Great accomplishment!

If Tiger's iron game is on and his back is healthy he has as good a chance as anyone at Pebble. Bethpage Black did favor the stronger, younger guns but Pebble brings much more of the field into contention. I would like to see Jordan pull out a win and get his game (and head) back in order.

I have been frustrated by an extremely slow group in front of me, but I have never been good enough to get bored at any time playing golf. I too get disappointed to see the round is almost over.

It is not difficult to apply for so I do it each years expecting rejection. i have been to a Wednesday practice and par 3 contest due to a friend winning the lottery.

I am starting to embrace the idea of moving up. I played yesterday from the whites and only had 1 par and had to scramble to shoot a 91. Now, I do not get any better than mid-80’s but it struck me how often my approach shot on par 4’s required a 2-4 hybrid to get the required distance and most times I am not on the green. Perhaps at age 67 it is time!

I play from the white tees and i have highlighted in bold the 520 yard par 5 that I have trouble reaching and the 435 yard par 4 that I just cannot reach. I have the ability to reach 16 of the 18 holes but being a 16 handicap of course I do not always reach and have a relatively low GIR, But if I put a couple of good swings (for me) I can reach most of the holes. I have also shown the gold senior tees which i have played but they did not make much of a difference in my score. That being said, I do get a lot of use out of my long hybrids on approach shots. On a good day I will have about 4-5 GIR from either tee. Challenging but fun. Listed below are the new "green tees" which I will eventually move up to. GREEN 485 290 265 135 310 335 120 315 415 2670 465 300 170 310 155 305 465 345 300 2815 5485

My current course has a 425 yard par 4 that I cannot reach in 2 but bogey is fine. One long par 5 I struggle with and a 195 yard par 3 across a hazard if you go right at it (I am talking about the white or middle tees). But the remaining par 4’s range from 310 to 390 yards which I have chance at reaching. I just accept that a few holes are good bogies for me. The gold tees are about 300 yards shorter and do not make a significant difference for my game except on the par 3’s.

I believe that a natural ability to swing the club is a major factor in someone becoming an exceptional golfer. In addition, starting to play golf at a young age is a great advantage since the young seem like sponges absorbing what they are told and then just doing it. I had my grandson on the golf course at 8 years old and with about 10 minutes of instruction he was able to make a good strike, He is a baseball player and only plays 5 or 6 rounds in the Summer, but he can pick the club up and just continue what he was doing last year - just hitting the ball father. My father was an avid golfer and tried to get me involved when I was young but back then baseball and football were he games to play as a kid. I took up golf at age 40 and although I only play about 25 - 30 rounds per season I have to practice often to have any type of decent swing. I do not believe that I could take more lessons and practice enough to be a single digit handicap.

I was glad to see Snead added to the choices and he received my vote. Snead had a tremendous number of wins even if it was against weaker competition by 2019 standards. He also had 11 wins in one season which is great for any era. I believe that Arnie had the largest impact on the popularity of the game of golf with the exception of Tiger and Jack but that is not what we are voting for. As for Phil, I enjoy watching his game and he is a top 10 golfer in my book, but IMO he had the misfortune to play during the Tiger era with the most talented golfer of all time. .

I will never be a single digit handicap but it is possible (but improbable) that I could break 80, so that is my big deal.

More Fun To Hit It Perfectly Or Score Well?
NJpatbee replied to PerfectStriking's topic in Golf Talk
Hitting it perfectly for me is hitting it as well as I am capable of which is more satisfying to me than a lower score. Keep in mind that an 84 is as low as I have ever gone but to stay in the 80's I have to hit most of shots well (for my level). I will take a well struck 86 over a scrambling 84. -
I am a 16 HCP and was never a great golfer but I do go to the range 1 or 2 times per week to work on mechanics. However, the best practice I get is by playing a couple of practice rounds solo. I take multiple shots and intentionally will drop on sloped fairways and deep rough or try hero shots. I lose quite a few balls but at my level I do not play expensive balls. Of course when it counts for my handicap there is a bit more pressure but if I have been on the golf course my confidence level is way up.

