the Gamer is probably the best ball available for $20/dozen.

Gamer V2 without question is the best ball under $20 that stacks up like a NXT Tour all day long.

They've a reputation as being very hard feeling. Not unwarranted but there are exceptions. The new Gamer V2 is an awesome buy; for what it's worth, I posted a review on it here the other day.

Every ball manufacturer makes a few distance rocks. I've played some Titleists (among others) that were dreadful - on the other end of the spectrum though, are balls like the Pro V1 and so that's what people think of first. Plus there's the hype - "the most trusted ball in golf" - whatever. If I could consistently produce my most trusted swing, I'd use any ball.

Basically just echoing what others have said: Used to be all cheap, durable balls, then they came out with the D2 line which were pretty good overall and the D2 Feel is actually a (the?) leader for it's price range ($1/ball). The Gamer also turned heads and the Gamer v2 is labeled by most as the best ball you can get for $20/dozen. I think it was when they were purchased by Callaway that the transition into quality started, Callaway uses Top Flite to address the cheap(er) ball market.

Outside of the D2 family (the Gamer doesn't use the D2 name but still has "dimple in dimple", so I include it in the D2 family) I haven't played any Top Flites. I'm guessing they still make some durable rock-like balls and some long-hitting less rock-like balls, but the trend will probably be away from that what with Callaway's involvement.

I also like Precept Laddie X if you are on a budget.

Me, too. I don't notice that much difference between balls but the Precept Laddie just feels good . .and is cheap.

I play Top-Flite D2's a lot, too. I don't notice much difference between a Top-Flite D2 and a Titleist DT or Bridgestone E6, etc, etc. As a guy that will play anything I find on the course, I have hit lots of balls. Most newer balls are pretty good.

I shot my personal best round last year with a Top Flight I found; I don't recall the model.

I like all this anti-Top Flite hype.

I found a source for very good condition used Top Flite balls for $20 per 48 balls locally.

After I hit half a ball that had been hit by a lawn mower with a really good contact/swing over a water hazard to 3 feet from the hole on a ~180 yard par three, I learned real quick that my swing and contact is far more important than ball technology. Although, I'm sure that ball had more than average "bite".

Now I just need to get consistent enough to hit every ball that good.......

when i hit a top flite it feels like it breaks my clubhead... it doesnt matter if the gamers are cheap, who buys new ball anyways? i just find balls or buy them reconditioned or however they come...and i have a few hookups. i mostly use nxt tours myself, but if i can find a good deal on something close then ill play them for a while.

It is blatantly obvious that you have not hit the D2's or Gamers.

I buy new balls. Why? Because I want to and don't lose many golf balls.

Those Gamer V2's are amazing balls for the price. Sports Authority was selling them for 18$ a dozen a little while ago and myf riend bought like 4 dozens. I tried out a sleeve and definitely a great ball for the price.

I have played Callaways and Pro V1 for a few years. I did try the Gamer and I like that ball. It doesn't spin as much for me but it's not bad. I like putting the ball which I cannot say for any others besides the Pro V1 and Callaway. If I had to play the Pro v1X or the gamer, I'd pick the gamer. They got it right with this one.

Very durable ball. You can't hurt them,

I don't know about that. I remember I took out one of my Top Flites once and took a shot at it with my 7I. It went about 100 yards, but when I went to pick it up it had a huge chip in it. Though, it's probably because I had that ball for about 3 years.

I believe some Top Flites actually have a no-scuff guarantee. The D2 and XL 5000 series I think.

I don't think this one was a D2 or an XL5000. That's too bad.

i have never seen a d2 or gamer in real life except i saw the package for them once at wal mart...and why would i use them if i could get nxt tours, srixons, or bridgestones? i just cant get myself to pay 1.00/ ball. they wear out after a couple rounds anyways, unless its a pro v one that only lasts one round.

anyone ever try Nitro Blaststers? they gave them away in a goody bag for a scramble i played in last month and i kinda liked them...they werent like incredibly hard or anything.

Interesting. I think old school Top Flites were more likely to put a scuff on your club - they weren't Spalding worst ball by a long shot though. Those were probably Molitors or Star Flites.

    • 39/39/78 for an 8.7 differential. Ball striking was good. Putting and chipping was off just enough to prevent a very good score.
    • Worst thing on Sunday was that NBC and Peacock wouldn't let me FF through the commercials on my DVR recording. Very boring when a guy has a huge lead on the final round and everyone else is playing for 2nd place. At least it was USA 1-2-3 in the end.
    • First day of a trip to Bandon Dunes. We played Sheep Ranch today. A Coore/Crenshaw designed course. A par 34 on the front and 38 on the back. With 8 holes with either a green, tee box, or the hole runs along the edge of the bluffs at the pacific. It has amazing vistas. With wide fairways and intermixed gorse bushes. The defense of the course are its large, undulated greens and the daily winds from the north. Many times you need to take 3-4 clubs more, if you even barely cross the wind, your ball can be taken offline or come up half to a full club short. A fantastic layout.    here are some photos.
    • At Sheep’s Ranch, Bandon Dunes. Shot an 84. That wind was nasty going from like hole 7 forward. It was like a 3-4 club wind if in the face. Greens are tricky with the natural grass.
    • Yes. The full swing is not that different, and speed is important with all of them. You don't see Tour players hitting their driver 310 and then hitting their 7I 160. Of course, but they're nothing like those for the full swing.
