You definitely see a lot of it in Silicon Valley, vacations areas where management go on holiday. Still, cycling is an excellent way to get some exercise. Just dial down the kits.

is someone who rides an expensive racing bicycle[1] for leisure, wearing professional style body-hugging jerseys and shorts.[2]

Like a lot of purpose made clothing, it serves a purpose way beyond style that isn't necessarily apparent to those that don't ride...

I've ridden centuries, I understand the need for bike shorts. Kits are still way outlandish walking billboards.

As opposed to, say, having golf manufacturer logos on your bag, hat, shirt, etc...?

There's a big difference between this

and this:

I'm sorry, we'll have to agree to disagree, some of the bicycle jerseys people wear are tacky, I don't want to be a walking shill. The example above is pretty tame. If you want to get a golf bag that has certain features, you have no choice, you have to buy that bag with all the labeling. You can buy a bicycle jersey that has very little labelling easily.

Then don't wear that. :-D

Regardless of how they're embellished, and I'll agree that personal style is personal, cycling kit is designed to be comfortable and functional for the job for which it's designed.  I imagine you didn't wear athletic shorts and a cotton t-shirt when you rode a century.  At least I hope not! ;-)

I personally don't like jerseys that advertise.   If I have a choice, I'll opt for a solid color, breathable, comfortable jersey.

I'm mostly referring to jerseys with 48 advertisers emblazoned on every spare inch. If you're part of a bike club or expressing something you like, like dinosaurs that's fine although everyone has their own idea of tastefulness, I get it. Everyone has a right to express themselves freely without criticism. Bicycle tops with the pockets in the back are a must. Those pockets are invaluable. This is what I'd wear.

If Lee Westwood's shirt with all the patches, delivery company, big conglomerate, big auto parts company, etc... on it were on sale no way in hell I'd buy that. You'd have to pay me I dunno, a not trivial amount of money to wear it. A very not trivial amount of money.

I rode this weekend. I wore a solid blue top and solid black bike shorts with black basket ball shorts over it. Almost every cyclist I passed looked like they were in the Tour de France.

I used to race and our team kit had a lot of logos on it from sponsors. But now I wear BRIGHT yellow or orange shirts. I want to be seen by the idiot drivers. Even with bright clothes, it is dangerous and I spend most of my rides in the woods.

I was hit by a car years ago, before Smart phones, in broad daylight. I was lucky and rolled to safety when they broadsided my back wheel.

Logos on jerseys are an "embedded" thing in cycling, very hard to get around, I get I'm an outlier in this case. Just because Loudmouth makes pants doesn't mean you have to buy them. I guess this is my get off my lawn modesty and decorum post. I dunno what makes some people act like peacocks when they get on a bike. Get off my lawn. :-D

If I feel there are especially dangerous drivers around, will break out the neon vest and blinkys. Hmmm, do they make handlebar cams? :-P
