App page says requires iOS 8, if you've been upgrading, your phone should be on iOS 10. Bottom line is it should work on your 5. I keep a 5 around for a backup and it's still chugging along good.

I think the issue is fps on the camera and not the version of iOS.  240 fps only came in with the iPhone 6 and that is what the app uses to calculate speed.

Under the "description" it says that it's only compatible with the iPhone 6 or higher.  I'm guessing video resolution/speed might be a factor...?

Well, first off, it's only good outside. Not enough light inside for use it seems like which is kind of a downer. I just did the quick fitting to see how it works. I think if you're not perfectly perpendicular, it will give you inaccurate results because it will ask you to point a star at hosel at 2 close moments before impact as well as ball. They also have you place a known measuring stick in front of ball parallel to you as a fixed point. After doing two swings and having to point out these moments itll give you an average clubhead speed and distance.

Overall, I suppose its kinda cool but takes forever to capture the right moments it asks for. My normal driver swing speed is closer to 118mph so it was close in that aspect. Its not something that you can use for instantaneous results, itll take you 5min before itll give you anything.

Edit: I had a picture but it won't let me post it for some reason.  It gave me an average of 112mph club speed which came out to 282yd carry and 289 total.  It said the B330S would be the fitting ball for me.

Maybe after a future update, it will be a little better.  But for a start, it's interesting and something simple to try.

My mistake, I didn't read the description in detail enough. Makes sense it needs 240.

We've been having snow/cold/rainy days since I first tried it.  Since it has to be used outdoors, I won't be able to mess with it for a couple weeks maybe.

May try tonight. It is finally above freezing and not raining.

I went to try the app last night and found a major flaw. You need two people to use it. Unless I am missing something (the instructions are not that good), you need to get ready to swing and have a "buddy' push the record button. I did not have anyone around last night for that.

Now, it is going to snow tomorrow followed by an arctic blast for the weekend. So it may be a few days before I can try again.

Would a timer fix that?

Yeah, this is what it says in the press release:

"The app can be used virtually anywhere, including a driving range or on the course. All that is needed is a partner to record the user’s swing and follow the simple on-screen steps to retrieve launch conditions."

Agree.  Seems pretty simple.  A timer with some kind of audible count down.

It sounds like the intent is strictly as a ball fitting tool though.  Really kind of one-and-done.  Or at least very infrequent use, so maybe needing a partner isn't that big of a deal.  If it were ever designed and improved to the point that it became a viable practice/diagnostic tool, I could see the partner requirement being a huge detractor.

Maybe this explains their absence at the golf expo last weekend. The fitting booth has been replaced by an app.?

From what I understand, the golf ball fitting program as we knew it has been eliminated.  They are looking at offering other options, like the app and some other methods that are being considered.

I mentioned earlier that they have discontinued their golf ball fitting program, at least in the form that it was in the last 9 or 10 years.  All the techs were let go and ball fitting will take on a new form.

    • Sure, but how was your alignment? 🙂 Day 53 - 2024-11-22 Mirror work after getting back home. Wife is a superstar for her career/job/whatever.
    • I would say your back nine is the second nine you play that day. It's part of what makes getting some of those holes tougher. Or, if 18 holes are played pretty often, out of A, B, and C, and you often play A and C, A is the front and C is the back, regardless of the order you play them in. That way not birdieing C #7 isn't overcome by birdieing the easier A #7 on a day you played it C-A instead of A-C. But, at the end of the day, nobody really cares except yourself.
    • Day 128: played 9. Nice little even 9, with 2 birdies and 2 bogeys.
    • @DeadMan, I think your approach makes sense. As @dennyjones said, consistency is the key.
