Apparently mud on the ball has been a perceived issue at Quail Hollow. Scottie Scheffler mentioned it in his post round. He and Xander hooked it in the water on one hole.

Reasonably dry by the afternoon/evening. Some players not seeing many or any mud balls. Maybe they should have hit their tee shots lower. 🙂

Also, for as much as this was supposed to be a bomber's paradise… Luke Donald is T3. He'll turn 48 this year.

Mickelson took four swings to get out of a green side bunker on 12. Yikes!

Don't you reduce the likelihood of a mudball by flighting your drive lower?  I thought that was the case, and if so that's a skill and it shouldn't be diminished by giving relief, IMO.  Learn to hit the Tiger stinger.

Maybe?

Though could still be uncontrollable to a certain degree.

Definitely have less likelihood because the ball is less likely to plug but it will definitely get some mud on it.  Even if you roll it along the ground there is some mud that will eventually stick to the ball.

Which brings up a simple question.  Is mud-balls enough to prevent what looks like a coronation 18 hole round for Scottie Scheffler.

It’s three shots. He could lose it in one hole. Unlikely, but possible.

I am all for a coronation.

At one point Scottie had a 5 stroke lead. He’s not playing well.

Proposition: Scottie Scheffler is just what golf never needed, a superstar and dominant player who has zero personality and is an utterly boring frat boy type. Brooks Koepka is a SMUG frat boy type, but at least you can hate him for that. Scottie is a glass of milk. Wholesome, but not much to get fired up about. Thank goodness for the arrest, at least that was a little exciting.

I don’t think Scottie gains many fans for the game of golf, because he doesn’t INSPIRE passion any more than he seems to FEEL it. I am sure that he actually does have an intense inner competitive fire, he obviously wouldn’t win so much without one, but it simply doesn’t project outwards. He needs to start messing up before we can like him.

Jordan and Rory and Justin and Keegan and others inspire passion in part because they make you suffer, they put you through the wringer. Bryson and Rahm have zip, they give great interviews. Koepka and Reed and Sergio are fun to trash and complain about. Admittedly Dustin Johnson is a little boring, but even he seems fun next to Scheffler. Scottie makes every single other male professional golfer look like Personality Plus. I suppose that is a benefit of a kind.

I am not saying this is all the Final Truth; it is a Proposition.

An analogous situation is Mike Trout in baseball. Trout is an epochal talent, but he is simply not that famous outside the game of baseball, and he has never captured the imagination of the general public; they don’t have his contours clear in their collective mind. Somehow he lacks vividness, depth of impression. Comparing Trout to Mickey Mantle or Willie Mays is exactly like comparing Scottie to Tiger or Phil.

Wow, Rahmbo self destructed in spectacular fashion! Lost 5 strokes in the final three holes. He was looking good for a while too. BD played sketchy down the stretch too, which makes me happy. Scottie rallied on the back 9.

Never could really grasp how people find happiness watching other people “fail” seems really weird.

    • Probably since the golfer has to swing the club back and up. The hands have to move back and up. You can feel them go back and up just by turning the shoulders and bending the right arm, because it brings your hands towards your right shoulder.  The difference is if you maintain width or not. Less width means a shorter feeling swing path so the more you need to lift the arms. Being as someone who gets the right arm bend at 110+ degrees, it's 100% a timing issue. I am use to like a 1.5+ second backswing. It probably should be like 1 second at most. Half a second or more will feel like an eternity. I have had swings where I keep my right arm straighter and I am still trying to time the downswing based on the old tempo.  Ideally, for me, it is probably going to be a much quicker and shorter (in duration) backswing, while keeping the right elbow straighter. Which also means more hinging to get swing length without over swinging.

    • I'm currently recuperating from surgery, so no golf, but have been thinking about this quite a bit. This and the don't overbend the right arm thing. It's hard for me to even pose the position, so I'm not 100% sure, but I feel like it's impossible to have the right humerus along the shirt seam and not overbend your right arm, unless your hands are down near your hips. If the left arm is up at or above the shoulder plane and your right arm is bent less than 90 degrees, then your right humerus has to raise or your hands will get pulled apart. Your left hand can't reach your right hand unless either the right upper arm is up or the right arm is overbent. Is that right? If it is, then focusing on not overbending the right arm would force you to raise the humerus. And actually thinking further on it, if you do overbend your right arm, then you're basically forcing your upper arm down or forcing your left arm to bend. Since (for me at least) bending the left arm too much is not something I think I need to worry about, it means that the bend in the trail arm is really the driving force behind what happens to the right humerus.
    • I managed to knock off a 3, a 13, and a 15 a couple of weeks ago. The 3 was a 185 yard par 3 with a 6 iron to 12 feet. 13 was a 350 yard par 4, which was a 2 iron and a 9 iron to about a foot. 15 was a 560 yard par 5 with a driver in a bunker, 4 iron into the semi, gap wedge to 8 feet and a putt.
