I am just kidding about the title, but I have officially switched from carrying to a three wheeled push-cart and cart bag....and I am a month away from being 30. I had to make the change because of re-occurring back pain from carrying my bag and swinging for 18 holes. I have been using a cart for a while, but in the last two weeks I have purchased a clic-gear cart and a cart bag. I was originally somewhat saddened by this change, but I have come to my senses and realized it's not only good for my golf game but my body as well.

Has anyone else made the change at a young age and not felt shame?

I'm only 20 and when I don't feel like walking I get a cart. I just got a stand bag with a double strap so that will make it a lot easier to walk though. I say do whatever you are comfortable doing, you are the one paying to go golfing no reason to feel shame playing it how you want to.

I am 26 and use a pull cart. I messed up my back in high school and I have no desire to make it worse.

I used to use a pull cart before I was old enough to get a cart when I went by myself. Then I got one of those stand bags with a nice comfy dual strap. I can't believe most caddy's on tour are still carrying bags over 1 shoulder. Hello, get with the times, dual straps are the way to go. But I mix up how I play quite a bit. I usually ride when I go with friends, walk and carry when I'm by myself. So I'm not carrying EVERY round I play, saves my body and energy. Plus there are some courses in my area that I play that are literally impossible to walk they are so hilly.

Callaway XR 9.5 + 1, Taylormade R15 3 Wood, Burner 3 Rescue, Callaway XHot 5H, Warbird 4H, Nike Vapor Fly 6-AW Irons, Titleist Vokey 54, 60 Wedges, Taylormade Rossa Fontana Putter, Srixon Z-Star Tour Yellow.

Best Score 2017:  82 (Traditions at the Glen, Par 70)

Favorite Course - Conklin Players Club (Par 72) - Best Score 86

I don't think the spine is built for that kind of long term exertion(specialists can correct me if i'm wrong). I mean, how many guys carry their bags on the PGA tour? No point in torturing ourselves in the name of chest thumping ego.

I carried for years, but started to realize my shoulder & neck would pretty much seize up & cause me misery. I'm using my old 2 wheeler right now. Going to wait for the demo sale or boxing day to pick up a sweet 3 wheeler & new 14 slot bag.

Good for you - to each his own. I walk, use a gas cart, and have a push/pull cart - each week all three formats could be in play, and I like to mix them up when I can. The push/pull cart approach keeps you moving without all the lugging and related BS. I prefer to carry on par three and shorter courses. I use the gas cart when the course requires it (early weekend mornings).

this. FTMFW. your not becoming an old man, youre becoming smarter. youll play better with the push cart as opposed to carrying.

I'm 37, not exactly young, but no where near being an old man!! lol

I've carried for the past year and a half and just recently bought a clic gear push cart. I refuse to ride, but carrying was a detriment to my game in that the last 4-5 holes on those hot summer days I was out of gas. One of the best golf purchases I've made since getting serious about the game and I will never carry again.

I was carrying up until last fall when we did a golf trip to Hawaii. We decided to get push carts since we were doing a lot of activities that week and didn't want to wear out (I hate using carts, try to avoid it). Needless to say, it was fantastic. I went ahead and bought a Clicgear at beginning of this year - and I've converted a couple of my friends to using push carts also. I turned 30 this year but I don't view it as a age thing. I'll be promoting it to my son when he's old enough to start playing, if nothing else to save his back.

heres the honest to god truth for me (no disrespect to anyonw who carry's)
i TRIED AND TRIED to get a cart and cart bag this year....but i just couldnt do it

ill be 30 this year too and i HAVE to carry (really dont like to cart either)
i like to take my time, think about the shot ahead but still keep a quick pace
a cart messes this all up for me
it gets heavy on a hot day, and i get tired, but i really think i play better when im in my regular walking routine
i feel rushed otherwise (push cart or power cart)

i hope my body will let me carry until im 70

I have seriously considered some sort of product to get the clubs off my back. I am 32 first year back from a 7 year break. I have NEVER had a problem with my back until this year. I have had to have a mri and found out I have 2 pinched nerves and have had to get 2 shots in my back. From having a week back I have also had a couple of non displaced fractured ribs. I am not saying it was carrying the clubs for 3 rounds a week but I don't think it has not helped any. I am in construction and carry around a tool belt that weigh's around 20 lbs for 8-10 hours a day but there is something about carrying the weight up high on your shoulders that can put a hurt on you.

