General COVID-19 Topic

Some observations on this:

• Restaurants have been very lax on their cleaning between visits. Perhaps they need another shutdown to remind them how important this is.
• Most stores will not let you in without a mask, and most people have been wearing masks anyway. I'm not sure why he is hardening the requirement on retail businesses when this does not seem to be a problem anyway. Perhaps it is in other areas. ???
• 99% of people do not wear masks correctly.
• When OSU started playing a few weeks back, the number of gatherings went up. These gatherings usually include much yelling and high-fiving. I know that the Bengals started playing before that, but there is hardly anything to cheer about there. There were also a lot of Halloween gatherings a few weeks back.
• Since it turned colder, people are gathering more inside instead of outside. Seems natural that it would start spreading.

You too. Hopefully we can all be vaccinated / safe by next spring. I may need knee surgery over the winter, but that is another story.

I don't think the "cleaning" does much. If its aerosolized, wiping down the plastic seat cushion isn't doing squat (outside of normal cleanliness) to battle COVID-19.

I liken the super cleaning to the security theater at airports.

Not that big of a deal. The virus primary spreads through the air. I don't even wash my hands as often as I did and I don't wipe down stuff anymore.

You might get that at Giant Eagle or a Kroger, but you might not get that at a restaurant or some other small businesses. 

He has to make it universal because it deters lawsuits. Ohio lost a lawsuit to gym owners who said it was unfair to close gyms and not other businesses.

I don't see this at all. I maybe see 5-10% of people have their nose uncovered. Most people wear there masks correctly.

I agree that the seats are not an issue. I am referring to the table top itself. It's been like that for months, so I doubt that it is much of a contributing factor. I just prefer to eat on a table that doesn't have food residue from previous customers let alone their germs.

I don't know where you eat at, but I can not remember the last time I had to eat at a dirty table. If they were slow in cleaning it, it is really easy to get someone to wipe it down.

It might spread through the air, but gravity will make them land on the surface in front of you. That would be the table. Also see previous reply on eating at a clean table.

I see mask wearing pretty much everywhere. By not wearing correctly, I am referring to constant touching / adjusting.

This seems to be common in many chain restaurants. I have been primarily going to mom and pop shops where I know they clean the tables well.

And the touching/adjusting isn't really what I call "wearing it incorrectly."

If it's aerosolized, like most things say now, aerosols don't really fall onto surfaces. They float around… like smoke.

I'm a teacher here in Albany NY. We've shut down for one day so far. Waiting for the plug to get pulled, I don't think it's avoidable with the numbers now

More often than not, I think it just spreads things around on that surface.

I think the sharp increase in cases is the result of many factors.  A vaccine will eventually help, but until then I expect to see continued increases.

1) As weather cools more events are in-doors which tends to increase risk of spread.  This may not explain increases in warmer states but in cooler regions I suspect it does.

2) People are not a diligent as they were a few months ago,  @saevel25 commented he is not washing his hands as frequently, and I do not think he is alone and it is not just the handwashing people are getting lax about. I see more people in the stores with no masks now than 4 months ago.  Masks are not perfect, but the more people that wear them the more effective they are.  There are many that are choosing not to wear masks at all. I can't quote a percentage but I see more now than a few months ago.

3) Complacency:   A client of mine had her nephew come to do some work in her home and he "Does not believe in masks" but two days later he tested positive.  He told his Aunt not to worry, it is not a big deal and similar to a cold.  What he does not realize is his Aunt is age 77 with respiratory issues.  What is minor to him may be serious to her.  My fear is a Thanksgiving/Christmas approaches we have more family gatherings and they become super-spreader events when people of low risk mingle with people of higher risk.

4) Sheer number being tested.  6 months ago tests were scarce and use was limited but now test are widely available and many more people are being tested.  Who knows if we had been able to test as many people 6 months ago as now we may have seen the spike in cases then.

I'm not talking about six months ago, though. I'm talking about compared to August. September, even.

In Ohio (I'm sure other places too) they are publishing "Percentage of positive tests". Those numbers clearly seem to be way up. 2, 3 or even 4 times what they were a couple months ago.

Missouri is 42.7% positivity rate of people tested in the last 7 days.

That's.....insane. I can't even wrap my head around that....

 

Something that gave me a glimmer of positivity was seeing a note from the CDC the other day that says that masks protect the wearer more than they had initially thought.
