I was never a fan of hybrids.  They were all "hooky" for me.  I have tried many and none worked for me.  I tried the Apex hybrids and for me they are fade biased. More than that I can hit them high or low and draw or fade them as much as I am capable with an iron.

I started with a 2 hybrid.  Good off the tee and the turf.  Added a 3 then a 4.  Then I asked myself why not a five.  I found myself wanting to choke down on a 4 hybrid rather that hitting a 5 iron and the 5 iron was one of my favorite clubs!

I took the plunge and got the 5 hybrid.  My first impression is it is my new favorite club.  I know there is all kinds of manly BS about hybrids especially a 5 but  the other guy snickers on the first tee and I pocket his money on the last.

I've gone "full chopper" and have got 4H through 7H.  I'm not a fantastic golfer but my logic is why would you want to make a very difficult game any harder than it needs to be.  My bag does look a bit silly mind you....

I have one... I play it sometimes... Mostly 3 and 4 hybrid, in the bag, typically just the 3-hybrid, but it might be time to take the plunge...

No. Just no. Only acceptable hybrid is a 3 hybrid, and that is a stretch.

What is wrong with playing a club that makes a difficult game a little easier?

You are entitled to your opinion, but some people don't have A) the clubhead speed to hit longer irons or B) The consistency to warrant having them in the bag.

I can hit long irons, but choose to play a 3 hybrid and sometimes a 4 hybrid. I may even play a 5-hybrid (Though I hit my 5-iron well)

Golf is hard. Why not make it a little easier?

In my opinion, it's up to the individual golfer what clubs he/she plays. @inthecup just was trying to get feedback from us. As part of this community, @chillydip please attempt to add to the discussion. Explain your opinion, that would add to the discussion.

I am a traditional golfer. I do not condone the use of these hybrid woods. Players should be rewarded for their practice and ability to hit certain shots - not going to a pga superstore and getting fitted for some super light shafted 23 degree wood that the fitter tells them is now their 5 iron.

Ok, that's a reasonable explanation, I suppose.

So you are telling me that a lady who has a driver clubhead speed of 60 mph, should be playing long irons?

If a fitter tells me that a 25° hybrid is a better fit for my game than my 5-iron, I'm going to listen to the fitter.

My wife has a 6-hybrid, you're telling me that she should hunker down and play a 6-iron.

@inthecup It sounds like you can go to a 5-hybrid, if you so choose. They are great clubs, don't listen to this guy.

Thanks. I don't need permission nor do I care what others think.

I am sure chilidip is playing persimmon and a balata ball.  Because those new metal headed woods are not traditional and don't reward skill.... He is just choosing the "non traditional" gear he wants.

I turn 53 tomorrow, if wearing a sparkly thong made me play better the only question would be what color.

Go through a couple of shoulder surgeries and 5 decades and come back and talk to me.

Let the bag look silly, and then shoot a great score.  Now whose bag looks silly?

Time was people laughed at some guy in the pros using a pink shaft in his driver.  Then they saw him hit his tee shots and stopped laughing.  Now it's part of the Bubba Watson legend.

Balata?!  No, no, no, that's not traditional. He said he is a traditional golfer, so surely he is playing a leather ball stuffed with feathers, that he imports (hand crafted) from Scotland. And he hits that ball further than you hit your driver and modern ball even though he is playing a wedge designed 500 years ago.

I may buy an entire set of hybrid irons, something like the Tour Edge Hot Launch 2. I messed with a combo set of the Cleveland 588 Altitude, MT and TT a few years ago. Still use the Altitude gap wedge, big wide sole almost impossible to hit fat. I'd love to have that much forgiveness in my 7-8-9-PW.

I've messed around with some hybrids, but always struggled with pushing them. Recently, however, I came across an old Wilson Multimetal 4H. My distance-challenged butt hits that 165-170 and that's perfect between my 5I and 5W since I try to never touch the 4I or 3I.

I too replaced my 5i with a 5h this year ... main reason is playing out of the deep rough for missed fairway approach shots - absolutely fed up with trying to chop long itons out of the rough - it was jacking up my elbow to the point where I had to start wearing a compression sleeve.  The 5h is SO much better out of the rough.   I'm learning, I like it better of the fairway (more consistent), and even prefer it off the tee now.

My "signature" doesn't list all the hybrids I own. All are so much easier for me to hit than fairways. But I have found the direct iron replacement hybrids work even better many times. They are my new favorite in my quest to lower my HI. I do however practice with long irons because I will use them occasionally.  -Marv

    • That suprises me,nevertheless you didnt touch on seve's swing and I like that..
    • I don't think this was a last man standing win. The drive on 17 has gotta be an all-timer at a US Open though. Talk about hitting it on the screws at a peak moment! And then doesn't blink on the big 18th either. 100% deserved win.    I was pulling hard for Adam and Viktor though. I hope Viktor can put it together and get one across the field soon. I do think the denial of drop at 15 got in Burn's head.  The cabbage seemed like it was singularly most defining aspect of the championship (as expected..). I hate to revel in the misfortunes of the cabbage victims but it was so entertaining. Surviving it was like surviving hell week. Cut the bombers down to size. I tried so hard to not laugh at this..🤣. But here's one for the short stubby guys with a total dad-bod (wink-wink)!
    • I think Freddie's swing kind of stinks.
