DeChambeau Shoots a 58 at Greenbrier

Recommended Posts

"Lowest round in LIV history" the article states. LIV has a very long history, you think someone would have shot a 58 by now.

Bryson DeChambeau on Sunday shot a 58 to help win LIV-Greenbrier — his first victory on the series. He's also the first LIV Golfer to shoot a sub-60.

It's always impressive to shoot anything in the 50's (A bunch of guys in my golf league do it every week... of course that's for 9 holes.)

The one thing I could glean from the article is what was par? 72? .... 71? ... 70?

I don't think the title of this post is accurate.

I saw plenty of social media posts about it all afternoon and into the evening. Saw the video of him making the putt on 18, his celebration, interview, etc.

What makes you claim that no one cares?

Personally I think it's super impressive the fact that he shot it with a bogey and no eagles either.

This is kind of like hitting for the cycle in little league.
You respect the effort, but in the context of history,  does it really matter?

I strongly disagree that someone shooting a 58 in a legitimate 18 hole tournament played on a former PGA tour course is comparable to someone hitting for the cycle in little league.

Those two things aren't even in the same realm of comparison.

What am I missing here? Wasn’t LIV established a year ago? That’s not “very long”.

Even if they had a long history, 58 is very rare. Furyk is the only player ever to have done it on the PGA Tour, which is closing in on 100 years? I don’t know if they would count it from 1929, but it’s still way longer than LIV.

Quote

Prior to DeChambeau, just six players have shot 58 on a notable professional tour. Jim Furyk is the only to do so on the PGA Tour, firing 58 at the 2016 Travelers. The most recent is Alex Del Rey’s on the Challenge Tour in 2021.

So I happened to be flipping around and caught this when he was on the 16th hole when he birdied and was put on "59" watch. He got up and down on the par 5 17th for birdie and finished on the par 3 and made a very impressive 40 foot putt for 58. I have to admit, I jumped out of my seat and said "No Freakin Way"! I will also admit, that is the most LIV I have watched ever.

When asked if he should make the Ryder Cup team via a call from Zach, he stated his recent play and then basically said if he gets the call he would play for his country in Rome and if not he would be rooting them on. I thought it was a great answer.

I have never been a BAD fan, but his interview after the 58 did soften me up. It was as classy as I have ever seen from him.

The thread title is a bit inaccurate.  BAD's 58 has been all over the innerwebz ever since he did it, yesterday.

And it didn't make just "LIV history," it made history.  Nobody's ever shot a 58 at Greenbrier.

I, for one, am happy to see him playing well again.  Here's hoping he can keep it up.

I changed the topic title because I, too, didn't think it was accurate.

Now, a 58 on a par-70 set up for easy scoring is somewhat less impressive than one shot on a tougher course… but it's also still a 58. Six away from a "perfect" round of golf on a par-70.

And the hole is still only 4.25" in diameter.

It's still impressive and it is a course record. I am no fan of LIV. I've made that abundantly clear from the get-go. But this is still impressive.

Is it the most impressive thing in the history of golf? .... Of course not. (We all know the most impressive round of golf in history is the four person scramble team of 10 handicappers who carded a 47.)

But Bryson has a right to be proud of the round and it should be mentioned with some of the other really great rounds in the history of professional golf.

What yardage was it playing at?  It's listed at 6,401, but surely they lengthened it out for a pro event?

Also, what was the average score and median score that day?

Seems like necessary context.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

Per Yahoo Sports the course played at 7,255 on Sunday.

I did the math and the scoring average on Sunday was 66.75 and the median was 67.

Where did you see 6401 @turtleback? That’s an LPGA Tour yardage (maybe not for a par 70).

It would be better to consider shots below course index, not par or gross number. A 58 on a 76.0 index course is a lot better than the same score in a 70.0 index course. Also you can adjust it with the playing conditions of the day like they do with the world handicap system.

Big supporter of bryson, but he scored an amazing number in easy course conditions (always comparing it with regular PGA tour conditions)

Any way you slice it, Bryson joins an elite club of sub 60 golfers. He joins at Greenbrier which also had 2 59s there in PGA tournaments.

I did a Google search on Greenbrier scorecard.  But I didn't look carefully enough and it was a different Greenbrier course.  Mea culpa.
