How often are you able to sneak away from the office for a day or get out a little early for golf? Two bosses ago for me we did it all the time. My boss would have me schedule a golf morning or afternoon once every few months. Other times I would have all of my work done and could break away for nine or 18 holes.

My current boss isn't into golf. Actually, to quote him, he said "golf is for people who are allergic to adrenaline." I knew I was in trouble when he said that. I had the opportunity to play in an awesome Pro-Am for free and he wouldn't let me go. There was also a scramble tournament put on by one of the organizations we work with and he wanted to wait until the afternoon the day prior before deciding whether or not he would let me go. That was obviously too late to join.

I'm thinking I may have to get creative to get a day here or there to sneak off.

A few years back I could get away with 9 or 18 holes at least once every couple of weeks, then I changed companys and omg was that a mistake up untill May this year I was lucky to get to play at weekends never mind during the week. Since May I joined a new company and couldnt beleive my ears when my boss said " do what you want just go play golf if you want to, as long as the job gets done I dont care".

I have always been a high handicapper due to just playing now and again but have pulled it down to 16 and its still dropping after a club comp at the weekend.

Only thing now is I feel guilty when I go play :)

The schoolteacher was taking her first golfing lesson. "Is the word spelt p-u-t or p-u-t-t?" she asked the instructor. "P-u-t-t is correct," he replied. "Put means to place a thing where you want it. Putt means merely a vain attempt to do the same thing."

Isn't that what vacation and personal days are for?

LOL you guys are too funny! I would give anything to work for a company that let me just go out and shoot 18 holes during working hours. I never get to do that, and I work for the government lol!

I also work for the government and I'm guessing you don't have flex time? I get tons of golf in during the work week I just have to go in early and then I'm out at 3pm. I do have disagree with the people who said isn't that why you have vacation and personal days. A lot of companies are cheap with their days off anymore. I have a buddy who had to work a full year at his job before he got any days off so sometimes you need to get away from work. I'm not saying it's ok to sneak out early anytime you want but if time/work allows for it why not?

If you put a full day in but start early then I don't consider it sneaking out. To me the term sneaking out means you're cheating the company. If you have flex-time or are a salaried employee then I also wouldn't consider it sneaking.

every single day...

yep...same here. I get out about once every other week during the summer to play. To make myself feel a little less guilty I usually go early in the morning and then get in around 11:30am or leave in the afternoon and only miss a couple of hours. btw - going to play tomorrow afternoon, before fall/winter settles in on us here in the NW.

I sneak out on my lunch breaks every now and then to get a philly cheese steak at my favorite course and to play a round on the 9 hole Par 3 course. Only takes me about 40 min to get around those 9. I usually make it back within my hour for lunch. But if I go over no one gives me shit about it. My hours are somewhat flexible. I've played 9 holes in the morning before going to work, too. I would do it nearly every day but unfortunately I work with my girlfriend and we usually take lunch together, heh.

I'm a consultant and it's quite common to work non-standard hours. If I'm not on the road (about half the time) I can play about 2-3 times a week. I always bring my clubs with me on the road but, so far, never have had time to play.

We have flexibility at my company (software development company) regarding work schedules. No official clocking in or out, we're expected to be responsible. So I wouldn't blow off a half day of work to go golf, but if I worked an hour late the previous day I might leave an hour or two early some other day to catch a twilight rate. Occasionally I'm lucky and there's a day everyone gets to go home early.

So, no, not really, I don't get to sneak out and golf. Leaving early and making it up some other time is as good as it gets.

I can usually leave a little early to get a full round in during the summer months, 9 holes during the winter. Both the company owners are golfers and understand when I want to leave early as long as there isn't anything pressing. Extremely rare to work a Saturday. Today I'm taking the afternoon off as vacation for a 2pm tee time, did the same last week.

I also work for myself and belong to a club 10 minutes away. It's empty during the week, so I go out solo and play 9 during lunch as often as I possibly can, 3-4 times a week. I'll eat a sandwich between shots. I can usually get around in an hour and a half, often faster. Once in a while I'll stretch it to 18.

The downside is that I am getting really good at my home front nine, and it's starting to affect my handicap!

I rarely play on weekends so I can spend time with the family. I can't wait for my two boys to be old enough to get out there with me, because then going on weekends would not only be allowed, but encouraged.

Fortunately, most managers in my office including my boss is really into golf. We're all hackers but just LOVE the game.
We try to squeeze in a 9 hole on Fridays after work. Usually leave the office around 5:20 ish to tee off around 5:40

I have been working from my home since 1994. My bosses have been miles away mostly and the last two years four states away. I certainly have responsibilities that must be attended to if I want to keep my job but when I have time I go play. Mornings or afternoons doesn't matter. If I keep playing at my current rate I may have to change some things in my life to be able to afford to join the CC where I live. I just have too many things going on with motorcycling, offshore fishing and family camping to be able to afford it now. I live here http://www.stpetecountryclub.com/
But I only play local Munis.

It ain't bragging if you can do it.

    • Last year I made an excel that can easily measure with my own SG data the average score for each club of the tee. Even the difference in score if you aim more left or right with the same club. I like it because it can be tweaked to account for different kind of rough, trees, hazards, greens etc.     As an example, On Par 5's that you have fescue on both sides were you can count them as a water hazard (penalty or punch out sideways), unless 3 wood or hybrid lands in a wider area between the fescue you should always hit driver. With a shorter club you are going to hit a couple less balls in the fescue than driver but you are not going to offset the fact that 100% of the shots are going to be played 30 or more yards longer. Here is a 560 par 5. Driver distance 280 yards total, 3 wood 250, hybrid 220. Distance between fescue is 30 yards (pretty tight). Dispersion for Driver is 62 yards. 56 for 3 wood and 49 for hybrid. Aiming of course at the middle of the fairway (20 yards wide) with driver you are going to hit 34% of balls on the fescue (17% left/17% right). 48% to the fairway and the rest to the rough.  The average score is going to be around 5.14. Looking at the result with 3 wood and hybrid you are going to hit less balls in the fescue but because of having longer 2nd shots you are going to score slightly worst. 5.17 and 5.25 respectively.    Things changes when the fescue is taller and you are probably going to loose the ball so changing the penalty of hitting there playing a 3 wood or hybrid gives a better score in the hole.  Off course 30 yards between penalty hazards is way to small. You normally have 60 or more, in that cases the score is going to be more close to 5 and been the Driver the weapon of choice.  The point is to see that no matter how tight the hole is, depending on the hole sometimes Driver is the play and sometimes 6 irons is the play. Is easy to see that on easy holes, but holes like this:  you need to crunch the numbers to find the best strategy.
    • Very much so. I think the intimidation factor that a lot of people feel playing against someone who's actually very good is significant. I know that Winged Foot pride themselves on the strength of the club. I think they have something like 40-50 players who are plus something. Club championships there are pretty competitive. Can't imagine Oakmont isn't similar. The more I think about this, the more likely it seems that this club is legit. Winning also breeds confidence and I'm sure the other clubs when they play this one are expecting to lose - that can easily become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
    • Ah ok I misunderstood. But you did bring to light an oversight on my part.
    • I was agreeing with you/jumping off from there.
