Has anyone encountered this, what seems to be a rules violation, ritual in another?

This weekend, I went out as a single and got paired up with another single and a two some.  One of the guys in the twosome had habit of tamping down the grass behind his teed-up ball.  Every time on the tee box, he would place his ball on a tee, and then proceeded to tamp down the grass behind it.

I know if the ball is in play, that is against the rules, but I thought it was a rather strange ritual on a tee box.

We are talking about serious tamping down so that the grass now lies flat.

The only people who might be concerned are the ones who tee up after him?

I know someone who does this on every shot including in the bunker, obviously playing him for money is, interesting. . . :-D

I have never played on a tee box where the grass was tall enough, to even consider tapping it down. I don't know the rule on this but unless he is not using a tee and hitting off the ground. I don't see how it could benefit him?

I have also seen the opposite. Laura Davies used to take a sand wedge to the tee and chop up a chuck of turf to tee her ball on rather than using a wooden tee.

I prefer that when I am hitting a wedge offor the tee on a par 3. I'm not a fan of teeing up wedges, I tend to hit them poorly if I do.

You must not get around to all the fine dog tracks out there. :-D I played a course where the grass on the tee was so tall and soft I couldn't get a standard length tee at the height I prefer for hitting my driver. Wound up having to hit a bit down on the driver all day.

Funny thing is, it's a course that is well maintained - Fossil Trace in Golden, CO. The tee box was immaculate.

I have played my fair share of course's that needed some attention. Never one that grass was even close to the height I tee my ball and I don't even tee my ball as high as others I play with do.

I do it. Just depends, I feel like you can improve your lie slightly, so why not. I mean, there is a reason you're not allowed to do it in the fairway... So why not take advantage of it when you can, legally?

So what is the advantage if your driver never hits the ground behind the ball?

I've seen everybody from the best players in the world to 30 handicappers do this. It is just a habit that doesn't do anything to give a player an advantage. Grass on a tee box shouldn't interfere with a teed up ball.

Oh, I was talking about irons mostly. I rarely do it for my driver. Only if I'm teeing it really low or something would I do it with a driver... Even then rarely. But I definitely like to do it with irons, especially long irons.

I noticed Mark Crossfield doing this during his YouTube videos and have since incorporated it as a part of my teeing up routine....not sure it does anything in most cases....

However, the player incurs no penalty if the action occurs:

in grounding the club lightly when addressing the ball,

    • For such a nice membership, there have been some bad incidents in the past few years.  We had someone voted out a couple of years ago over something he did and he harassed the board members for three months until he moved out of the area.   Generally they’ve tried to do things like tournament handicaps and identify certain people who they know should be lower and adjust it somehow.  I can understand not wanting to go thru something like the guy who was voted out again i emailed the pro who forwarded it to the handicap committee.  They are going to see what can be done.  I walked someone thru what happened and they are going to nudge him to post the score from the match and see what he does.  Since he didn’t put anything in the electronic scoring past 13, based on how he played 14 and 15 plus having to take bogey on 16-18 for after he left, he should post 83.  We’ll see if it’s even higher,   Since he was really even thru 13, then doubled 14 and parred 15 my guess is he really shot 75 being generous and giving him 2 pars and a bogey on the three holes he didn’t play.    i shot 88, getting 16 shots for my course handicap which is net even and I lost on 13.  We do brackets where handicaps should be within 4-5 of each other.  Most matches only have 1-2 shots as a difference between players  neither of us posted the score yet.  There was something in the match play rules about whether or not to post your score.  I couldn’t remember if we were supposed to or not.  I don’t think he was going to post that, because even with his inflated score it would be the lowest score in his recent 20. Lucky I didn’t because they want to see what he does post and they don’t want me posting so he can try to calibrate his score.
