Do you think you can beat a same handicapper as you?

I'm not asking whether you are a sandbagger or not. I'm curious to know how comfortable you are playing with your handicap.

If medal play vs match play matters, please specify.

To be honest, probably not. I've never had a competetive drive really, in anything. Beating people is not what motivates me to do well. My hcp is 1 but I bet my competition hcp (if I had one) would be 3 or 4. Trying to be completely serious for an entire round is usually not very fun for me. I like to jest and have a relaxed good time, that's when I perform best. In high school when I was at my best I was basically scratch and could shoot 72 all week long with my friends but then shoot 80 during tournaments. Something I have to work on if I ever want to compete again.

Although not at your level of play, that's what I'm working on this summer - a game that can stand up under pressure. I'll be entering a couple men's opens in August if I can swing it with "the boss". As long as their index is valid, I feel pretty confident I could go toe to toe with another 6-7 capper. I might get my a$$ handed to me, but I'd congratulate him and move on.

Metal play: I tend to be rather erratic, so metal play would be iffy. Given 20 rounds for HDCP purposes, the rounds of the bottom 10 can be up to 10 strokes above the top 10. I could win easily or get clobbered, depending on if I had a round or a round.

Match play: I would tend to have a better chance. Last time I played, I was +9 on the back nine with four pars and two triple bogies. You do the math.

I have not always been a good player, but I have always had the competitive drive. I love the feeling of being one down with three to play and fighting like hell to win the match. The only thing better is being one up on the last hole and it being a hard hole. I am not scared of needing to make the 10 footer to tie or win the match.

That being said, I don't play any different if I am 1 down or 1 up. I know my game and don't try to do things that are too risky. I learned years ago that playing the odds are the best way to shoot your best scores. Another thing is that I don't play different if the bet is $10 or $500. All I can do is the best I can do. How much money is on the line is not relevant to how hard I play... I always play as hard as I can..... and I win or lose accordingly... and I don't bitch about it.

My swing thoughts:

- Negative thinking hurts more than negative swinging.
- I let my swing balance me.
- Full extension back and through to the target. - I swing under not around my body. - My club must not twist in my swing. - Keep a soft left knee

I do a lot of competitive shooting (successfully) and have found competitive golf to have the same butterflies and the need to step up a notch when the shorts tighten, so yes, I can (and have).

I played a 9 HI last weekend. 2 rounds. We basically filp flopped scores. I shot 83 the first day and 90 the next (new course)...he shot 90 or 91 the first day, and 81 the next. Really its you vs yourself though......

I'd be more confident playing at match play. My game is inconsistent, and I will make 4 or 5 pars in a row, then get on a string where I make a couple of doubles and a triple in a 4 or 5 hole stretch before get back on track again. That bad stretch would kill me in stroke play, and while it wouldn't make me happy in a match, it's at least not quite as much of a disaster.

I've found that there are a lot of ways to play to my handicap, and for me, match play seems to be the most successful form of competition. I'll let you know... I've got a match tomorrow morning and I have to give him 11 strokes. We'll see if my theory holds up.

At my level, my handicap, it really is semantics... The term Any Given SUnday comes to mind... I played with 3 other scratch + golfers today and it really was a day, we kind of all struggled. Between the 4 of us we were +7 combined which is a bad day. I beat 2 of them and lost to another... But like I said, Any Given Sunday!

Match play, no doubt about it I could win. And I don't say that because I am cocky or anything, I just know because in high school I have beaten even players who would have a better handicap than me. Stroke play, I tend to have a few bad holes that kill me under pressure.

Im with the any given sunday comment. BUT in general I will wipe the floor against another 18.7.

Ive lost 5 points over the last 15 rounds on my HI.
Ive beaten a 5 HI in the last 15 rounds, 2 ten HI's, two 15's, one 18hi, 3 20HI's. I have lost to 2 10HI, 2 weeks ago and one 15hi by 8 strokes, 5 and 3.
Last friday I played with a 15HI beat him by 5. Lost to a 15HI and a 12HI by about 5 strokes and 7 strokes

In my most recent scrambles Ive been paired with a 10 and 2 15's. We used over 20 of my drives an irons and shot 64. Mostly one putts under 12 feet were included in that 64 so close to %40 of my balls were used when it should have been less than %20.

The only other 18HI I play with is injured but prior to injury he would neither best me in stroke or match play.
The most telling experience for me was shooting 93 in a corporate open with no mulligans etc. With my HI I posted 4th place in a 68 golfer field. The course was long with a hard slope/rating.

The problem I have is playing alone and losing focus. Ill got out at 5pm and try to squeeze a round in 2 hours and shoot ok, then Ill blow up a hole and start hacking, probably playing too fast.

I always expect and think I can beat whoever I am playing against, regardless of handicap. Not gross score perhaps, but net or Stableford, no doubt about it.

Sounds like you'd be a good guy to call when the local river starts rising.

Im sure Ill hit the wall soon, Ive learned that if you dont play at least twice a week, you begin to lose the gains. My confession is that I go out as a single every weekend bright and early just to get paired with a low capper group of 3 in the hopes that Ill take it to the next level. I seem to focus more when Im playing with players who are better than me. Focus is the number one cause of high strokes for me.

i always think i will win, i am super competitive and think the same way when i play a 12 handicapper or a +2. if you go into not thinking your going to win you probably wont. i play with guys who are better then i am and it has dropped my index a lot. if i am playing some one i always seem to do better i think its because i slow down and think about every shot instead of just doing the norm.

for some odd reason, i play a couple shots below my handicap when i'm playing with stiff competition. i know that every shot counts so i approach it as such. my best round so far this year was going head up with a buddy who plays on the hooter's tour. birdied my first four holes.

I'm competive and even in a "friendly" round I play to win. So yes I think I would beat my same handicapped counterpart. With that said, "anything" can happen lol
