Couldn't find a thread about him, which is shocking. Who else is all in on him? It is amazing how much power he gets with that short backswing, and the dude is just always on the leaderboard. Look at what he's done since the beginning of the year:

  1. CareerBuilder - T34
  2. Torrey Pines - Win
  3. Phoenix - T16
  4. Pebble - T5
  5. WGC Mexico - T3
  6. Match Play - 2
  7. Houston Open - T10
  8. Masters - T27
  9. Wells Fargo - 4
  10. The Players - T72
  11. Colonial - T2

Probably the best year of anyone not named Dustin Johnson. Plus, some of the stories/innuendo out there about him are just great. Really hoping he doesn't take up European Tour membership, because he'll be a monster at the Ryder Cup.

I think he has the perfect game for a place like Erin Hills... You heard it here first.

DJ and JT are the only players who have won twice this year (although if you go back in the fall last year, then Hedeki has, too). Sergio, I suppose, but he hasn't had a T10 outside of the Maters. I also put a lot of stock in the WCG events, because of the field in those. Rahm is 4th in the FedEx Cup, behind Hedeki and JT, who I don't think have been as consistent. 2nd in strokes gained. So yeah.

Rahm's amateur career is also great. He's not a flash in the pan.

I don't think he's ahead of Justin Thomas.  I appreciate consistency, and I don't revere the majors as much as others, but three wins beats one win.

He does have the 6th-best odds in Vegas right now...so maybe they heard it first?  :-P

He's my go to guy right now to always be in the running. Such a powerful player and he kind of stays below the radar, which seems to be working for him.

Agree with others that he's still behind Thomas and Matsuyama for the season, but, yeah, I'm a big fan.

I also love that his swing is closest in length to mine of all guys on tour. :)

No, but compared to the hype that the spectacular flop Dechambeau has become..I'm liking Rahm! BD was hyped like a first round NFL pick...and if this was football ..he'd have been traded already.

I'm not sure if that's mathematically possible, but certainly by 2019

Even Patrick Reed only claimed top 5 after his first win! ;-)

Honestly though, the guy is the real deal and I expect him to be a force for a long time.

Yeah I know but this guy is more powerful than Reed plus he seems to be a  factor every tournament.

Could be a flash in the pan, too.

It's possible, but I would be pretty surprised. He was the #1 amateur in the world for 60 weeks. He won a bunch of awards in college. Guys with that caliber of an amateur career don't usually flame out after one good year. Hell, most of the guys who won a Hogan award in the past decade+ are regulars on tour. Sort this by total weeks as World Amateur #1: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Amateur_Golf_Ranking. That list is pretty impressive.

Ryan Moore Bryston DeChambeau had good years as amateurs, too. History is paved with promising amateurs.

I'm not saying he WILL flame out, just that he could… he's got a lot of competition.

Yeah kind of like how anybody that won a couple and had some top 10's was the "new" Tiger a few years ago. The press proclaimed a new Tiger every couple of months until it was just a bunch of talented guys alternately winning. Rahm hasn't done anything yet that demonstrates he is going to distance himself from a very deep field.

And an other win for Rahm at the Irish open. I put my money on him the next couple of rounds including the Open.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
