Where is the beer girl??

Haha I played on Labor Day. Was 90 plus degrees for a 1pm tee time! 8th hole I was on my 4th beer and felt like I was gonna keel over from the heat and booze combo. 3 putted 8 and yanked a drive on the driveable 9th way left! I love to have a couple on the course but that was one day beer was not a good idea!

I warm up with a small bucket (40 balls).  Half of those I will pitch or chip.  If pressed for time, due to worse than expected traffic, I play the first few holes with more club and less back swing.

In der bag:
Cleveland Hi-Bore driver, Maltby 5 wood, Maltby hybrid, Maltby irons and wedges (23 to 50) Vokey 59/07, Cleveland Niblick (LH-42), and a Maltby mallet putter.                                                                                                                                                 "When the going gets tough...it's tough to get going."

On days like that beer is great. In the clubhouse on the 19th hole.

Sweated my golf balls off that same day, but waited on the beer. That was a very nice first beer of the day.

I like to be at the course about a half hour early.  I stretch a bit, hit a few balls.  My normal cycle is short iron for 5 to 10 shots, longer iron for 5 to 10, driver for 6, long iron for 3 or 4, short iron for 3 or 4.  I'm doing two things, stretching my muscles, and reminding myself of one or key feels or movements. Then a few putts, some longer ones to gauge speed, a few short ones to reinforce a good on-line stroke.  For significant competitions I'll do a little more, mostly short game and putting work.

Yes... same here.  Was playing with my son and I was glad to be drinking as the yo-yo's in front of us were the macho idiots hitting from the blues that cant hit past the red tees.  They were horrible. 3-5 shots to be where my drive was.  They must have easily shot over 100.  I paced myself as we were always waiting.  I had a few beers and a nice cigar and my son and I had some good conversations.  I opened with 3 pars, finished par, birdie, par and  made sure they saw my drives and irons and loudly exclaimed I'm hitting from the WHITES!

Sadly we left after 9 as that took 3 1/2 hrs and we were not gonna sit out there for another 3-4 hrs.

I just stretch and take a bunch of practice swings when waiting to tee off and there's a lot of time to stretch so I'll be stretching and looking at the smartphone at the same time. Going straight from car to tee, probably not a good thing that I don't stretch though.

The only time I'll hit balls beforehand is when playing with others or screw up tee time and have to wait longer.

If I have the time, here is my routine:

Chip with 3 wedges, all putter to 9'oclock swings, starting with the easiest first.

Half swings, working up through the bag.

Full swings with 60, 7, 5 iron, driver

Putt, starting with 2 footers, then 3 footers, then 4 footers, followed by some long lags to get speed control, without aiming at a hole.  Strictly distance control.

The idea is to get myself used to success with the short putts and short chips.

This whole routine is only about 20 minutes.

That was a frustrating day. I missed short pars for up and downs at 1/6 and 3 putted 8 for bogey. Made birdie at 2. Was +2 on front. Couple short ones fall and I’m -1 or even. The heat just demolished me on the back side tho. 11-13 I went double, bogey, triple with 2 penalty strokes. Rest of the day was all about surviving.... literally! I drove through the sprinkler at 17 haha! Limped in with a 46. 4 of those penalty strokes.

Arrive at the club 1 hour before my tee time. 25 minutes to get ready: shoes, golf cart, go to the bathdroom and pay for the tournament.

Warm-up: 25 minutes
5 minutes chipping/pitching
5 minutes sand shots
5 minutes long putts
5 minutes short putts
5 minutes stretching with my driver ending in full swings without a ball.

10 minutes before tee-time i go for the 1st tee.

The best of this routine is than i never get nervous from been late. The worst it can happen is that i tee it up on the first tee without warm up (never happened).

That’s frustrating! It’s bad enough when you can’t get by people. Even more so when they are clearly playing the wrong tees! I left after 8 a couple weeks ago after riding the heels of a pair walking (I was riding and a single) that refused to let me by. I’m pounding drives within 100 yards of the green on the last 3 par 4’s and I hit the green as they were walking off the 6th which is a 3. When it was 90+ and the jokers in front just don’t have a clue it isn’t worth it. Especially since I have a membership and only had to raincheck a few bucks on the cart.

Some time I get warm up time, often I do not.  No matter what, I do have a 5 minute stretch routine I never leave out.  It focuses on hip rotation, loosening up the arms and the legs.  Then, even if I only get a few practice swings in, I am physically ready to play.  My first drive may not be optimal but by the time I finish the first hole, I am fully ready to play with no excuses.

Well, the pros go through a rather lengthly, systematic warmup before playing a round. I don’t believe they would be doing that if it wasn’t important. On the other hand, a thorough warmup does not seem to guarantee that they will score well on the course that day.

As for me, I find that hitting balls on the range before playing has no more correlation with my scoring than skipping it. I actually tested this back in May.

One thing that I must do before playing, however, is warm up my body on a rowing machine followed by a bit of targeted stretching. Skip this step and I will hit some ugly shots on the first three holes.

It amazes me that pros hit th amount of shots that they do before a round. If I hit that many I’m done before I make the turn. I guess that is what separates them from players like us. They are conditioned to repeat their swing over and over and over.

Much like you I do find myself hitting some really ugly golf shots if I don’t do something to get loose before I play!

    • Of course there's not a simple or knowable answer here. But the whole Caitlin Clark phenomenon is a nice example IMO. Suddenly there was wall to wall media coverage and national attention and... the women's tournament got similar ratings to the men's and much higher ratings than the men in the final four. With every indication that there will be some portion of the uptick that remains going forward. And there's the whole element that Sue Bird brought up. That basketball needed a pretty enough white superstar guard. One who looks like the "cute little white girls" that describes most of the soccer USWNT that's been able to achieve much higher popularity than any version of women's basketball, which is dominated by black players and none of any race who could be described as little... I do think women's sports are in a good place to start taking off more though. It's really only in the coming 5-10 years that the majority of girls will start to come of age with post Title IX grandmothers (as in their grandmothers were allowed to be serious athletes). I don't follow men's or women's basketball much, but in golf for sure the women's tour has gotten much deeper over the past 20 years and only looks to keep going in that direction. I've heard the same about women's basketball. And the patriarchal attitudes that socialized girls out of sports and everyone out of women's sports fandom aren't gone but have def diminished.

    • I have nothing to add other than I freaking love her swing and I think she's hot as hell and some of my golfing buddies disagree so I fought them
    • I’m not sure I agree. It’s just what the majority find more entertaining. Most people prefer women’s gymnastics over men in the Olympics. How much hype is there with the men’s compared to the women’s? I bet you can rattle off several big names in women’s gymnastics and only a handful of men. Women’s tennis …same thing. And sure enough, their purses are the same. However, WNBA, awful…LPGA, not near as much interest than PGA. Don’t think it’s really that complicated IMO.
