LIV Golf (Saudi PIF), "Mergers," and More

Butch H is being funny.

PGA Tour players do not need to thank LIV. Its not like LIV had set out to enrich the PGAT purses. They couldn't help it and are not definitely not cheering the increases. If anything they would rather PGAT treat it's players like shit.

It's like watching the Liberty tax guy jumping up and down on the sidewalk to attract customers who can't/won't do a simple 1040.

Even if we ignore the Saudi connection for a moment, I still don't see the attraction beyond what one would afford mildly glorified silly season golf.

Louder. Better. Faster. Shorter.

What the f%&# does that even mean?

I had to go back 10 seconds a bunch of times to see who was playing guitar with their driver. It was Bryson, and totally dumb.

Of all the Golfers to go to LIV, I am surprised by Bubba going.
From what little I have read, combined with News stories, I know he has his religion, he is pious and puts work toward charity.
I would have thought that the actions of the backers would not jive with the gospels he reads.
But I guess Jebus wants him to get money from people who have horrible human rights record. Or play at courses owned by someone who could be considered blasphemous and does not follow the teachings which Bubba holds so dear!

The word duplicitous comes to mind.

No surprise. They gave away tickets. And spent a shitload of money. Broadcast without commercials on YouTube. I don't even know where they would have had any revenue: a little bit of merchandise sales at events?

As a former big Bubba fan, this was highly surprising and disappointing to me. Shameful

How do you figure?

The middle class on the PGA Tour stand to make even more.

Did they not guarantee a salary floor? I thought that was part of the deal.

They give players $500k, but that comes out of their earnings, and it would have affected almost nobody. Literally a handful or something. Even the bottom players on the PGA Tour earn a good amount of prize money.

You didn't explain how the middle class on the PGA Tour is being squeezed. I don't think they are — look at how many of them are getting to play in the "Designated" event this week in Phoenix.

Why should sports have a guarantee? Golf is individual you earn on the course your worth. What you do with sponsor money is a different thing.

Welp, commitment is a two way street. If not, then on principle everyone should be a true freelancer and then they shouldn't (not saying they can't)  'ban' them for choosing alternative means of earning - LIV or elsewhere.

Tons of sports have guarantees. NHL contracts are fully guaranteed. Etc.

I can see the argument that if you qualified for the PGA Tour, you should get perhaps a "base" salary. What they're doing now where it's basically an advance against your future earnings is the least they could have done short of doing nothing at all.

Yes, although there is a subtle difference between a minimum guaranteed salary and a guaranteed contract. NHL, MLB, NBA players usually get guaranteed contracts so they will get the total amount they sign for regardless if they're cut/injured/etc. NFL players get a minimum guaranteed salary, but no guaranteed contracts (except for some lucky few). It's amazing to me that NFL players can't get enough leverage to demand guaranteed contracts, considering how short their careers are.

Will be interesting to see if in the future, LIV (or a future upstart leagues) might force the PGA Tour to start offering guaranteed contracts to those players that qualify in order to keep young talent on the PGA tour. Doubtful in the near future, but you never know.

I'll have to find it, but I read an article by one of these golf insiders who did some back testing on how the purses would be distributed and estimated that the golfers in the range of like 100-150 would actually earn less. Something like 60-100 about break even. Top 60 more. I'll see if I can find it but it was awhile ago and I do not remember who wrote the article or blog post at all.

Are the liv golfers now playing on the Asian tour in between the season starting? Asian Tour, Saudi tournaments, majors and Liv. Sounds like a lot of golf all over the world.

    • Day 34 - 2024-11-03 Ten minutes of work before Junior Elite this morning. Woke up "early" because of the time change.
    • Day 185 (03 Nov 24) - More work with the irons, well just the 6i, hitting into the net focused on setup and tempo.  Really more about the latter rather than former.  Slowed tempo to more of short punch swing, contact much improved.
    • I ended up playing Shingle Creek GC in Orlando bc what I found online said The Magnolia Course had some temporary greens and/or teeboxes.  It was just a month after Hurricane Milton, though Orlando was mostly spared. Shingle Creek was only 2.5 miles from our hotel, so very convenient.  The entire course was in great shape, and the staff was friendly.  I shot a ho-hum 82 from 6300 yds, mostly bc my putting currently sucks.  We didn't stay for lunch bc my wife and I had massages booked at the hotel and we were on a time crunch.
    • Well this has been a disaster of a summer, regarding playing. Played the least amount of golf in a summer since 2008. Yips on short game to partial wedges came in full hog. Full swing continued to be ok. Putting was the best part of my game. Handicap went from +2.5 to now 0.0. The number of rounds were low because I taught much more. Numbers are up over 50% from last year. A great thing but my own game was sacrificed and it annoys me a little. Short game really suffered from lack of play and practice.  I had rounds where I would lay sod over the ball, from the rough with a decent lie, looking at a simple chip from barely off green uphill to a pin. It would happen several times a round. I resorted to putting or using a 2iron to chip with. Obviously the less short game shots meant full swing was good. But, if it was off a little, I was screwed. My right wrist, elbow and knee all buckled and jerked right before impact. I couldn’t stop it. Tried everything I could think of. I went through a week occasionally that something would work, but never stuck. I remember not even having a club in hand. Just looking down at the ball and knowing I was in trouble.  A couple weeks ago, I watched a short game chef video on chipping and it has really helped turn my short game around. Yips aren’t completely gone, but very minimal now. Most of my issues now are distance control as the flight is slightly different. It was clear that I was too steep before. But I also realized I was decelerating quite a bit and trying to compress it for spin. Now, I’m much more neutral in setup. I’m really focusing in the very beginning of my take away and making my chest do everything there. If hands do anything to start, it will be a yip chunk or skull. I’m Trying to take shorter backswings and accelerate more through the ball without a feeling of “compressing” it. Allowing my draw biased motion to do its thing.  It’s resulting in much higher ball flights which means distance control up to 75yds will have to be reworked. The ball still has plenty of spin. I’m also able to use any club now to chip with versus feeling stuck with one.  My goal this off season is to try and break 60 from the forward tees at my home course. It will focus my game on tee shots and short game. Putting has become almost second nature and am not worried about it. Most of all, I need to figure out a better balance next year between work and play. Maintaining a high level of play is important to me (especially to my stress levels 😆).
    • He could… if he's playing pretty short tees. I mean, they might have to be 5200 yards or so, but he could.
