one of the groups had a guy hit a low PW while another hit a 7iron.  Lots of options, I guess.

Too much severe weather brings in luck not skill.

I'm not saying there isn't some luck involved, but there is skill in playing with that kind of wind.
I once played a course outside Corpus Christi that had 4 or 5 holes right on the Gulf; wind was gusting 20+ that day. The transition hole to get out to the Gulf holes was a par 3 about 135 yards and all the guys that i was playing with were insistent that it was an 8 or 9 iron. They were all way short as the wind was pushing the back towards us, I hit a knock down 4 iron that was my best shot of the day and made my par.
I'm guessing that Eason thought he could overpower the conditions, and he was committed to proving it.

Sometimes you have to take what the course is giving you; there were plenty of guys who did that in the 2nd round in the Bahama's, only 19 were 80 or worse.

Players play, tough players win!

Yes, exactly. Except I don't have that so I'd use my 3 iron.

I use old Taylor Made clubs from eBay and golf shops.

Well then not so bad ha ha. You think the pros ever play with a range ball when they know the wind is going to make them lose it anyway?

I'm curious as to the actual number, or how the "math" works out.

Let's assume he was gonna shoot 75-75 without losing any golf balls. That's 150.

Any time you lose a ball you're looking at a penalty stroke, or sometimes what amounts to two penalty strokes: stroke and distance. If you make a par with your third ball on a par three, you make a seven, not a five: that's four strokes for two balls.

So 32 balls lost is somewhere between 32 strokes (i.e. if you get to play without losing any distance) on a sliding scale up to 64 strokes lost (if it's pure stroke and distance: if you lose 100 yards of the 200-yard shot, it may cost 0.4 strokes, for example).

Yet he shot only 36 over what he would have playing relatively field average? With 32 balls? I dunno. :-) He must be counting balls he didn't lose but took out of play for some other reason, or gave to kids, or the standard bearer, or whatever.

I mean, if you actually lose 16 balls in a round of golf, you're probably not breaking 100.

Anyway, I couldn't believe they didn't just cancel the first round. What was their reason for continuing to play?

Losing provisional balls that end up not needed is one way to get up to that number without having a worse score. I don't know if I believe that theory, but it's a possible explanation. I know that PGA Tour players rarely hit provisionals, even when they really should be, so maybe it's the same of the Web.com tour.
