In Northern California, with relatively low humidity (in the 20-40%), I can manage to walk with a push cart up to 95F, even with some hills, but those really kick my butt.

Flat courses are a no brainer but on hilly ones, I really have to think about it, having nearly collapsed once on an elevated 18th green: it was a good thing that I had partners with a cart to drive me back to the club house and get me some cold towels on my head. It was a close call...

A couple of Sundays ago I played in 93+ temps here in the Baltimore area.  Something I've done before. I walk with a push cart and umbrella, try to keep hydrated, but this time apparently not well enough. I had a similar experience where after walking off 18 I had to sit in the shade for about 30 mins. before packing up and going home. I'm re-thinking what my temp limit will be going forward as it was a bit scary. On the other hand, and despite a mostly crappy back 9 I managed to par the last three holes; I felt like a zombie on 18.

BTW sjduffers, I used to play at Santa Teresa quite a lot when I still lived in San Jose. Miss that course. Rawitzer really improved it from how it was when I was in high school. :-)

I like to walk exec/par3 courses. Regulation courses if they are fairly flat. I'm going with 75-80 degrees as my limit

I walk in 90's and low 100's all the time here in New Mexico.  I weigh about 10lbs less when I get home :-$

I prefer to walk and two weeks ago I went out at about noon. It was 90 degrees and high humidity. Brutal. One thing I've changed and maybe pushing past 50 has taught me that carrying a bag is firmly in my rearview mirror. I recently purchased a ClicGear 3.5 and it's made a world of difference. But I'll stick to waking at 7 AM which is the proper time to walk... for me, for many reasons.

We were definitely not walking in Phoenix.  I've walked in the DC area, in pretty good humidity, in temps up to around 90.  I've clocked my water intake on those days, and I've had on the order of 8 refills of a 20-ounce gatorade bottle.

That's nothing.

I carried Dave's staff bag around French Lick for the PNC on a hilly Ross course on a day when it was 110 (when we sat to eat at 9pm it was still 99) with 80-85%.

We each drank 24 of the 20-ounce bottles of water that day. I was grabbing six at a time on almost every tee box. We didn't pee the whole day. Another caddie in a group in front of us got second degree burns touching the silver metal cooler chest to grab water near mid-round. Went to the hospital. Very little shade around that Ross course.

110 with a staff bag..?? I think that's when caddies start praying their boss misses the cut..lol!

I don't walk anymore but not because of the temps, it's because of my knees! I actually like to play when it's hot. The ball flies real well and the joints feel a little looser!

But you have to be careful out there when the temps and humidity are extreme. My oldest golf buddy recently told me that he felt the Sun was hotter these days, and it really took the starch out of him! After observing a group of kids in a local park I was able to tell him, with full confidence, that the Sun isn't any hotter. We're just older!

My apologies if this has already been discussed, but does anyone use an umbrella on their push cart? Does that help at all w/ the sun?

I have made a tee time for this Wednesday not realizing it was going to be 100F at noon and 107F four hours later. Humidity 26%. I rarely get a window to leave work early so I'm loath to back out. Really kind of a bummer.

Have seen a few people using an umbrella on their push cart here and wondered the same thing.

Fortunately for me the temps don't get that hot here compared to Austin and Dallas.  Hottest I will walk with a push cart is mid to high 90's.  Hotter than that I'll still play, but that is definitely riding temps......

That is truly an amazing account!  It's crazy that PGA Tour players would have to wear pants under those conditions!

I live and play in the Baltimore area  and have a push cart with an umbrella holder. I always use the umbrella when it is hot (85+) or a warm day without clouds. It makes a huge difference as just getting under the umbrella will lower the temp several degrees. I will often have playing partners take advantage of my umbrella too.

It is similar to when I am playing in the Palm Springs area during the hot months where I will look for shade areas on each hole and take advantage of them. You will not regret using the umbrella on the cart. That and drink lots of water on the hot days.

I only ride these days, but was a dedicated walker for 10-15 years.   Back in the day when I walked, there was no temp limit!!    I used a pull-cart so carrying a large bottle of water wasn't an issue.  A 1 liter bottle was a minimum, and I'd drink it down and refill at every opportunity along the way.  Another staple from my walking days..... I carried a rosin bag to dry the hands as needed.

My water bottles have grown larger with old age... Even though I ride now, I carry a 64oz bottle of water.  LOL

I disagree, but I've shared my thoughts on pants vs. shorts many times before. Modern pants are equally as cool while also keeping your legs in the shade, free of bugs, the sun, etc.

Depends in part of where you are and what you're used to. I'm up near Chicago and many front nine walkers become cart players on the back nine when it's 85F. I'm sure players in TX, AZ and other areas would say WTH?

Played ~102F with a heat index even higher, very high humidity, at one point last year. I was the only person to walk the course that day.

I drank (4) 32-oz hydroflasks of my signature 10% orange juice and 90% water blend and also (1) 12-oz gatorade. Also didn't pee until after I got home but I didn't feel sick. So apparently I got it just right. Which is a scary thought. a few ounces less and I might have been in trouble.

I also learned that day that when playing in those conditions you ought to have the phone number of the clubhouse, just in case. Someone recommended that on these boards a while back. Heat stroke can come very quickly.

Harder for me to answer since I usually play 9, but I'd be inclined to say 105.  That was the temperature (with 90-something percent humidity) of a soccer game I played in high school a few years back where the ref had to call the game at halftime after 2 kids passed out.

I always walk because I enjoy it (and to save money) but I don't think I could do much more than the ~100 degrees I played in about a month back.  There were big triangles of sweat on the front of my shorts from where they contact the front of my legs during each step. I got a kick out of that.

I played/walked 18 holes in 103F last week, the front nine was great and the back not so much.. So I will say 9 holes is about all I can handle in the extreme heat. FWIW I used an umbrella and brought two hydroflasks, plus a Gatorade.

Noteworthy this round featured two firsts: I had multiple birdies in the same round, and, I witnessed a squirrel purposely move my ball (very weird).

    • Day 23: weird day, and only had a little bit of time. Just did mirror work again, working on where the elbow is in the downswing
    • I flipped over to this tonight and thoroughly enjoyed it. Anyone else watch? I picked it up during the golf relay event, but seeing these pros out having fun in alternative events was refreshing and entertaining. I’m sure it will be on in reruns in the next week or so, so I won’t spoil the outcome. Im curious what others thought of it. I’m recording it’s later airing to see the beginning.
    • Day 443 - 2025-12-17 Made a few swings in testing some things out at another academy. Might pop up on someone else's podcast in a few weeks.
    • Day 37 (17 Dec 25) - nine hole round with my good friend.  We got paired up with a couple of the men’s group regulars as part of their shootout.  Started off with a wonderful quad bogie and then a dbl on three to be six over thru three holes.  Game went 180° over the next five as I shot one under (including a chip in birdie on hole six and four up and down 1 putt pars) for a net finish of five over. What could have been a really tough nine became a solid finish due to staying in the moment and not checking out.  Great day in course management and keeping perspective .
    • Day 127 12-17 Backswing and flow practice. Took advantage of the 60 degeee weather(it was 20 degrees Sunday)