I'm 26 and I have a pull cart. I golf everyday so my bag is completely busted and can no longer stand by itself and plus with that much golf I dont want to carry all the time. But yea once in a while I"ll ask a beer girl if the pull cart makes me a dork and they say yes it sure does. :(

Yea, I feel the same way. I'm 46 years and been carrying since I started playing 35 years ago. I lift weights and run 3 days a week apiece, so I couldn't in good conscience not carry my bag; it's additional exercise on the one day I can't. I've never had a single physical problem related to carrying. I hate it when people intimate it's an ego thing for those who carry. I say no, it's your ego that's worried about how you will be perceived with a push cart. Personally I couldn't care less, just don't see the need to put down those who still carry with comments like "I'm plenty fit, I just got smart". Just because you're trying to convince yourself you did the right thing doesn't mean you have to imply those who don't see it that way are somehow less intelligent or ego-driven.

I switched to a push cart at age 25. It also allows me to carry lots of water - as much as 100 oz on some days!

I did just switch to a full-brimmed hat also.

I got a clicgear cart close to when I first started playing around 25 years of age. I love mine. And if people only carry out of pride thats just dumb.

I am 26 with no back problems pretty healthy and push the clicgear. I just like the convenience of grabbing my clubs while i am walking up to a shot, cup holder for my x-large coffe, scorecard holder and a gallon of gatorade in the bag.

    • Hit my tee shot just into the penalty area and barely found it. Swung hard just in case I hit it. It was slightly downhill with a heavy tailwind. I don't actually hit my 9i 170 yards.
    • Right. The difference between being 120 out and 70 out for me (this is the important part) is negligible and not worth putting other risks into play off the tee.   Ok the argument against driver is that my shot cone is comically large. It puts every possible outcome into play. You can't see the green from the tee so there's a good chance I'd have to wait for it to clear which would slow down play. That's the third tee right in the middle of the firing range there. I really don't want to wait just to hit a terrible shot and I especially don't want to injure somebody. Yea I have no problem playing out of the rough short of the bunker if I'm just going to lay up short of the bunker, but I absolutely need to avoid flaring it right into the penalty area if I'm going to be laying up in the first place. As a general strategy I understand where you're coming from. But since we're specifically talking about me (this is a shot I'm going to have to hit on Saturday), I think the cost is fairly marginal. I hit the ball 8' closer on average from 50-100 than I do from 100-150 from the fairway and rough and the green success % difference is 4%. Bunker might as well be a penalty drop. Based on the data,  Here's my SG:A data compared to a 10: I honestly don't know how to use SG for decision making. That's why I was mostly looking at proximity to hole and green success rate for comparison. I mostly use SG as a way to track my progress. All good. Like I said, I appreciate the discussion. It makes me think. If I didn't want to see alternative/opposing viewpoints to my own I just wouldn't post anything. You should post it! In your own swing thread, of course. It's been a fun exercise.
    • Played my first 2024 round at Pierce Lake. Boomed my first drive down #10 fairway, then slowly slipped into mediocrity. 83 (69.6/131). The high point was going 2 of 4 on sand saves. My sand game is pretty marginal but today I must have discovered the secret for a couple hours.
    • day 34. Technique practice. Became too quick and outcome oriented. need to slow down and work on technique again.
    • Day 534, April 18, 2024 Practice before lessons today. Priority piece. No sim this time. 🙂
