So, during the early coverage of yesterdays 2nd round of the Race to Dubai finale, the tv commentators made an announcement that unfortunately they would only be able to show footage of Jon Rahm during his round from aerial or fixed cameras. This, apparently, was due to him complaining to the European tour that the mobile camera crews around the course were bothering him and pointing cameras at him during his first round.

As im sure you all know he's a bit of a hot head on the course and it was only a few weeks ago at the Spanish open that he screamed at a Camera man whilst walking off the tee to 'stop pointing his camera at him, and point it at someone else'

Now i don't know about you guys but i think this is absolutely disgusting behavior from a professional golfer who make their millions because all the TV rights/Sponsors etc, who the hell does he think he is !!! And also shame on the European Tour for allowing him to make such demands and not putting him in his place.

Im pretty sure the PGATour wouldn't stand for it, and i guess the only reason the European Tour haven't taken a stance is because they don't want to upset a big draw player.

I don’t know about the last two days, but I’m watching round 3 right now and they’re showing Rahm teeing off on the 15th hole from what appears to be a mobile camera.  He’s paired with Rose, who’s tied for the lead, so I imagine it would be unusual not to have a mobile camera with a leader.  Maybe Rahm and the powers that be worked things out.

I’d hardly call it ‘disgusting behavior.’ Poulter, Bubba, have touched on that level, but it’s just a little douche in imo at most.

Rahm has previously conducted himself somewhat questionably from reports. He's developing a rep.

Sometimes pro golfers forget that they are entertainers, and are supposed to be entertaining the fans with their professional play.

I wouldn't know who Rahm is if he introduced himself to me.

Sounds to me almost like the Tiger tantrums from when spectators took pictures in the gallery. Then again, he usually only got pissed if it went off before he hit the ball, but still.

Some pros just really don't like the "distraction" of cameras. It's nothing necessarily new, but I'd be surprised if he doesn't receive a talking to if he continues to berate cameramen.

I'm guessing you don't follow tour golf too much then

I think whats different and quite unprecedented here was that he actually succeeded in stopping any mobile camera crews from following him for round 2. What argument he actually put to the European Tour / TV crews, and what changed between round 2 and round 3 when things appeared to be back to normal i would certainly be interested to know

Sometimes I wonder what is worse. The athlete or the fans who think they have ownership of anything the athlete does just because they happen to think their money gives them the right to do so.

If it's Rahm's position that he isn't there to entertain you, but to make a living at something he does well, then fine. He has the right to consider golf as a job versus an entertainment business.

Big guy, tall, Caucasian, Spanish, dark hair, not exactly a flat belly - stocky, his swing is a blur from the top. Seems a hothead, but then, he is from Spain.

    • Hit my tee shot just into the penalty area and barely found it. Swung hard just in case I hit it. It was slightly downhill with a heavy tailwind. I don't actually hit my 9i 170 yards.
    • Right. The difference between being 120 out and 70 out for me (this is the important part) is negligible and not worth putting other risks into play off the tee.   Ok the argument against driver is that my shot cone is comically large. It puts every possible outcome into play. You can't see the green from the tee so there's a good chance I'd have to wait for it to clear which would slow down play. That's the third tee right in the middle of the firing range there. I really don't want to wait just to hit a terrible shot and I especially don't want to injure somebody. Yea I have no problem playing out of the rough short of the bunker if I'm just going to lay up short of the bunker, but I absolutely need to avoid flaring it right into the penalty area if I'm going to be laying up in the first place. As a general strategy I understand where you're coming from. But since we're specifically talking about me (this is a shot I'm going to have to hit on Saturday), I think the cost is fairly marginal. I hit the ball 8' closer on average from 50-100 than I do from 100-150 from the fairway and rough and the green success % difference is 4%. Bunker might as well be a penalty drop. Based on the data,  Here's my SG:A data compared to a 10: I honestly don't know how to use SG for decision making. That's why I was mostly looking at proximity to hole and green success rate for comparison. I mostly use SG as a way to track my progress. All good. Like I said, I appreciate the discussion. It makes me think. If I didn't want to see alternative/opposing viewpoints to my own I just wouldn't post anything. You should post it! In your own swing thread, of course. It's been a fun exercise.
    • Played my first 2024 round at Pierce Lake. Boomed my first drive down #10 fairway, then slowly slipped into mediocrity. 83 (69.6/131). The high point was going 2 of 4 on sand saves. My sand game is pretty marginal but today I must have discovered the secret for a couple hours.
