So I’m looking for a new driver for next season. Currently playing a Callaway X2 hot but I’ve narrowed the new driver down to the Ping G400, Titleist 917 or the Taylormade M2. Any thoughts on which one is best or the order which you’d go for?

My last 2 drivers have been in the Ping G line (G15 and G30), and I’ve been really happy with both.  Based on that, personally I’d start with the Ping G400.

However, @Buckeyebowman is right... “go hit them”

Does your shop have a hitting bay w/launch monitor?

He's in Scotland, I doubt if there are any.

@Davie81 what shaft flex and head loft are you considering?
Playing on many link courses I would suggest a lower loft for a lower launch.
Since you most likely play under windy conditions, my choice of play would be a low bullet which would hit the ground running shot.
The TM will most likely play better than a high launch driver.
I play the Titleist 917 and can control the launch.

I prefer the Ping and the M2...distance and forgiveness.  More than the Titleist will give u.  I'd give the nod to the M2 because of the long list of free shaft upgrades.  I assume you're getting fit.

Ping is a great driver from what I've read but there is only one or 2 free shaft choices.

May not be responsive, @Davie81. but while I cherish my old Call away, I'm looking at the new Mizuno. Their tests (THEIR tests) are pretty impressive. Regardless how you go, I would be interested to here what you choose and why. Best wishes, -Marv

I've been looking for the same, a newer used driver that will be more forgiving, but won't necessarily break the bank. I've been looking at the Taylor Made Aeroburner, just gotta find one for the right price. I do like the look of the Ping G400, very sharp, indeed.

Hit the ping demo tonight and it felt amazing! Titleist demo next week and they’ve got their work cut out for them. Clubrat, Scotland’s not in the dark ages. We have fitting centres and trackman!

Just bought a used in very good condition, Ping G10 Driver for $35. Granted, it's almost a 10 year old driver, but it's a hell of a lot newer than the driver I'm currently using, so a win/win, ha. Looking forward to trying out!

A few years ago I aquired a used TM R5 that was worlds better than my old driver. I'm now playing a TM AeroBurner, 9.5 loft with a stiff shaft, i got at Dicks for $179. Super easy to hit, and straight too.

As allways you should try them first. I thought i would go for The Callaway epic sub zerro, but i didn’t like The feel at all, this is a personal thing. Not saying iT is a bad club. I ended up with Titleist 917 D3 but The mizuno JPX 900 was pretty good at 2nd. Try what feels best for you and than dail in The settings and shaft.

I played the X2Hot as a rental in Sept - loved it.  For more current drivers I've tried the M2 and the Epic.  I absolutely WANT the Epic.  However, I can wait a generation or two for the price to come down.

Asking around on forums is no replacement vs getting a good fitting with the right equipment, monitors, and advice.

If I was looking, I would have to look at the soon to be released PING G400 Max.  If I was considering the G400, I think I would wait to test the max just to see the difference.

The Callaway Rogue is also appealing, though a bit more pricey.

The G400 keeps whispering in my ear, but I think I will stick with my Titleist for now, though I may try another shaft.

I can tell you this from experience, I went from a 2016 M2 to a 2017 M1 and I'm glad I did. I didn't lose any distance (might have gained a few yards) but I hit the M1 much straighter. The price just came down on the M1 so you may want to take a look at that. I didn't think I needed/wanted all that adjustability but I'm glad I made the switch.

My bag:

Taylor Made R7 (x-stiff).
Taylor Made Burner 2 irons (stiff)
Cleveland Wedges (gap and 60)
Odyssey two ball putter (white)

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
