OK, so it's a pretty tough 140 yd par 3 - green has tons of slope which makes it particularly brutal.    Usually make the green, but this time I knocked it stiff - 3 ft from the pin.       I was smelling birdie, so I didn't want it to be short ... slid it by on the low side & it kept rolling to about 3 ft back.    Missed that one too - gave it too much break on the up side.     Made the 1 ft tap in.    So, I have officially 3 putted from 3 feet - birdie to bogie.     Got in my head & f'd up the rest of the round - hate when I can't shake off such a bad result.

Anybody else ever 3 putted from 3 feet - need to know I'm not alone in my putting ineptness ...

Oh yea, its not that tough to do depending on pin locations.

Hole 15, 330 yard par 4, when the pin is in the back the hole slope back there is just bellow the critical level for slope and speed. Meaning, your above the hole, you better pray the hole gets in the way or your ball will end up nearly off the green. Unless your good at reallly hitting soft putts.

Imagine the slope running north to south through the hole. if you take 45 degree angles to either side of the straight uphill line. Anything outside this cone, your better be careful, because you miss high or low side with some speed you will have the exact same putt, or worse coming from the other side. I've seen people make that hole location look like a tennis match, back and forth, just missing the hole with to much speed. Usually i just try try to make the ball just fall in from the high side. It safer, and if i miss, i have a tap in. It probably decreased my chance of making the putt because i am finessing it, but i rather have a two putt than a 4-5 putt.

A trick i use for fast down hill putts, purposely toe the putt. It really takes a lot of the speed off the the ball.

Oh yeah it happens to everyone including the ones that you watch on sunday afternoons.... One time years ago in a big high school golf match i literally made nothing over 2 feet the entire day, worst round of my life.

A local course of mine has an 18th hole very reachable par 5 dogleg left.  I managed to put a 250 yard drive right along the left edge of the fairway exactly where it needed to be  I was able to bounce my second shot onto the back part of the green leaving me with about a 20 foot putt for eagle.  4 putts later - bogey

Last week on a short par 5 I was just off the right of the green in two. Took four more to get in the hole. Snatched a bogie from the jaws of birdie.

Not alone at all... When the pin is up front on #2 on my home course it's brutal. The green has a false front so it is very hard to get below that pin and it is very easy to give it just a little too much speed and watch the thing roll away and off the green.

I'm sure I've done it, but I can't remember. I'm very lucky that I don't really let bad shots bother me, and I have a short memory when it comes to poor holes. No matter how bad it gets, I'm playing golf.

Didn't Mickleson 3-putt an easy one earlier this year? On close putts he seems to just fire it in there so on the rare misses, it goes quite a ways beyond the hole.

I've personally witnessed a missed 9" putt for eagle, AND a 12" putt for eagle on consecutive weeks on the same hole by the same guy. both times it was a straight uphill tap-in. No gimme's for anything less than par so he had to putt them out. Left both of them short. Won't EVER let him live it down...

Years ago - playing a county municipal, one of the easier par 3.  145 yard par 3, you have to carry water, but it ends about 40 yards short of the hole (so its there just to give you the mental problem).  I hit my ball and it checks up to less than 2'.  My father (playing partner) hits a terrible tee shot that bounces off the cart path and leaves him probably 25 yards from the hole.  He chips it in for birdie, I miss the putt and hit the come back 4' for par.

I STILL don't hear the end of that hole and it was probably 4 years ago.

In my bag:

some golf clubs

a few golf balls

a bag of tee's some already broken the rest soon to be

a snickers wrapper (if you have seen me play, you would know you are not going anywhere for a while)

and an empty bottle of water

Couple years ago I stood on the 18th green with about a 15 foot putt for birdie and my first round under par (71 on a par 72).  I shot 74 that day.  But it is not like I think about it a lot years later.  ;)

I've done that exact same thing. Was playing a friend's home course, 18th was a par 5 slight dogleg right. Piped my drive to the middle of the fairway. Had 192 to the middle of the green (at that yardage, it's all I'm aiming for) and hit a great 5i which rolled to the back of the green, about 30 feet from the pin. 4 putted... That memory haunts every eagle putt I stand over now.

Oh yes!

Played a 3 day tourney in Italy as a 23 HCP. Hole 9 short par 3, topped my teeshot and second shot was as if I could golf like a pro. Only 3 ft to the hole for a nice up and down par from 120 yards. And a 21 Stableford points front nine (thats like a -3 for 9 holes compared to your HCP). Putt was a bit too long and the ball went on and on down slope. So I made a nice 6 tripple bogey instead of a par.
