I always play with my father in law, and the other day he invited one of his friends from work. So this guy in the parking lot he says "let's make it interesting, we'll play a dollar a hole?" I said OK that's fine, and my father in law agreed. The course was long so I was using Nike PD long balls, I seem to hit them the farthest. Only problem is I can't get a feel for them while putting or chipping so I am lucky to get away with a two putt in most cases. Around the 7th hole and my second 3 putt, I started bitching that I don't like these balls on the greens. I know I know, it's not the ball it's me, but it made me feel better :D

Well I noticed something about that same time. The new guy had hit his drive into a wet area, yet his ball on the green looked brand new. Not a spec of dirt or grass on it. Hmm, that's weird I thought. Sure as hell next hole I paid attention after he marked his ball, he was swapping out with a brand new pro V1 on the greens. I thought that was shady as hell.

Obviously, not knowing every rule and deliberately cheating are two different things. But recognizing that you don't know all the rules, and then still choosing not to learn them before hitting the course again, can be the same thing as choosing not to follow them on purpose. I just took an online test at

Hmm I only got 15 of 18. I obviously don't know all the rules by heart.

I would've called him on it in an instant if I was playing for any amount of money!!

We have about six guys that play together and one guy will pad his score every round by about 5 strokes. We don't care because we are used to it. The only time it bothers me is when he pads his score and goes back and tells people that be beat my a$$.

Haha he really goes and says he whooped you after that? I see people cheat but they never act like they rock because they know we would call them out lol

I was playing nine today, and the guy I paired with was cheating alot. Not taking his OB penalties, pulling the ball up out of the rough onto the fairway, just stupid stuff, and recording bogus scores. A 7 down to a 4? Come on now..

Personally I really don't care if ppl cheat or not....as long as its not a tournament or a money game. If its a money game or serious tournament I'll be on them like white on rice.

I'm easy about it too. I only care about my score.

With newbies to the game I let them have mulligans, gimmes and a couple kicks out of the rough. Let them enjoy the game first and worry about the score later.

I need to work on this I guess. I played with my buddy this weekend and after watching him shave a stroke off his score for 3 hole in a row, I had to call him on it. He then attempted to shave a stroke on the next 2 holes but I called him on those as well. He got kinda upset and didn't speak to me for a couple holes. Not only did it make for an uncomfotable back nine but it messed with my head and I had a hard time focusing. I just need to not worry about it and play my own game.

my get up and go musta got up and went..

It bugs me when I go out with three of my friends and we agree to play stroke play. Winner Gets 15$ or free drinks after. So on the first hole my 3 friends and gaff the Tee shot OB or into a hazard. I put one straight I shoot a bogey and they all at least double. So all 3 decide that hole is a "wash" and dont count it.

Next hole same thing happens I shoot a par and they all shoot at least a double, everyone(except me of course) agrees to not count there drops after the Tee shot and give each other all 5's. So now I should be up by 3 strokes on everyone at least, instead its only one, because the rules always change to benefit the majority in the foursome lol.

Sounds like congress...

"My ball is on top of a rock in the hazard, do I get some sort of relief?"

No Congress would still be on the first green stalling the decision till dark so they can come back and argue about it again tomorrow.

sometimes my buddy and I will play "ball lost is penalty enough" lol. But other than that we pretty much play by the rules. Balls are the most expensive part of the game besides greens fees, I don't make a lot of money, lol. So losing a ball to me... is penalty enough, lol. Sometimes we play pretty strictly by the rules, although I don't have every rule memorized. I play golf to get out and enjoy the game, if I don't know what the rule is when I run into a certain situation and drop incorrectly or take 1 stroke rather than 2 as the rules say I'm not going to get bent out of shape about it or lose sleep over it. If I was capable of shooting consistent 70's or 80's, I would play by the rules to a T

When we go golfing I don't really like to cheat. I'd prefer to see my Bogey's - Triple Bogey's; rather than seeing cheated scores. I am told it's okay to kick it away from the tree if it lands right next to it. But honestly, what do you learn from that? Nothing.

I was golfing with a buddy a few days ago. The ball landed and rolled right next to a tree, me being lefty I couldn't hit it. He said don't sweat it, go ahead and drop on the FW. I said nah, went in his bag, grabbed a 9i and right hand chunked it into the woods. 50 feet in! I saw no OB stakes, so I went ahead and hit it with a wedge out of the trees. Looking back bad idea on the wedge, but thats a different story. He got a 6, I wound up with an 8. Later he said if I just dropped my ball I woulda won the dollar on that hole. I just looked at him and said, "How will I ever get better if I cheat? If that was a tournament, I would have had to hit it." His response was it wasn't a tournament. That just kills me, it wasn't he was right, however I need to get better. I want to keep getting better, and cheating isn't going to get me there. I don't care about the eight. I still shot a 82. I was happy at the end of the day. I beat him. But he still revisits that even a week later!

I'm not a big fan of those shots by trees that only lefty's can hit! Since I am a righty, it's no fun hitting away from one.

Yeah, I was counting his shots on number 9. He shot a 8, he recorded a 5. I mean, I didnt bring it up, it was just a friendly game. But if you arent palying for money, then why would you cheat? You are just cheating yourself..

I was playing with some guys the other day and I hit into a bunker, about six inches from the lip. Not a good lie at all, horrible to be honest. The one guy said to me,"I would just move that back." To which I said, "I've got to learn how to how to hit these shots."

If you are always moving your ball out of tough positions and improving your lie how can you get better, and what reason do you have to improve your game since you are going to put it into a better position anyway?

Sorry to say, you may as well have taken an illegal drop unless you gave yourself the two-stroke penalty for borrowing a club from other than your partner... If you want to play right-handed, you've got to carry your own club or learn to hit an upside-down lefty club.

I don't much care how a person plays as long as there's no $$ involved. Their only cheating themselves if they play slop golf any other time.

    • Well, I just got back from 7 days straight of golf in Las Vegas.  I've played all three courses at Paiute Golf Resort. Normally I say that the Wolf course is my favorite, but I do really like Snow Mountain as well. I'll say this, all three courses are really great there. You can't go wrong by playing Paiute.  Then I played a tournament at Bear's Best. Been playing that tournament for like 15-16 years now. We've only been at Bear's Best for the last 10, before that we were at Prime Valley. It was a great tournament. For some reason my head fell off during my Saturday round to take me totally out of contention. I also hit a piss-poor tee shot on the 4th hole of the horserace to take my partner and I out of that.  I hit some really great shots during the tournament. But you don't win tournaments by hitting great shots. You win tournaments by making low scores. Which I simply wasn't able to do.  It was great, and now only 357 more days until next year's tournament.
    • One that comes to mind ... #2 Jasper Hills GC, par 3 Naturally this one was to save par.  Hit two awful shots to find myself on the very front of this fairly large size green. The hole was in the back, left corner with a decent amount of right to left break. I'd only be guessing what the actual distance was, but it was easily over 50 feet. There was so much bend on the back end of the putt that it just seemed really unlikely until the last few seconds when it broke back to the hole, hit the stick dead center and dropped.
