That's not 15%. 17-18% of 228 + 228 is 268ish. Truthiness. Not so sure I'd want this guy giving me yardages? Or if this is how good at math caddies typically are that explains why some are misclubbing.

Also nice to see players of Indian descent doing well. Suri on the European Tour and Sharma.

Nevets, you've made a basic math error, A 15% reduction in yardage estimation means you multiply the yardage by .85. Just do the math. 268 x .85 equals 227.8 yards, rounded up to 228 just like on the yardage card. Too bad for "bad karma" Sharma, but he made a nice check and should qualify for some other tour events.  But this was pressure like he's never felt it before. One thing I wonder. I've never seen soo many hole outs! Both last year and this. Yet, a lot of players seemed to have problems putting on those greens! BTW, congrats to Phil. Humng in there like a champ. But what's up with him on #11?

It’s an increase in yardage in Mexico though. Not a decrease.

Yea it just wasn't smart....even by Phil standards. No need to take a fairway wood out of the rough off a side hill lie on a tight hole. Just lay up and wedge the third shot in close for birdie. With how bunched and solid the leaderboard was, I thought carding a 6 there was going to cost Phil the tournament.

I was glad to see Phil get the win though. Seems well deserved with how well he's been playing this year.

Congrats to Mickelson. But someone should go to the spot where he hit through the trees, attempt it 10 times, see how many times it goes through cleanly. Maybe there is an opening the video is hiding. I'm gonna bet this season, not a few people are going to take that risky shot because of watching Mickelson's recovery.

Tony Finau with a huge recovery slice, you can really see the ball bend here. Almost see the entire ball flight.

Just an observation here: THE FACE IS NOT POINTED WHERE YOU WANT THE BALL TO END UP. I mean, JC on a cracker, you'd have to have the face pointing 90 degrees open.

The ball flies farther at higher altitude, therefor an increase for each club.

Quote
  • The golf ball flies further in high altitudes mainly due to the change in air density, which decreases as elevation increases. Thinner air exerts less drag force on the ball. The ball moves more easily through the air and doesn't slow down as quickly as it flies, resulting in greater distance.

The ball goes farther at higher altitudes.

I heard throughout the week that the ball goes between 15 and 18% farther in Mexico, but I'm wondering if they're not just saying a 15% increase, and arriving at the same number in two different ways.

1/0.85 is ~1.18, which is an 18% increase.

228 to 268 is about an 18% increase. It's also an 15% reduction.

But doing it in the reduction direction doesn't make much sense, except that this is likely how you have to calculate yardages on the course most of the time. So let's assume you're on the course and you get a yardage to the pin of 185. Let's say the ball goes 18% farther… it's easier, rather than guessing at a club and multiplying how far you hit that by 1.18 (or dividing by 0.85; same thing) and seeing if you guessed the correct club, to just multiply the yardage by 0.85 (a 15% reduction), to get what the yardage plays like.

So if you have 185, you multiply that by 0.85, which means that the 185 yard shot will play like a 157-yard shot. So whatever club you hit from 157, you play that one. That club will then go 18% farther, or 185.

So maybe the original chart (bottom of post) was the "plays like" chart, not the "here's how far my clubs actually go here" chart. Maybe the "plays like" yardage is 15% less, because the ball actually travels 18% farther.

Daniel Berger likely doesn't have a 333 carry club, but if there's a bunker at 333 his normal 285-yard carry should be about the right number (285 x 1.17 = 333.45).

If he has to carry a bunker at 288, a 3W might do it if he normally can carry his 3W 245 (245 * 1.18 = 289, and 288 * 0.85 = 245).
