Welcome to the "5 Minutes Daily" Practice Challenge for April, 2017! The rules are the same as always:

  • Make a detailed post describing your practice every day during the month. Try to limit the number of very short or "ditto" type posts. Describe what you did for at least five minutes of practice (indoors or out, with or without golf balls, etc.).
  • No back-dating or pre-dating posts or practice sessions.
  • On the last day of the month, if you completed the challenge, post about it in red text so I can notice it and give you the award.

Enjoy and practice hard!

Note: you can miss one day per monthly challenge if you have a good reason and still be eligible for the monthly award.

4/1/17:

Can't sleep so I worked on setup and balance in the mirror for about 10 minutes. Over the winter I received a few lessons for Christmas, the first thing my instructor noticed, I was too hunched over at address, which in turn made me stand up too much at the top and have to "dive" to hit the ball, which caused that ugly step through which you've all seen. So with the setup I'm standing taller than I was, by a lot actually, which actually has helped me gain a lot of balance, I don't step through really at all anymore and I'm getting my weight over to the left much better.

The drill I use for this is I take a normal setup and simulated backswing, I pause at the top and note where my weight is (I'm a visual learner), then by turning I shift my weight to my left side and squash the bug as they say. My set-up drill is the one @mvmac where you stand a few inches from the wall and bend from the waist until your butt hits it. Another thing was from many years playing clubs that didn't fit me properly (since my accident), was standing way too close to the ball. "I think eyes gaz e center" and not looking down and seeing my pontoon boats for shoes in my field of vision too much. Sure in my peripheral vision I will see them, but not having a half my field of vision taken up by shoes.

1/4/17 - Did some putting work really focusing on rocking my shoulders through the ball and hitting my start line. I'm still struggling a bit with distance control when I focus on the start line, but it's definitely getting better.

I'll find this month a lot tougher as we're on holiday in Rome for five days - need to find some indoor drills without a club!

Currently focusing on: Key 4 - shorter backswing.

4/1 - Played 36 today and shot a 79 and 80! Best rounds I've had in my imagination in a long time!

Actually, it's snowing outside, my arm is sore and I am grumpy. Did some putting in the basement and some slow swings with a hybrid shaft without the head.

4/1: 10 minutes on backswing and transition, focusing on handpath and club falling behind me.

@boogielicious- glad to see the imaginary version of your handicap index dropping- my imaginary index is on a downward trajectory too, and it's quite satisfying after the hard work over the winter I've put in! Oh, and I hope the pace of play of those rounds was faster than 4hrs each. Either that, or I hope you are a good multi-tasker.

20 min. Sklz swing trainer, 7 iron and driver

stop at the top, pump, step thru and full swings

alt 3/3 7 iron and driver swings

driver practice was bad except for end. Had trouble finishing full set with proper form

was trying for light set as I hit range and play against el Aleman tomorrow

game plan is to hit 10 or more FWs and 6 GIRs and no 3-putts. If I do, he's toast!

of course, I would do well to make sure that it's not an imaginary round a la @boogielicious and @RandallT

After morning Senior group coffee, went out and practiced on short game for 20 minutes.

Worked on club choice and ball position to maximize run-out on chip shots. I had reviewed Dave Pelz's Short Game Bible chapter on chips before going to course.

I'm getting better at using bounce - even on 8i chip - rather than hitting down on chips with leading edge. Getting more consistent distance control.

At end, I putted out chip shots to see if I could get up and down. Sometimes yes, sometimes no.

-------------

In PM: Cut the lawn for the first time. This included short trim for "practice green" and "practice tee" areas in back yard.

Focus, connect and follow through!

10 mins. OW drills (3 mains ones: balance/full turn; 1 hand on 1/2 swing hinge/release; full swings)--focus on core driving the swing
5 mins. Momentus full swing drills--focus on core driving the swing  (man 15 mins. w/these devices is a workout!)

2/4/17 - spent 10 minutes in front of a mirror rehearsing my backswing and takeaway again, trying to get the arms closer to my body as they're starting to creep out again

April 2, 2017.

Reviewed my Member Swing thread from 2016 (before I hurt my elbow).

I'm getting balanced position at the top with lead elbow (left) above trailing elbow (right). No chicken wing in waiting.

Also spend five minutes working on the External Rotation of Trailing Arm drill (radargolfpro via mcmac). Focused on doing it slowly to feel the rotation, and to maintain balance.

Focus, connect and follow through!

Was 1 day late getting to this due to travelling, but I'm in for the rest of the month.

Yesterday : 10 mins full swing practice with a 6 iron, working on maintaining the connection between arms and torso during the back swing.

Today: Further 10 mins full swing practice as above. Starting at about 50% speed, making the motions as smooth as I can, then trying to increase speed while remaining smooth and connected.

4/1 - 45 mins of hitting yellow foam balls w/8i working on turn. I seem to really want to draw the ball now that my turn is more centered.

4/02 - apparently my post from yesterday didn't go through. So see above. For today, I did some pitching in the back yard for a half hour.

4/2: Downloaded a metronome app and spent about 15 minutes working on tempo with practice swings. Used 3/8 and 6/8 time with clicks on the first beat to help feel a 3:1 ratio (backswing to downswing). Started very slow and mainly paid attention to turn and weight transfer and swing path. Increased the speed a couple times but still nothing close to a full-speed swing. I really liked this drill. Seemed to help it feel more natural to slow down and shorten the swing some.

    • 46+40 for an 86. I just need to play 9 holes on the range before each round. 🤣🤣🤣
    • I don’t measure my intake either. I generally have a black coffee, a bottle of soda, some sweet tea at home, and anything in between is water. An ice cold bottle of water is one of my favorite things. It feels like an immediate refresher for my body. I’ll admit that I need to drink a little more though.
    • For such a nice membership, there have been some bad incidents in the past few years.  We had someone voted out a couple of years ago over something he did and he harassed the board members for three months until he moved out of the area.   Generally they’ve tried to do things like tournament handicaps and identify certain people who they know should be lower and adjust it somehow.  I can understand not wanting to go thru something like the guy who was voted out again i emailed the pro who forwarded it to the handicap committee.  They are going to see what can be done.  I walked someone thru what happened and they are going to nudge him to post the score from the match and see what he does.  Since he didn’t put anything in the electronic scoring past 13, based on how he played 14 and 15 plus having to take bogey on 16-18 for after he left, he should post 83.  We’ll see if it’s even higher,   Since he was really even thru 13, then doubled 14 and parred 15 my guess is he really shot 75 being generous and giving him 2 pars and a bogey on the three holes he didn’t play.    i shot 88, getting 16 shots for my course handicap which is net even and I lost on 13.  We do brackets where handicaps should be within 4-5 of each other.  Most matches only have 1-2 shots as a difference between players  neither of us posted the score yet.  There was something in the match play rules about whether or not to post your score.  I couldn’t remember if we were supposed to or not.  I don’t think he was going to post that, because even with his inflated score it would be the lowest score in his recent 20. Lucky I didn’t because they want to see what he does post and they don’t want me posting so he can try to calibrate his score.
