disclaimer - if you are an old guy and these things dont apply to you, then continue your good work.  if you are a young guy and you do these things, even worse...

1) i know you dont hit it as far as you used to, but believe it or not, you still leave a ball mark on the green when you plop it on from 100 yards.  fix your damn ball mark!!  (BTW, this applies to everyone. if you dont fix your ball mark, you are a douche.)

2) the purpose of playing golf is not to finish the round with more balls than you started with.  put away your Ball-O-Matic 3000 ball retriever, stop ball-hunting, you didnt hit your ball in the water so why are you walking next to the pond scouring for balls?  i played with 2 old guys the other day and one of them had a sack hanging from his cart just for keeping all the extra balls he found.  argh!!!

3) DO NOT EVER take your ball out of the cup by sticking the head of your putter in the cup and digging it out.  are you freaking kidding me?  cant you see what youre doing to the lip of the cup??  GTFO...

agreed, I see everyone doing each of these.  At the course I work, I think only 20% of the golfers carry a ball mark repair tool, and only 50% of them know how to use it correctly.  Secondly, every golfer has at one point stopped to pick a ball out of the water or walked into the woods to get a ball that isn't theirs because it was reachable.  And for the last one, plenty of people do that, especially when they're too lazy.

i know people of all ages dont fix their ball marks.  thats why i explained why im singling out the old guys in this instance - because they dont hit it far and dont think they leave a mark.

i was not referring to people who happen to see a ball and stop and get it.  i am referring to morons who go out of their way, on every hazzard, and waste time, to find balls.  if your ball was in the middle of the fairway and you are instead walking by the woods hunting for balls, im talking to you.

i have NEVER seen anyone under the age of 60 get a ball out of the cup using the head of their putter.

I'm 22 and sometimes I venture out into the woods looking for balls.. I've found over 700 at a local course and will likely pay for several green fees with the balls that I've found. I just park my cart/push cart where no one can see it so they won't wait on me and if I do see them I wave them by. Is that still wrong?

I almost never repair anything on the first hole - mostly cause I forgot to put my divot tool/ ball marker in my pocket. 2-18 I am on top of it.

yeah, it is.  how do you know that others on the tee cant see you?  theyre waiting for you to come out of the woods and hit and youre in there dicking around.  youre assuming they cant see you, but you cant be sure.

you might not realize it, but letting groups play thru causes more of a backlog than just keeping up with the group ahead.  the starting and stopping is just not efficient and adds to slow play.

There are some courses that have Natural Life Observation areas or some variation of that, which means that any entry into water, fescue grass, or woods that is protected, is prohibited with fines associated with entry.  However, these rules are seldom followed.

I see you changed Stretch's  quote.  He said "Hey, Colon" not Hey, Colin and I suspect it wasn't an accident.

There are some general rules to live by on the golf course.

OK, here goes... C-Tech's Golf Rules:

1. If you look, walk and swing like Dorf, you should NOT be playing from the back tees. Either move up or go home, you look like an idiot.
2. If you hit your drive 180, do not wait for the green to clear except on par 3's, waiting makes you look like an idiot.
3. Do NOT line up your 4th putt, pick it up and go to the next tee, studying it makes you look like an idiot.
4. If you think you hit it OB, play a provisional. Coming back to the tee makes you look like an idiot.
5. If you hit the ball into my fairway while I am on the tee, stay out until I have teed off. If you stand in my fairway while I wait on the tee, you look like an idiot.
6. If you hit your drive in the water, do NOT hunt balls with a retriever, it slows play and makes you look like an idiot.
7. Do NOT drive your cart up onto the apron of the green, it makes you look like an idiot and I may shoot you.
8. If you started playing 2 months ago, do not bring your girlfriend and brother to the busiest course in the area to teach them the game on a Saturday morning. It makes you look like (you guessed it) an idiot. Good advice... don't come to the course, get a lesson for everyone and go to the range or an executive course so you can avoid looking like an idiot in the future.

I agree...lots of people do this, not just older guys. Also another thing that pisses me off...

I was playing a round the other day and sliced a drive in the right rough, almost on the other fairway. There was a 2-some of guys playing that hole next to mine. We drove over to my uncle's ball on the left of our fairway, so I had to wait before going over to my ball.

As I'm sitting in the cart, one of the guys playing the other hole next to ours, goes over to my ball (I could just barely see it), and keeps looking at the ball and then back at his buddy like he didn't know whether or not to play it. I didn't say anything because I thought he would see that it was not his and leave it.

Then I look away for a second, look back, and he's setting up over the ball..and you guessed it...he played it...hit it towards the green on the hole he was playing. I was like "WTF?". I had a ton of balls in my bag and before I could catch up to him he was leaving his green and going to the next hole, so I didn't chase him down for it. but he was an idiot. Unless he was playing the same ball as me (Nike 4 power+distance), then I don't know why he played it.

And he was a younger guy...in his late 20s or early 30s.

"Kindness is more important than wisdom and the recognition of this is the beginning of wisdom."

One more rule or truism to add if I may;

If your ball retriever is in need of a new grip you are definitely an idiot.

I have - many, many times.  I find that senior golfers are more likely to have a suction cup on the handle of the putter to pick the ball out of the cup to pick up the ball if they have trouble bending down that far.  It's the young golfers who are too lazy to bend over who are more likely to use the head of the putter.  They would be too embarrassed to use a suction cup - too big a hit on their egos.

By the way, I happen to be a 64 year old golfer with a knee about to be scoped for a torn meniscus on Monday, but I still bend over and remove my ball from the hole the old fashioned way.

I'm with you on that 4P. All the old guys in my club have the suction cup thing. I'm thinking about getting one myself. LOL.

    • Day 132: 5/7/24 Full Speed Spectrum Training session 8/24. 7th training program overall.    Another slow session but 4 mph faster than my last session, which was my slowest ever. Going to the doctor on Friday to check on pulled neck muscle.
    • Day 26: Did full swing practice after work. First 15 balls were working on top of the backswing feel, and then tried to incorporate transition feel into the next 15 balls. A's, although this will be my last season of being a fan as they leave for Las Vegas (by way of Sacramento for a few seasons). Hard to see myself rooting for the Giants, but if that's the only MLB in the Bay Area, I guess I might get on board.
    • My two cents? Don't. As a beginner that's interested in learning about the golf swing, you'll find yourself consuming a lot of information, most of which isn't even relevant to your own swing. You need to learn you can't think your way to a good golf swing. Focus on the one thing that you're working on and doing that on every swing, come what may. And remember, mishits happen.
    • Day 6 (7 May 24) - More work in the backyard focused on tempo in addition to setup.  Worked with 6 and 7 irons hitting hard foam balls - used the old MacGregor irons to mix it up a little.
    • No! lol. But they have to be in the right sequence to play mid-handicap golf or little better. Mostly. And even in that there is range/margin for error in the motions and positions that most normal humans can handle. It helps if you have a decent idea of how a golf club moves around the body like you would any other equipment sports (baseball and hockey might be the closest) After all, fairways are 40 yards wide. Don't overthink it. Be diligent in getting basics right. I will concede that it is harder than it sounds but it certainly is not exact angle/exact position/exact degree of bend/exact speed/exact facial expression, etc, every.... single.... time or the result is horrible death.
