Hello all. Im currently gaming a set of ping G irons i hit the 7 iron 140-150. Im thinking about getting a new set (not because I need them) I will get fit for whatever I get. My question is with the ping G 710s in power spec can I expect them to be a club stronger say a 7 iron the same as my current 6 iron? My thinking is with the jacking of lofts the number at the bottom of the club doesn't matter what matters is how far you hit the ball. Am I on the right track or is there more nuances that I dont understand?

It’s not just jacking the lofts. New technology has changed the MOI, perimeter weighting, etc and in doing so change the dynamics ( launch angle for example) so they have to make a 7i with less loft to make it still act like a 7i as far as expected spin rate and ball flight ( height). But yes, knowing your distances with your clubs is the real focus without regard to the number in the club.

Thank you for the response. My issue is I believe I need the extra help in the top of the bag not necessary in the bottom where I have a much more reliable gap from 7-lob wedge. Right now I play with 5-9 then move to specialty wedges at 46° and those wedges are my most consistent clubs. I just don't want to screw up my 150 yard and in game trying to fix my 150 yard and out game.

My suggestion would be to bring your current set of irons with you during the fitting and hit old club versus new to see what the changed are, see if you really are getting what you want from the new irons. Just a thought.

Wish I was in the market for a new set of irons, I loved the shopping and experience of searching out new clubs. But I just bought my Clevelands so....

Make a conscious effort to be objective.  It is a lot easier to buy something you want than it is to get rid of something you do not.

In der bag:

It will be interesting to see what you find.  When I got my current set of irons, I demoed the G700 irons and liked them.  I went in for a fitting that included other brands as well as the G400 irons (same as yours now).  My distance was a little shorter with the G400s but dispersion was better, so that's what I went with.

Have fun!

What shaft are you playing in your G400 versus the others? Also what is face impact and why does it look like you’re hitting it off the toe with the first club?

I was playing the Ping Graphite shaft.  As far as face impact, I am not sure.  After hitting a few it was noticed that I was closing the club face a bit on the down swing.  I tried to correct that on subsequent swings..

This may be dumb. But have you considered just adding a hybrid or two?

When my game is at its best I play 4 - GW irons.
When my game gets a little shaky I actually pull the 4 iron and replace it with 2 hybrids. (19 degree and a 22.5 degree)

Just a thought.

Good luck.

My bag is an ever-changing combination of clubs.

A mix I am forever tinkering with.

I currently play with a 4 hybrid (tour edge platinum) but I have a hard time getting it in the air off the deck the only reason its still in the bag is because it works great off a tee and at my home course there are a couple tricky little par 4s and a par 3 I use it off the tee box. That is probably more of a practice problem more then a fitting problem. Ive come to the conclusion that when I go for a fitting (be later in the season I want to be hitting the ball in mid-season form) Im gonna take my whole bag and whatever the ° of loft the club they have me hit Ill compare the club I currently play that matches closest regardless of the number on the bottom of the club. I understand the concept of lower center of gravity making the ball launch higher. I just dont want a situation where I have a half club gap going into the wedges I currently play. If that makes scenes. But you are correct I need to figure out the top of my bag now that I have the bottom set (for now lol)

I had given up on my hybrids. Then my pro, David Ogrin, showed me how to use them.  I believe he has a video on this. Not sure of the exact web location.  But it's one of the videos at Golf Channel Academy.

    • Day 3 (August 13).  4' putting drill;  this is a modified version of the drill from LSW for short putting.   For context, in 2025, my strokes lost putting is more than 2 per round compared to the 15 handicap baseline, just on putts under 10'.  So that's a glaring weakness I think.  Anyway, so I set up 12 markers around a hole like a clockface, all coins, all face up.  I putt from each in turn, if I make it, I flip a heads over (or pick up if it's tails).  This means I have to make 24 putts eventually, ideally quickly.  It took me 38 attempts to do this, although 9 of the 12 coins were picked up either in the first or second go around.   Anyway, the baseline for a "90-golfer" (per Broadie description) is 37 attempts, so that's pretty good, but I'll keep trying to improve.  For anyone thinking about this, the number would be 30 for an average scratch player.   This was done on a real green at a nearby course's practice area.
    • Day 18: a little under the weather, so just some mirror work while watching TV.
    • That's not the right way to look at it, because you're not going to have a rating of 55 or something for even a 6500-yard par 72. There's a minimum rating (depending on the length), and then +s and -s to that. If a course has a bunch of +s and -s that even out, that doesn't mean the course rating is 100% the length. And what kind of math would it be if the course rating was lower than the formula: 103% length? 🙂
