This really isn't much of a problem, but what the heck, I'll ask anyway. I just opened my new iron set. Nice and shiny! Cobra Speedzone.

I noticed, the "5" on the 5 iron looks unsettlingly close to the "S" on the sand wedge. With my other set, I have on occasion, whether it's the heat of the moment, or too many adult beverages, grabbed a 6 when I meant to grab my 9. That doesn't end well.

The first part of the fix is to put the two clubs in opposite ends of the bag, as you would expect given the shaft length. Then, you would imagine I'd notice that the club was not the correct length if I drew the wrong one out of the bag. But, understanding I'm a knucklehead, is there a good way to mark the sole of one of the clubs without making it look like I'm a knucklehead?

Just kicking that around, like I said, not much of an issue.

You should be able to easily tell the difference between a 5-iron and a sand wedge just by looking at them.  Especially at address...

That's a good idea. It's black right now. What kind of paint would stand up to the use?

I get the possibility of using a 9 instead of a 6.  Especially while enjoying an adult beverage.  But you'd have to be fall down drunk not to notice the difference between a 5 iron and a sand wedge.  It's like accidently putting with your driver...

Of course, but you'd think I'd be able to make the same determination 6 vs. 9. However, I have, more than once, managed to find a way to hit the wrong one.

You're probably right. I am likely overthinking this. I wouldn't be, if it wasn't 30F outside so I can't go play!

In agreement.  Our brains go mushy when we can't play golf.

I have an attorney friend (detail-oriented, right?) I play with who hits his 9 by accident on the same short par 4 hole thinking it's his 6.  And he doesn't even imbibe while on the course.  I always love his reaction... he sees and curses the lack of distance with the club before he realizes what club he hit.  Lucky for him he can reach the green with another 9 iron.

Maybe an engraver, you could write something like, "This is not a sand-wedge" or make your sand-wedge look like Bryson DeChambeau's.

"Head Covers" for those nice new shiny irons would be the ticket.

However, I keep my irons sorted in my bag.
Wedges up front, scoring irons on the left and long irons on the right.
Driver and other woods/hybrids at the rear of the bag.

I have accidently pulled the 6 on occasion when reaching across another bag on the cart.
Flushed it a mile over the green and laughed when I realized my mistake.

You can't be serious! Dudes with iron covers are dorks! I do agree with how you set your bag. If you have noticed, there is generally a high and low end to the top of the bag. The high end is for the longer clubs, the low end for the shorter.I also have my clubs put into the bag in numerical order, and I replace them in the same manner.

Good suggestion. I feel dumb admitting this, but I mix up my PW and GW often enough that this is probably a good idea for me. Both of these are from my iron set, so except for the lettering "P" and "G", the heads look nearly identical, especially at address, when it's too late to notice.

I had the paint fill on my Edel Wedges done in different colors with this in mind, and I never mix up my 54 and 60 (they do have different sole grinds though which helps).

Even worse when it's mushy to begin with !!!!!!!!

Went over to a friends house yesterday and played 18 on his projection screen simulator, even more frustrating than live golf.  We had fun !!!!!  LOL

    • The term I hear most often is "double teeing" which means the course/club has starting times from both the #1 and #10 tee.  I have encountered this many times and we know if we are the first group off #10, we may well get to #1 and have to wait because there are groups still with tee times yet to tee of #1.  In most instances, where the course/club has a starter, he normally explains this situation.  In this case, the pro advised what you would could/would encounter making the turn to #1.  And, that is exactly what happened.  Probably would have been wise to talk to the pro after playing back 9 and ask when you could go off #1 since apparently that club does not double tee.   Regardless, the outburst towards the other group was uncalled for.  And, I don't blame the member for being upset.  As a member of a private club, you are responsible for the actions of your guest.  I have played many times as a guest in the UK and I am pretty damn sure my host was responsible for my actions while at the club.  I know at the clubs I have belonged to here in the US, that is the way it is.  As a matter of fact, the member may find himself being brought before management and facing possible suspension.  So, I don't blame him for being upset.  However, as the host, he really should have stepped up and put a stop to the OP's actions.  OP makes this statement "I now understand that standards are different on the "private course." But I'll take those lessons to the muni, too."  No, the standards are not different.  You, sir, seem to be just a bit hard headed and belligerent, even if you are college professor...which possibly explains a lot.   JMHO
    • Day 32: worked for about 10 minutes on my drill. Filmed it as well for a check in. I think it’s slightly better but still seeing some issues.
    • Day 44 (26 Dec 25)  -  played in the Friday men’s shootout with a twist - used the Toney Penna persimmons and MacGregor blades - had a blast playing these clubs.  They really help in zoning in on making solid ball contact.  Scoring was solid - had several looks at birdie and had a few par saves.  Overall a day of focused course management.
    • Day 2: 2025.12.27 Eighteen holes at Kauri Cliffs. Focusing on trying to keep flex in right leg during backswing.
    • Day 136 12-26 Had a different practice planned today but life happened. Worked on "wide to wide" and still working on remaining flowy. Starting the club head in front of the ball as a drill, is helping with the flow of the swing.
