I would feel too much liek I had unfinished business if I walked away from a bucket... I do step away briefly to collect my thoughts, and other times simply switch to something else like punching wedges to shake whatever my brain is auto-correcting..

Nothing worse than over-thinking on the range though.. It's such a helpless feeling!

I've walked away when I felt I had the problem I was addressing resolved. The only time I hit a bucket is for that reason. Or to watch some gorgeous babe hitting in front of me in a short skirt....

Yes - for emergency reasons other than golf, to catch a tee time or to get an impromptu tee time.

Last weekend I drove 30 minutes to hit off grass. Bought a large bucket of 120 balls. After about 30 I was hitting them sooooooo good I seriously just wanted to walk away. I felt a hitch would develop at any moment. I hung in there and though I had a couple of slightly rough patches I hit them great. But I did finish the last 30 or so with pitch shots at a barrel laying about 40 yards away. That was fun. Heck even if you chip them to something 10 or 15 yards away don't give up on the bucket.

I've never walked away from a bucket since if everything goes haywire, I just start hitting pitch shots which usually make me feel better.

I was going to say exactly this. Sometimes the shorter swings help get out of the funk, too.

Last weekend I drove 30 minutes to hit off grass.

Half an hour? HA!

1.5 hour public transportation to the parents. 1 hour drive from parents to grass range. OK, visiting the parents kind of fudges the numbers, but that is total travel time and total travel direction is a beeline to the grass range. Don't be a die hard golfer in NYC.

I used to get so crazy with frustration that I'd want to walk away soo badly. One time I left like 4 or 5 balls. Another time I had like 10 balls left or so and in a blind rage I just grabbed my club and beat the Sh#$ out of them till they were all gone in like 10 seconds, no pre shot routine no adress to the ball no flight . I felt like I was breathing fire on the way to my car. I don't get that worked up anymore as i can actually hit the ball with good contact most times.

Many times.

Some days it's just not there. & definitely not worth ingraining something seriously negative into your swing.

On a regular basis i only hit what i feel i need to hit. The number of balls in the bucket is irrelevant.

I frequently work evening shift, and sometimes go to an upscale golf course range in the mornings. Lots of execs will show up to play, and often leave a dozen range balls behind after warm-up.

Once I hit my bucket, I'll collect up the leftovers and often have more than a large bucket. After about 100 full shots, I start to get a little tired, and will leave the rest.

I hate to do this, because these are softer, sem-spin range balls - not the rocks most places have.

Focus, connect and follow through!

I don't think so. I pay for the season so I could. I do give myself a time out on the nearby bench to reqroup occasionally, or head to the practice green for a bit and then return to finish. If you suddenly fall apart I figure its mental or relaxation related. Grinding on technique at that point is counter productive so a break or quitting for the day makes sense to me.

I don't know about grinding always being unproductive. Some days I've hit hundreds of bad shots before starting to hit some good ones, and those are usually the days I really learn something about my swing.

I had a guy offer me half a bucket yesterday. He was there before I got there. My back was to him, so I couldn't see what he was doing, but could hear his club hitting the mat first, and then watch his ball trickle past me, I was about 20 feet to his left. I started hitting my 7i which I can hit pretty well and I could hear him getting more angry with each swing I made and he made. Finally he walks over and tells me "there's something wrong with these balls" and I could have them if I wanted. I thought he was joking, and smiled trying to think up a funny retort, but realized he wasn't joking. He really thought the balls were the reason he was hitting bad shots.
