I don't really care about dress codes. I was commenting on drawing new people to the game. They do seem to care. Many people don't like buying new clothes to essentially go for a walk.

I can wear jeans to church, but not to the golf course. Something seems wrong with that.

Beggars can't be choosers.

And if you go to a church with a dress code, you're going to the wrong church.

They'll take anyone in a church.

Golf courses are a service you pay for.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

When my pro does group lessons for the.kiddies they are all dressed as smart as can be,..they love it, they love having the feel of being a golfer and looking smart like the adults

I've been to some churches where you can't wear jeans or it's "highly discouraged". Some restaurants and clubs won't let you in wearing jeans either.  Dress codes aside, jeans imo are not a great fabric to wear for golfing in the heat of the summer anyway so I'm not sure why people are so worked up that some country clubs won't let you wear them.

That's what I don't get either. I put the jeans away nearly two months ago. Even regular or loose fitting jeans are thick and don't breathe, I don't see why anyone would want to spend much time outside in the summer wearing them. Khakis are much more comfortable, especially with the breakable polyester ones they have now.

I like dress nicely but don't care one bit what other people wear [quote name="NM Golf" url="/t/15300/dress-codes-good-or-bad-for-the-game/648#post_717011"]Jeez when I started this thread 5 years ago I had no idea what it would grow into! It seems to have a life of its own popping up from time to time to be debated on again and again by a different set of people. Anywho, I stand by my original post even more adamantly than I did when I posted it back in '08. Call me elitist, call me whatever you want but it drives me bonkers when I show up on the first tee to play golf with some jackass wearing a Micheal Jordan jersey and sweat pants.  While I do not get overly worked up about jeans or cargo shorts, I certainly would not be caught dead playing golf in them at any decent golf course. And that whole thing about no connection between etiquette and dress on the golf course, I say you're wrong. There is most certainly a connection. I work at a muni that has no dress code. Fortunately, we don't have too many problems, but when we do it is always someone dressed like an idiot. I have worked at this course for 7 years and I have never had an issue with someone that came dress appropriately. The rare time we do have to remove someone, they are always dressed more like a street thug than a golfer. It comes down to respect. People who respect the golf course replace divots, rake sand traps, fix ball marks, etc. Respect begins with not showing up at the course wearing the same clothes you wore to do yard work in. This is a hard one because there are really two sides to the story....When I started playing golf I didn't know anybody who played, what to wear, what I was supposed to do.  Had I been told there was a dress code when I got there, I likely would have been so embarrassed I wouldn't have gone back....(bad for the game) or thought to myself..."golf is a bunch of stuffy, better than thou, idiots that I don't want to be associated with"  However, now I play "nice" courses with dress codes (nothing crazy) more than others and when I go there I expect "nice" dress and "nice" people and "nice" play.....and I get it so I think that is good for the game....

In the end, if I'm paying more than say $40 bucks a round, I would expect dress codes and rule enforcement....at $13 for nine holes...I don't expect much nor do I care much...

EDIT:  Holy crap I just saw how old this thread was....OOPS

Dress codes are baloney. I can't stand polo type shirts and almost always play in a decent tee shirt. To see what some folks wear is laughable and worthy of great and continuing ridicule. Nothing more ridiculous than seeing someone show up dressed to the nines and then spend six hours topping, chopping, chubbing and hacking their way around. Every time I see some idiot is plaid shorts and saddle type golf shoes I almost fall out of the cart laughing. These are the same folks who had their mommies tying there shoes until they were in high school.

Few things are more fun than showing up in a Ron Jon tee shirt and cargo pants only to get matched up with someone in slacks and the latest polo from Austad's and then taking their money.

You think dress codes are baloney but yet you seem to care and stereo type people that dress nicely?

I dress very nicely on the golf course, some might even say to the nines. And my mommy taught me how to tie my own shoes well before high school. And my daddy taught me to respect the game by dressing accordingly. Oh and he also taught me how to play golf, much better than you BTW. So bring your ratty Ron Jon tee shirt, and your jeans, and especially your wallet cause there is absolutely nothing I enjoy better than taking money off people like you.

Shocking to see this attitude from you.  I never would have guessed.

The opposite of dress code elitism: the rebel elitist.

These stories hardly every have a real world parallel. Just a dude who thinks he's all that saying whatever he wants.

Nobody rakes sand traps or fixes ball marks at the local muni - no matter how they are dressed, the equipment they play, the car they drive, how well they play.

If it were not for the signs requesting we do so, I would think it was illegal.

That is not just a muni issue. I've worked at different kinds of courses, including daily fee  courses  to nice private clubs, and fixing ball marks and raking bunkers are ignored at all courses. The biggest differenceis that a muni has a lot more rounds, so the number of ball marks is greater.

So you resurrect a year old thread so you can express your snobbiness?  You can stay at your posh club.... I'd rather play with real people anyway.

No. Posts were moved here because they were off topic in the other thread.
