Compared to most of the weekend duffers I come in contact with, I find it impressive how many golfers don’t stink.

This of course is only USGA registered handicaps.  Less than 2% of men’s handicaps and less than 1% of women’s are scratch or better.  You folks are a rare breed.

Just another something I am below average at. 😏

My dog still loves me.

It's worth noting that the golfers who keep handicaps are GOOD golfers. I have plenty of friends I play with pretty regularly who shoot around 100 but DON'T keep a handicap. I'm an 18 which is clearly below average in that chart but other studies put the average male golf score at 97-98 which I beat 70-80 percent of the rounds I play so I still consider myself better than average. Now compared to people on The Sand Trap.....different story.

Driver: Callaway Mavrik 10*

Wood: Callaway Epic Flash 17*

Hybrid: Callaway Mavrik 20*

Irons: Callaway Rogue X 5i-GW

Wedges: Vokey SM8 54*S and 58*K

Putter: Ping Prime Tyne 4

Some of the golfers with the lowest handicaps that I have played with do not score that well. When you look them up on GHIN you see that out of their 20 rounds they have scores from up to 2 or 3 years ago. How can you be a good golfer and only post 6, 8, 10 scores per year?

My theory is that they have had a handful of really good scores over the years and then refuse to post any but their better scores moving forward. Thus they will always have that low index on GHIN.

Only thing I enjoy more than a vanity capper is a person who says they carry their drives 300 yards.

I can carry my driver over 300 yards. It is usually in the bag, but I can certainly carry it around the course if I want to. What’s it weight, 2 pounds?😜

I don’t get why anyone would try to overstate their handicap. Do they hate money?  I obsess over lowering mine but I hate when I improve and get less strokes against my buddies.

I can't speak for anyone else, and I don't carry an official HC, but psychologically I think we want to appear, whether or ourselves or others, at least proficient or dare I say it, "good" at something we have a passion for so a lower HC demonstrates we're getting better at something that, relatively speaking, we find important.

Oh yeah, I totally get it. That’s what leads to my gambling conundrum. I want a lower HCP, but I also like getting the extra strokes 🤣

I’m going backwards right now and it sucks because I’m playing worse than my handicap so I’m getting crushed. When I turn it around I will be able to pay for all those lost balls.

This is assuming people are honest about their scores and entered them accordingly.

I know a guy who was likely a legit 6 or 7 whose handicap stayed at just over I think it was roughly a 13 or 14 for something like four years. It was completely illegitimate...and completely legit. He was a 13 or 14, started taking lessons. He also, at the same time, started playing nothing but scrambles, shambles, best balls...so everything he played was in a tournament but non-standard format. So he might post one or even no scores a year because he was not playing legal posting rounds.

Side note, when we would do our group retreats...we did not give him any 14 hcp. (There may have been some betting involved, I can neither confirm nor deny, and the guy responsible for setting the teams and caps put him at I think a 7 or 8).

There came a time when he was able to get a really good deal on a membership at a club. He started playing in their league and...shocker...within a few months his cap started fluctuating between 6 and 8.

So while his 13 or 14 was a legit handicap...and his staying there after he got better was legit...he knew it was a loophole and a scam. We all knew. Weird that he and his partners did so well in the tournaments and these days...only win sometimes instead of all the time.

Just keep climbing. After breaking ankle this year I feel fortunate I can swing a club at all.

There's a million or two who don't even bother with a HCP..

    • Really interesting you say that. As my swing has improved I'm starting to struggle with pulling left. It looks like a "draw", but it has more to do with face than path, as I'm pretty close to neutral to slightly out to in most of the time. I've also moved the ball considerably further forward in my stance than I used to, so it makes sense the face would be further shut at impact than before.  Now I think of it, I've been compensating by aiming by an uncomfortable amount to my right, which causes my brain to panic on the downswing. I might try opening face at address and get used to that.
    • Day 13 (13 May 25) - Nice break in the rain just after mid-day, so got outside to continue the trail hand drill - moved up to 7i but still with hard foam balls.  Starting to see a smoother transition into the downswing and more consistent ball first contact.   Kept the swings to about 3/4 speed as I work on this small adjustment in the swing.
    • Day 6: Worked on my putting stroke by hitting putts using only my right hand.
    • I've got pretty big hands but I've also felt the challenge of ensuring the grip is in the fingers resulting in a not on purpose stronger grip. I've been making some swing changes that was resulting in the natural feeling at impact being a closed face. My grip has always been fairly strong. Not trying to sound like an asshole or anything, but the answer for me at least was just to start taking the grip from a weaker starting point! I have a pretty ingrained hand and wrist setup when I take my grip. I just started turning the club to have an open face when I start my getting the grip in the pinky routine. Has been working nicely. Lets me have the grip in my fingers and achieve a more neutral grip.
    • @dennyjonesand I are planning to stay in the Poland, OH area Friday night.  If any want to get together for dinner and/or drinks let us know. We are not sure exactly where we will stay or what time we will get there but if we can hook up with any of you it would be fun.
