I have been trying to teach my Autistic son the game but he is left handed and yes I did try to switch him to right handed  but he struggled.  So I have been trying to learn how to hit ball left handed to get his perspective. I have at least learned to hit a 7 iron 120 yards fairly straight.  Anyone else tried to learn opposite swing.

Supposedly, Phil Michelson is a righty and swings lefty because he was standing across from his dad, imitating his swing.

I've never tried, but the super speed training is making my lefty swing much better..lol. I actually have a 3 year old girl that seems to be lefty but I am going to make an attempt at teaching her right handed. My step son is a lefty, so I swing his clubs from time to time. It's not too pretty...haha

I tried several months, maybe a year or so (?) ago to switch to a left hand swing. This for physical/medical reasons.

I sought out the tuition of our local pga pro.

The advice he gave me was to start out with a reverse grip change. That being a right hand low grip. A right hander's grip, only swinging from the left side. Once I could swing the club from this grip position, then switch to a left handed grip. It seemed to be working .

His idea was to put extra pressure on the legs and upper body to get use to the reverse physical movements, faster. Once they were tuned in, then finalize the  process with the correct grip.

Unfortunately I gave up on the switch to being a lefty too soon, and went back to my natural, right handed swing.

So I can't really say if his idea would work,  or not. only that it seemed promising.

Just an idea.

Well that was suggested to me after dropping some decent coin with an instructor. I spent a few hours hitting right handed and pretty much felt so awkward I just laughed it off and let that idea go.

It can be done...the muscles just take some time to become coordinated. It took me about 6 months of focused effort to become competent. That being said I still putt right handed!! Not going through that hell ever again to learn how to develop putting touch and feel !!

I've been carrying a left-handed club for a few years.  Occasionally the ball comes to rest such that it is unplayable, for a right-hander, but perfectly fine for a left-hander.  After trying out a few different lengths and lofts I settled on an old, Cleveland, niblick.  Then I took it to the range.

I started out with one goal: to be able, reliably, to play a left-handed shot that was an improvement over a drop.  I'd hit ten left-handed, ten right-handed, etc...until the bucket was empty.  It was rather awkward, at first, but it didn't take all that long to become reasonably proficient.  One of the keys, for me, was to concentrate on specific targets and distances rather than trying to hit the ball as far as possible.  That allowed me to develop a feel for the top of the swing.  The club is good, now, for right at 100 yards...a lot better than a drop.

Putting is the easiest part of the game, it requires the smallest stroke, the least amount of practice, and so on.

I regularly beat people putting lefty with an old Callaway Tuttle putter we have lying about. My "touch" and "feel" are the same lefty as righty because… it's virtually the same stroke, back and through.

The muscles used to execute shots right and left handed are the same but their level of condition are not.  My muscles fire very aggressively left handed and not as much right handed so my touch is VERY different right and left handed and this translates to putting also.  I have to really calm my body down on short game shots left handed whereas right handed I feel like I really hit the shot and it comes off much softer.  Eye dominance and hand dominance also play a huge roll in the shots from different sides.  I am left hand dominant and so my left swing feels like a punch whereas my right swing feel like I'm throwing a Frisbee.  That probably explains most of why I play with 20 more mph lefty than I do righty.  It may be the same stroke in theory as it relates to ball flight laws and d plane, but how it is felt is not even close to the same.  You may putt well for the moment while it is novel but if you did it over time you would see that you are nowhere close to as good a putter lefty as you are righty I assure you.

So much garbage there it doesn’t warrant a response.

Perhaps the only thing of merit is the eye dominance thing, and that’s a small factor. Calming your body on putts? Okay dude.

I'm a lefty. When I first started, I was hitting balls at a range with an acquaintance who was a righty and he stood at the next stall.

I found his explanations easy to understand as I mimicked him. He didn't use words like right and left, just words like back swing, front foot, back foot. It eliminated the lefty righty thang.

I'm a visual guy so it was like being in a mirror.

Might not work for everybody especially if you are not a visual learner. Might be good for your son.

Cool! I wondered how he’s doing.

My son and I started off right handed then switched to lefty after a year and things couldn’t be better now 6 years later. 😊

    • Day 134 (26 Apr 24) - played Minnesott today, worked with the mid-irons and approaches (especially the 7i).  Scoring was a little higher, but I was focused on making the needed adjustments to the swing to achieve desired distances.
    • I honestly believe if they play longer tees by 300-400 yards, closer to or over 7,000 yards, more rough, tougher greens, women's golf will become much more gripping.  BTW, if it weren't for Scottie killing it right now, men's golf isn't exactly compelling.
    • Day 542, April 26, 2024 A lesson no-show, no-called (he had the wrong time even though the last text was confirming the time… 😛), so I used 45 minutes or so of that time to get some good work in.
    • Yeah, that. It stands out… because it's so rare. And interest in Caitlin Clark will likely result in a very small bump to the WNBA or something… and then it will go back down to very low viewership numbers. Like it's always had. A small portion, yep. It doesn't help that she lost, either. Girls often don't even want to watch women playing sports. My daughter golfs… I watch more LPGA Tour golf than she does, and it's not even close. I watch more LPGA Tour golf than PGA Tour golf, even. She watches very little of either. It's just the way it is. Yes, it's a bit of a vicious cycle, but… how do you break it? If you invest a ton of money into broadcasting an LPGA Tour event, the same coverage you'd spend on a men's event… you'll lose a ton of money. It'd take decades to build up the interest. Even with interest in the PGA Tour declining.
