I just hate it when a course requires you to use a cart for no reason, many of my favorite courses are very walkable but carts are required. A few weeks back i was playing and my buddy and i were in a cart, so by the 3rd hole i decided to unstrap and walk. By the 6th hole the ranger pulled up and told me to get back in the cart, I tried to explain to him that walking was faster than riding but he didnt belive me so i got back in.

I do realize that some courses are very hard to walk because of the distances between holes so i can see the reason for carts and i have no problem with this.

What i would like to see is a course that is walking only and carts are only availible for handicaped people and obesity is not a handicap. Or maybe some courses should have a walking only day and i bet that the average time for a completed round would decrease.

I golf with my dad alot and he is 63 years old and he loves walking, ( he walks about 4 rounds a week) and he also plays with a group of 8 seniors and they all walk. He calls me a bum when ever he finds out that i took a cart.

i totally agree that more courses should do walking only, or take some kind of measure like jacking the price of a cart way up to try to deter people from getting them. cases like my dad are about the only time i endorse using golf carts, because he's diabetic and his legs are pretty weak. he can still swing a club around (sorta...) but there would be no chance that he'd be able to walk even nine holes on his own.

There are many courses that require carts as a revenue thing. It amounts to an extra $10-15/person for them. It's too bad your favorite course is walkable and doesn't allow you to do so - I would avoid any course that had such a policy. In fact, there's a course near a good friend of mine's place that has such a policy, and that I avoid for just that reason.

If they're giving me the cart with my greens fee I'll gladly take it.

This is where the holes are sometimes a pretty hefty distance with very steep grades apart.

Waiting out the 2 feet of snow that just dropped on the course....

While my home course is very walker friendly, they do have one odd rule:

On weekends, only members and their guests can walk. Visitors MUST rent a cart and ride. I guess it's just a revenue thing, but at $600 a year for a membership to a decent course, I'm not complaining at all. I love the fact that on weekends, it's easy to spot the other members, and join up with them for a nice leisurely walk around the course.

I typically can walk a round faster than 90% who ride carts at my home course, because it's so walker friendly. There are great shortcuts available to those who walk, and it's much more of a social game when you're walking. Even with my back surgeries, I bought a Sun Mountain so that I could continue to walk the course.

It's a deal-breaker to me, unless I'm at a resort.

I do notice though, I tend to focus alot more walking.

Me too, I tend to be more "in tune" with the course when i walk. I score better when i walk i think because it keeps me loose throught the round.

Not sure if the speed of play for the average drunk group would go down. But then, the average drunk group probably wouldn't play if they couldn't ride. Yet another bonus of requiring walking.

My course now has a no walking before 1:00 rule and weekends. It sucks. I hate carts. I have played a total of four rounds of golf in my entire life with a cart. Played horribly all four times. I don't have time to think between shots, I am much less focused, and I have to look forward at the path driving helplessly while my forged blades are clanking around and getting chunked because the cart path undulates like a little mountain range. I can't get in 18 holes on weekdays due to daylight savings time and now even on weekends I have to sprint from shot to shot just to get in my round before sunset. I am of course exaggerating a bit but, ya know...carts suck

Same here.

The way to guarantee looking like a complete loser is to ride in a cart if you are physically able to walk.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

Most of the resort courses around here are carts only, but there are a few that will let you walk (no green fee reduction however). I don't know of any muni courses that don't let you walk. The semi private courses are a mixed bag, some will let you walk and other won't.

For me personally I do both depending on the state of my arthritis. I don't really see a difference in my play or time of play as a result of walking or riding (I just use more IBProfin when I walk). I do enjoy walking more than riding when I can but don't think it should be required, nor should carts be required.

Nearly all the courses around here make you ride... in fact thinking about it, the cart is included in the green fees... I really wish that there were more courses out here that allowed walking but it just isn't so... It's one of the things I miss about playing in high school.

I love to walk when I play golf. Did so for many years. If the course is tough terrain or weather is hot pull carts work great. A lot of courses around here require carts which is unfortunate (I assume the revenue is needed). Looking at joining the local CC now that my girls are grown and I have more time. I see lots of walkers there and the only time I played it I did walk. I feel that I play better when I walk and really enjoy the course instead of driving from shot to shot. One reason I loved playing in Ireland was because of the walking. Who would want to hurry an experience like that?

My home course requires it. It is very hilly and does have a few spots where there is long hikes between tees. It is a pace of play thing as the city also owns another course that does not require carts.

I usually end up carting at other courses too as my regular partner has a heart condition and has to ride. It is expensive for him if I don't chip in and ride too. But I do try to get out and walk on a lot of holes when I can.

i totally agree that more courses should do walking only, or

Why? Because you don't like them? There have been several threads about this and I say if you wanna walk, walk and if you wanna ride, ride.

my get up and go musta got up and went..
