A long time to go yet, form in the coming weeks will be crucial.

Olessen is on good form, but will probably force his way in if he maintains it. I haven't seen enough from Sergio to warrrant a pick, I don't think he should get there on reputation alone. If he looks good during August, maybe.

Poulter should be picked too, due to prior record and good form this year.

Woods looks easily good enough to justify a pick in the USA team.

Wait! We Euro’s get to make the Euro picks. So Poulter is a 100% pick. Pieters, Garcia and Stenson also must pick’s.

Isn't about time to let Poulter ride off into the sunset on this thing?  only thing he can do now is damage his reputation as a great Ryder Cup player.

If Europe wants to win this thing, get those old guys outta here and get ThunderBear in the mix!

I really hope Webb Simpson does not end up on the Ryder Cup team. Comparing him to the rest of the names on the American list ... ugh.

Beyond the list, I think Tiger is a 100% lock to be on the team. Captain's picks for both sides will be really interesting this year. The US has a bunch of young, upcoming players like Xander and Finau, and a bunch of stalwarts like Kuchar and Phil to choose from. From what I saw about the course at the French Open, you need someone who is really accurate off the tee. I doubt Furyk will do it, but I think that means you leave Phil at home.

If I'm Furyk, here's who I'm picking:

  • Tiger
  • Kuchar
  • Xander
  • Harman (off the wall pick, but he's a bulldog and perfect for match play, in my opinion)
  • I'm also hiring someone to injure Webb Simpson so he doesn't finish in an automatic spot

Europe is interesting, too. By the way, the Ryder Cup website has Paul Casey as the 8th player, not Olesen. I think you have to take Stenson and Poulter, and then it's a bunch of wildcards after that. Fitzpatrick is probably a good player for the course. Sergio is probably going to be the other pick, but he hasn't really played all that well this year, so I'm not sure I would want to take him. I don't think you take Pieters - he's been bad this year.

Huh? Really? Simpson has been one of the best players on the U.S. team this year. Seven top-10s, ran away from the field at Sawgrass, contended at the British. Former U.S. Open champ and has experience. I would hope he makes the team. He's one of the Americans most solid players this year.

I remember they played a Shell's Wonderful World of Golf on a course in Paris on the show's revival around 2000, it matched Colin Montgomerie against Furyk? i think. Anybody know if this is the same course they played then?

This is the Poultergeist, he’s under the US-players skin. He is even under @iacas skin. We Euro’s are not letting him go, he needs to irritate the heck out of you US-guys 👹

I have a sour taste in my mouth because of what happened in 2014 with him being picked. I also really hate watching his game.

I also think he's riding a hot putter to his success, which doesn't normally indicate long-term success. He's 43rd in strokes gained tee-to-green, which is pretty meh for a guy on a Ryder Cup team. 138th off the tee, which is bad. I don't think his game is all that good. His Players win was driven by insane putting: 2.34 strokes gained putting. I think it was a fluke, and I don't trust that he'll be good at the Ryder Cup.

yeah, I had corrected this in post #3.   A little confusion between the Europe Rankings/World Rankings criteria for Europe's automatic selections.

I wouldn't call it a fluke. I mean, the guy is also a U.S. Open champ and has had a lot of good finishes this year and over his career. A fluke is when you win and have nothing else to back it up. I think he's deserving of being one of the guys on the team unless he shits the bed from now until the rest of the team. The big difference between this year and 2014 is he's played well in the big events. T20 at Masters, T-10 US Open, Win at Players and T-12 at Open.

As for 2014, he shouldn't have been picked. He went into that Ryder Cup playing horribly. He missed the cut at the Players, the Open and the PGA. He had 3 top-5 finishes in small events. Outside of that, it was missed cuts and poor finishes. And he definitely shouldn't have been paired to play with Watson. Given how poorly he was playing going into that Cup, he should have just been saved for the singles competition.

He’s not under my skin. If anything I’ve proven that I can get under his. ;-)

I am pretty much in agreement with this post. But as I referenced earlier, I think Phil will get one of the spots. Even if it's the right move, I don't think Furyk will want to be the "bad guy" and leave Phil off.

Yeah, I think you're right. Phil is 10th right now in the standings, and assuming he doesn't get hurt, he's probably a lock. It would be fine if he's playing 3 times, and only fourball, but you know he'll demand to play more than that and play foursomes as well. Foursomes for Phil on this course is probably not going to be ideal.

Self explanatory. Read the OP in the relevant topic.

I couldn't care much less about Ian Poulter. But he saw fit to cuss and scream in front of children, women, and fans because he thought I took a photo ten seconds after he hit a putt, and then just continued to say "it wasn't me."

So… yeah. The original comment was mostly sarcastic, but it's closer to accurate than not.

I've read the thread, and remembered the story. Can't justify his actions, and won't attempt to. I also don't blame you for feeling the way you do. But come on, let's be fair here. If you and him were in the same room, he wouldn't know you from Adam, and the first thing you would do is remember what happened. Who's in who's head? Not to mention you started a thread to tell everyone about it. Then say it proves you can get in his head but he's not in yours?

I never said he would.

You're taking this far, far, far more seriously than it was originally typed.

Lighten up. You missed the ;-) on the first post, and me saying it was mostly sarcastic in the second post.

    • I don't think anyone will really care.   It's your call.  Just be consistent.
    • I agree, until we are watching the 18th hole in the dark or waiting for the champion to finish and it's been 5+ hours
    • Question for the group. The course I normally play at has 27 holes - 3 9s that they use to for 18 in the various combinations. Is it okay to declare* if I’m playing front or back when I play 9 on this course? I’m figuring I need to declare before I play a shot. *meaning just say to myself that this is the back 9. Curious what people think. Of course, my only holes left are 13 and 17, so I’m going to declare the back 9 for the rest of the year. Probably only one or two more rounds though.
    • This is my opinion as well. I would love to see the LPGA take the lead on this.    This.
    • I agree in general. The one way in which the viewer will notice the pace of play is just that "it's been an hour and Nelly Korda or Scottie Scheffler have only played four holes." Or if for some reason they show a lot of shots of players just standing around when they could be showing golf shots. But I think Andy Johnson said it most recently/best, playing fast is a skill, too. I would love for pro golfers to play faster. You'd see the players you want to see hit more shots in the same time than they do now. So I don't disagree with the pace of play stuff, and hope they can find ways to do it. Heck, the LPGA should leap at the chance to differentiate itself in this way, IMO. So: I stand by what I said in that the TV viewer really doesn't notice much about pace of play. It's rare when they do. I support increasing the pace of play wholeheartedly. But my top five reasons don't include TV ratings or viewership.
