I heard something that you should take what you hit your normal 5 iron and multiply it by 36.

Never heard that one before but that sounds like a good one. I personally feel that 6,300 yards is my limit to a enjoyable day and I hit my 5 iron 170 so that would be 6,120 under that formula. I have no problem with my manhood, I'd rather shoot a good score from shorter tees then get beat up playing from tees that are too long for my game.

I like to keep it under 6500 as well. Much more and it becomes 'work' rather than 'play!'

grow a pair and play the tips

the tees you play dont make half the difference yall are thinking they do. they do make a difference, but you still have to play the same green no matter what tees you play

I realize that the difference between the regular tees and the tips is not so great at the executive course where your junior high school team plays, but there are courses where the difference is significant and those without the length or skill needed to play the tips should not be encouraged or goaded into playing from back there.

I kind of laugh because my course handicaps at my home course are 30 from the whites (6038 yards), 31 from green (6386), 32 blue (6660) and 33 from the tips (7165)

Normally I play the greens but I can tell you I shoot at least 5 strokes better from the whites, about 8 worse from the blue and I havent even had a chance to go when its completely dead to try the tips yet but I would guess that best case scenario would be about a 15 stroke difference instead of the 3 stroke difference listed by handicaps.

In theory I should be playing whites according to our club guidelines but since my play is far from slow, I hover around 100 (98-103) on the greens and my playing partners all play the greens (12-20 handicaps) that is where I play from.

Your course handicap is a measure of the course's slope rating only.

For example, on my home course, if you're an 18.0 index, you get 21 strokes from the white tees (5909 yards). From the black tees (6770 yards), you get... 22 strokes. Slopes are 132 and 139. BUT, to get that 18 index, you would shoot 95 from the blacks (+23) and 90 from the white tees, a difference of five strokes. Why? The course rating is 72.4 and 68.8. Heck, I've seen courses where you get more strokes from forward tees, but you should end up with a lower score because the course rating is still substantially lower. In other words, you may get 31 or 32 from most of your sets of tees, but look at the course rating to see how much they should truly differ for you if you play TO your handicap each time.

I generally play from the middle tees, but I've been playing from the back tees if the guys I'm playing with are. I actually want to experiment a little with playing from the forward tees just to experience the course differently.

Funny thing is I find I score about equally from both sets, it seems that there is something beneficial about playing with good players.

Usually depends on who I am playing with, and they usually decide what tees and I just play. To me it doesn't really matter but a few of my buddies prefer a course around 6500 yards.

Since I typically play the same two courses over and over again AND I usually take the subway, I tend to switch it up. Sometimes I'll leave my driver and woods at home and tee off with hybrids from the fronts. Sometimes the exact opposite. I guess I get kinda bored hitting the same club (especially approach shots) each time on every hole (provided I hit em straight ).

I play from the whites because thats where the scorecard says thats where my handicap should play from .

I have the most fun on courses around 6200 yards

I play anything from 6000 to 6500 so white or gold tees mostly, even though I play a course where the tips are 6100 yards so I play the blues there.

Whites. I like to be able to reach Par-3's relatively confidently. Once I start breaking 90 from whites I'll probably move to the next tier.

my playing partner and I ussually need to make 4 with unknown's. we end up playing the middle T's to keep pace. We try to rotate threw all of them though. I find I play better from the back T's but forward T's can be a great risk reward challenge.

When I'm practicing for a club competition (usually held twice a month), I play from the same tees used for the tournament (Whites - 6650). Obviously, I'm trying to replicate tournament conditions as much as possible. Otherwise I try to play from our tips (Green 7050), as it's a little tougher and I'm trying to reach my goal of 6.0 by the end of 2009.

I usually play the Whites at my course which are 6124 yards, because that's what most of my friend play. I can play the blues, but except for one par 3 it's still not very long (6628 yards) and we don't have anything behind the blues.

When I play with some of my more serious friends then we play the whites and blues interchangeably, playing both the white and blue about the same amount of times. If we are working on hitting shots then we play the white, so we can try hitting those shots with lower irons. But when we have tournaments of what ever, we play the blues.
