Ugh, S&T was doing wonders for my game for about a week and now I'm slicing everything again. What should my shoulder movement be like? Keep in mind I'm trying to get rid of an outside in swing that is slicing the ball.

Weight forward.

Shoulder down. Hands in. Straight arms. Tuck butt. Gonna be one of those things, basically. Without video of your swing, the odds are it's #1 or #3 (or #2, which plays into #3 particularly).

I played a pretty good round yesterday, but was a little disappointed because it could have been better. Many of my approach shots with my irons were pushes with no side movement at all.
As I played on I made one correction on the 18th hole, and consequently did not have any pushes on that hole. I noticed on my downswing/follow through I was allowing my head, shoulders, basically everything to move forward with the hips instead of keeping them over the ball.
Is this something that will actually aid to producing that push? I'm going out today and would like to work on keeping it out of play. If not, what are the common mistakes that will result in a push?

I watched the first two DVD's and then went to the range. It take a little getting used to, but by the end I was hitting it fairly straight. I little more practice and I'm sure the consistency will develop. I definitely see the merit of the pattern.

According to the DVD, the more your weight is centered ahead of the ball, the more push/draw the shot will incur. So yes, an exaggerated forward motion will cause that push. That's one of the shot shaping principles.

I've been watching The Barclays on ESPN3 this morning and the announcers got into a S&T discussion. Basically, the consensus was S&T, while superb for short irons and wedges, hurts PGA players on the tee and in long irons. I realize none of us are on Tour but thought that was interesting. They also mentioned a loss of distance using the swing. I know pretty much nothing about the S&T technically so could that be true?

For me, personally, I incorporate a couple of the ideas: weight forward at address and throughout the swing, left shoulder down. It has helped me tremendously with contact with my irons. I feel confident over every one of my irons now (4-9). I don't use the same concepts on the tee though. Just has never worked for me.

No. None of it's true.

Remember during the AT&T; the announcers were marveling at how far Charlie Wi was hitting the ball? He's not a big dude. Troy Matteson pounds it out there pretty good too. And no, it doesn't hurt PGA players on the tee or in the long irons. They were apparently just making things up (i.e. repeating things they'd heard with no supporting information at all).

I've gained distance on my long irons and woods, and my driver is more accurate than it has ever been.

For what's it's worth, I have found RHTYMN to be the absolute most important aspect of using S & T with my driver. The rythmn has to be there, no rushing etc or else it fails. When I swing with a nice rythmn/tempo, it's golden.

Encountered a new problem tonight during men's night. At what point do you allow the right hip to turn towards the target? I drive my hips forward very effectively and did a much better job of keeping my head back with the ball tonight. I just couldn't get the turn of the right hip towards the target right. I've never had a problem with it before and tonight I just lost it, I could not do it.

You're scratch? Please adjust your handicap if not.

It's 30 to 45 degrees closed at P4, it's square to slightly open at impact, and it's 70 or 90 degrees open at the finish. It turns from -30 to -70 at a minimum continuously throughout the downswing, but more of that comes after P6 than before P6 because more of the turning comes as the left knee straightens.

I find that with the high draw that S&T creates, you gain more distance with the driver. When I strike it correctly, I carry more distance.

I've adopted the weight forward, shoulders down and deep hands and have been hitting the ball better - a little more distance and more accuracy and consistency, but my misses are pull hooks (fat?) and big pushes and less often, a thin shot because I'm afraid to extend the arms.

What is weird about the new feeling is that it feels so different that even if I hit a good shot, it feels, "off", but I'll chalk that up to getting used to a different motion.

Some of my divots are 2, 3 inches in front of the ball. I've rarely done that before and am making less of a divot than my old upright swing.

Maybe next year, I'll experiment with the remaining moves, mainly the butt tuck and back leg straighten. I'm not sure why the follow through is abbreviated. I'll have to reread that part in the book.

I was thinking. Lets assume SnT is a more effective way of teaching the swing to a large percentage of the masses and Woods picks up aspects and wins majors and SnT gets widespread acceptance, could it be possible that we might witness an unprecedented broad improvement of skill level in amateur golfers?

I think so. As a true amateur, I can tell you even just having a relatively simple, complete swing to work on helps with consistency. It's a lot easier to learn than trying to accumulate a bunch of tips and put them together yourself.

Questions:
1. Given the push forward aspect of this swing, do those of you who are implementing it feel like you are expending more effort than you were with your previous swings, the same effort, less effort?

2. Is a certain posture part of this method? Right now I squat quite a bit at address and think I should be taller.

3. My current swing is ott and my ball position, for irons, is pretty much in the center of my stance. In addition to moving the ball further forward with the SnT method, should I also think about moving closer to the ball?

I had problems hitting behind the ball until I started to use the stack and tilt swing a month ago. Now I don't hit behind the ball anymore. This morning I hit 10 balls on a chalkline. 10 nice divots.

That's a good point. What is the purpose of the conventional S&T follow through?

The braking principle. Hitting fast and stopping fast allows you to have more power and speed at the golf ball. Same idea as those used in other sports, but principally the martial arts.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