I hope he does and believe he will to some degree. He has a world of talent but his game is gone compared to where it once was. I wish him the best and hate to see such a young tour phenom having confidence issues.

Because it says in the Rules of Golf that if you break Snead’s win record and win 16 Majors you will have the greatest golf career of all time. It is just the threshold that I want to see before I consider Tiger’s career the greatest!! I have already said that Tiger had the most talent of all time but another major and a couple of additional tour wins would for me make his career the greatest in addition to being the most talented golfer of all time. And just to calm you down, I have not been appointed by the R&A and USGA to select the golfer with the greatest career of all time.
-
No, two wins and another major would IMO give Tiger the greatest career of all time - upping his longevity a bit. I have already agreed that Tiger is the most talented golfer of all time, but do believe that Jack has a slight edge on career greatness.
-
Majors, wins, longevity, total dominance for an extended period of time. Tiger had the most dominant 10 year period and is IMO the most talented golfer of all time, but his career still has a few more years to go. It is likely Tiger will break Snead's record for number of wins and if he gets another major he would then get my vote for greatest career.

Snead, Hogan, Palmer, Hagen, Sarazen, and Jones are all viable candidates for a variety of reasons.

I hit a "line drive" shot with most of my clubs and count on the ball rolling out quite a bit. A very wet course curtails my game enough to add 2-4 strokes to my score. Having just moved to the windy Jersey Shore last Fall I can manage with my lower ball flight but steady winds of 25mph+ will add a couple of strokes. I also have yet to figure out how the wind can be in my face on 14 of 18 holes!

Between Masters.com, The Golf Channel, and CBS I thought the coverage was the best it has been.

I chose Tiger not just because of his win at the 2019 Masters but for a period of about 10 years he was the most talented golfer there ever was. As of now Jack probably had the better overall career and had a world of talent also. Both of these golfers pulled off improbable Masters wins but for entirely different reasons. Jack's game was down in 1986 (for him) but he managed to summon up the magic for the Masters. Tiger's game was gone for quite a few years but after multiple surgeries he is back in the top 10 after winning the 2018 Tour Championship and 2019 Masters. I expect he will break Snead's record number of wins and likely win another major. But is it was the wonder years of 1997 - 2007 when Tiger earned the title of greatest golfer of all time while Jack still has the greatest career of all time.

I just started playing again this season and it will be my first year playing and living at the "windy" Jersey Shore. I played my first legitimate round on Wednesday and was paired with a pleasant golfer who asked if I planned on leaving the pin in. Based on what I have read here and other writings I decided I would leave the pin in. On the back nine I had a short par putt (not normal for me!) and left the pin in on about a 30 inch putt. The ball was heading ring for the hole and instead of falling in it hit the pin and went sideways about 6 inches. I looked at the hole and from the direction I putted the ball would not fit in the hole because the pin had been moved by the wind. It was not howling at the time but a previous gust of wind had caused the the pin to lean. I appreciate all the work done on the study described in this thread but in the future I will check the pin carefully and pull it if it is leaning towards the direction I am putting from.

Not that I lose sleep over it but Kuchar's stiffing of his caddie in Mexico and then standing by it until he felt the heat changed my view of him from "All American Boy" to the "Ugly American". He did pony up $50,000 to the caddie and apologized after being skewered but his original "be thankful you poor Mexican for the $5,000" defense was a loud statement about his values and does make him the villain of the day for me.

I played a solo round last Saturday. As a practice round with no one near me I took multiple shots on most holes and hit some good shots and some terrible ones. I managed to clear out most of the loose golf balls in my bag but enjoyed myself. I did go to the range twice this week after declaring myself not ready for prime time yet and my swing is coming back (for my 16 handicap).

220 from the white tees which used to be 4 wood 20 years ago. Today at 67 I would be short with my driver. What is amazing is that the course was built in 1929 and has at least 6 par 4’s well over 400 yards, a monster par 5, and the par 3 mentioned above. Try that with hickory shafts!
